Wagha Border Ceremony
Pakistan, May 2007
Border closing ceremony
At Wagha we saw an extraordinary spectacle. Every morning and night there is a ceremony when the border between India and Pakistan is opened and closed. The soldiers make choreographed, aggressive movements and the crowds that gather to watch shout patriotic slogans towards the Indian side. On the other side, the same thing is going on. It's an extraordinary sight, but frankly rather unsettling. Even though most of the people present seemed to enjoy themselves, it can't be a good way to improve international tolerance and cooperation. The photos that follow tell the story...
See a (shaky) video of a part of the ceremony.

Border closing ceremony
1 Pakistani and Indian border gates.
3 This guy's job was to whip the crowd into a patriotic frenzy. And he made a successful job of it. (Probably one of the least comfortable aspects of this whole thing, for me.)
4 The guards are all very tall, with striking looks.
6 The male side of the Pakistani crowd.
8 The female side of the specially built auditorium.
9 The protagonists, and later the audience, run up to the border gates and wave the flag at the Indians gathered beyond, shouting slogans. There are people on the other side doing a similar thing.
10 Female members of the audience (only) were allowed to wave the flag at the Indians too.
13 This guy's job was to whip the crowd into a patriotic frenzy. And he made a successful job of it. (Probably one of the least comfortable aspects of this whole thing, for me.)
14 You can see the (bigger) Indian crowd in this picture.
16 After a while, the soldiers suddenly make a brisk appearance, and begin their show of defiant stamping and goose-stepping.
21 The marching was quick, the movements brusque, and there were many high kicks and foot stampings.
22 After stamping, the guard finishes with a flourish (and some aggressive face-pulling that I didn't manage to capture).
29 The flags are lowered past each other. The one redeeming part of this was that, despite some pretty aggressive facing-off, the Pakistani and Indian soldiers shook hands before the gates were shut.
