Choosing strategies
Finally, for this part, I will say you have to choose strategies.
Still reasons. Why should we choose strategies? Strategy here means
策略或者方法。
Now you see we are different. We have different learning styles. We are at different proficiency levels. People might ask me what do you mean by saying we have different learning styles. You know, some people prefer to rely on their eyes to get the new information. Some people prefer to rely on their ears to receive the information. Some people like to write something while saying something aloud, but other people hate them. They would like to read something silently.
And my learning style is like that as a student, I always like to sit in the front row to watch the teacher's facial expression_rs and gestures. Also I would like to watch what has been written down on the blackboard. So I rely a lot on my eyes.
Now if I sit at the back, just I'm worrying about what I've heard. It seems to me my ears are not so reliable. My eyes are better than my ears. So this is my learning style.
I'm not sure what is your learning style. So you may think what is your learning style. So different people might prefer to learn things in different ways. So you have to choose the most suitable way for yourself. Don't follow others, because everyone is unique here. Everyone has his or her own style. So you have to examine yourself to find out your own style.
Now, I will tell you later you have this style, then you use this kind of strategy. Other people can not copy what you have done. Ok?
And
different proficiency levels. Now you see, we are
sitting here and we are not at the same level. Some people move
faster to the higher level. Some people, because they start later,
so their level is lower. If you are at different levels,
then you learn in different ways. You can not learn in the
same way. So that's why we need to choose
strategies.
Vocabulary learning strategies
Now basically speaking, for learning vocabulary, we have to go
through three phases or three stages.
要经历三个阶段。
First, you
have to memorize, memorize its form, memorize its meaning and
memorize its use. This is the first phase. We try to get things in
and try to remember them.
And then the
second phase: you have to use what you have learned in speaking, or
listening or reading or writing. You have to use them. Here using
is sort of kind of practice. Practice.
Then finally
you have to recycle these words. That means you have to see these
words again and again in different contexts. If you have no chance
to see them again, you will quickly forget them. Right? So these
three phases form a whole cycle, form a whole
cycle.
All these
strategies, it might not be surprising to you. It might not be
surprising to you, because some of them have practised them. And I
just put them together, try to tell you some strategies are only
useful for some people, not all of them.
Memorizing
Now
first say the words you are
learning. Now if you say the words aloud. Now what's
the advantage of using this strategy? What is the advantage when
you say the word aloud?
First, you practice your pronunciation. Right? And then also your pronunciation will be another kind of input. So your memory will have auditory image in your mind. What does it mean? I mean 你要是说一个词的话,说出来以后你这个嘴巴肌肉得到练习,使你的这个发音正确。同时那个声音,你发出来的声音又重新变成一种新的输入储存在脑子里面。
This auditory image is very important for listening. Your pronunciation is important for speaking. So say the word aloud is useful, especially for beginners, especially for beginners.
And then, second suggestion or second strategy is record the words or phrases you are learning on tape and play them to yourself whenever you have time.
Now it's easier to get these thing done. Now I know some of you have tape recorder. They do not listen to their own speaking, but listen to experts speaking. Right? So you might say a text, which is pronounced or read aloud by a native speaker. You listen to it. Your try to imitate their pronunciation and intonation. That's good.
But here you record your own voice on the tape. You listen to it. Then you can compare your voice with native speakers'. Then you may see that whether yours is right or wrong. And also you can take the tape recorder with you. Whenever you got time, you can listen to it. It's very convenient.
No. 3: Write the words you are learning on pieces of paper or stick the notes and put them around your room. So you can find these words whenever you walk within the room. So you can see these words as many times as you can. So its easier for you to remember them.
It'll remind you. Right? And then put the words into sentences. That's, I think, very common practice. Many students or teachers will do that.
And finally
use your knowledge of the parts of
words. Now this item, I will talk about it later
when we talk about stage 2 words. So I won't elaborate this
point.
Using
Several ways for you to use
words.
First, you can create sentences of your own. I've mentioned that before. And you can write a story that includes all the words you have learned, all the words you have learned. Just make up a story. Try to use all the words you have learned. And then learn words for a certain topic or situation. Then write about the topic using vocabulary you've learned or have a discussion or conversation with your partner.
So suppose you
have learned a group of words about the environment. So then you
try to write a composition on this topic. So you can use all these
words within this composition. You must use them. If you do not use
them, you will quickly forget them. So I just give you different
ways to use them.
Recycling
This is also interesting.
I do it very often. So try to follow
a news story that is printed or broadcast every day for several
weeks.
For example, the war between Israel and Palestine. If you follow this news for several weeks, and then I'm sure you can learn all these words easily. Just follow the same topic, the same news story.
Still I give you, you can focus on one type of news story.
For example, some boys like to read news on sports. If you are interested in football game, and may you try to focus on this area, try to read news story about this type of game many many times. And these words will recur frequently. So it's easier for you to see these words again.
And you can watch movies or read books on particular topics.
For example, travel or business. So watch several movies on the same topic or several books on a particular topic. Then you can learn these words quickly.
Finally, you can read several books by the same author. You see the same author would like to use similar words. In that way, the words are used more frequently by other author. So in that way, you can remember them. Ok. This is the recycling.
