Information about word frequencies is another important
feature.
Since computers entered the field of lexicography词典学, and with
the creation of large English corpora, corpus, pl. corpora,
lexicographers now know a great deal about word frequency. That's
the job computers are best at.
Find out about the frequency of a word. As this information is very valuable to teachers and students of English, so these lexicographers would like to share it with dictionary users.
So three of the learner's dictionaries provide frequency information about headwords. Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English marks the first 3,000 most common English words, used in speech and er..and er..writing in the form of:
S1, the first 1000 most common words used
in speech;
S2, the second 1000
most common words used in speech, and so on;
W1 means the first
3000--the first1000 English words used in written
English.
And in
McMillan English
Dictionary they use a different code. It's also a
three-frequency
bands. It has three-frequency
bands,
So we have 3,000, 7,000 and 14,000, three
levels. What do the three levels represent and what
are the three stages? What do the three stages mean for
us?
With 3,000 most commonly used words, we can talk about a lot of things on everyday topics. Since a whole dictionary can be defined within a vocabulary limit of 2,000 to 3,000 words. In theory, we can describe whatever we think directly or indirectly by using these 3,000 most common words. That's the importance of the first 3,000 English words. And also with 3,000 English words you can read simplified English readers, simplified stories. You are at the beginners' stage actually.
Now, with 7,000 words, what can you do? If you have learned 7000 words, then you can more or less easily read natural English articles or newspapers with the help of dictionaries. Although 3000 .. the 3,000 most common words represent, account for 80% of all English words, in speech and writing. But if you just have 3,000 words, you will encounter too many new words. With 7,000 words, you are more comfortable. So today, college students are required to master about 4,500 words to 5,000 words. These are not enough. If you want to have a working knowledge of English, you need about 7,000 words.
Then if you
have learned 14,000 words,
what does that mean? It means you have reached about the same level
of a good English-major

this many words, you can read English
newspapers without looking up a dictionary. And you can
understand roughly what it says. Of course if you want to
understand 100%, you have to consult dictionaries. But just like we
read our Chinese newspapers or books, sometimes we encounter words
that we don't know how to pronounce and we don't know the meaning.
But we don't bother. As long as we can know what the writer.. what
the author says, then it's ok. So with 14,000 words, you can
achieve about the same effect.
Normally, it is believed that native
English speakers have a vocabulary about 20,000 words, an educated native English
speaker. From 14,000 to 20,000, there is still a big gap. But you
will be more comfortable with 14,000 words.
