Hello Yang,

My heart goes out to all who are impacted by this devastating tragedy.  Given the magnitude of the destruction and loss, I am not sure that any advice I could offer is appropriate.  I do have a little experience in researching community-wide tragedy, though not of the scale in China. I conducted an OH study in the aftermath of the Columbine shootings, which was very different from an earthquake, but the human mind responds to tragedy in many of the same ways.

I have attached a copy of a presentation that I gave to the IOHA Conference in 2006 on what I had learned about the impact of trauma that needs to be addressed in undertaking an oral history project.  This is not a fully developed paper, but it does introduce some of the major concepts for your friends to be aware of.

One thing of particular note: As interviewers set out to document the disaster, it is critical that they be prepared and understand the nature of the trauma response.  I can provide more background that might be helpful, but at the risk of your being overwhelmed by others from the list-serv who want to help, I will not send more unless you write to let me know that you are interested.

With highest regards,

Carolyn

Dear Xiangyin Yang 6/3/2008

The resources at the Center for History and New Media, George Mason University, website http://echo.gmu.edu/ might be helpful, especially the 9/11 Digital Archive (see below). Since China produces excellent digital voice recorders, ask the manufacturers for an emergency donation of recorders, hand them out with relief supplies, and ask that people just talk into them until the batteries run out and then send them back to your colleagues. Having an answering machine for cell-phone messages/texts would be another way. I feel sure that your oral history project can teach the whole world how to deal with a staggering disaster. My thoughts are with you and your country. Karen Reeds

You might find it helpful to look at what happened after the 1988 Armenian earthquake. There was quite a lot of monitoring afterwards by external NGOs which resulted in publications. I visited the area over ten years later and did a small amount of interviewing. Sichuan and the Gyumri earthquakes are very similar. In both cases children numbered greatly amongst the victims as the earthquakes happened during school hours. Similar questions were asked too about the standard and quality of the newer buildings that seemed to collapse easily.

dear Yang Xiangyin,

to all of the people who lived this disaster my deepest feelings of solidarity... i have worked in the earthquake area in the marmara region (in Turkey) after the 1999 earthquake and would say that the trauma work on the disaster is very important. the oral history part only became a part of our work in the long term. we worked with a group of people and worked on the life of the people after the earthquake. for years we did interviews with the same group of people to on the same subjects / questions.if you are interested i can respond to you off-list.we had a panel in the crossroads-istanbul conference 2 years ago.

in solidarity

There was at least one oral history project done in the immediate aftermath of the 1985 Mexico City earthquake, with a follow-up project a year later. There were articles about these efforts in The Oral History Review :

Elena Poniatowska, "The Earthquake," in The Oral History Review 16/1 (Spring, 1988), p. 7-20.

Eva Salgado Andrade, "Epilogue: One Year Later," in The Oral History Review 16/1 (Spring, 1988), p. 21-31.

Hope this information is helpful.

Cheers- Mary Larson
