I am in New Zealand on a work vacation, so I can only follow what is going on in China on http://t.sina.com.cn/, the Chinese twitter.

It is hardly the official Xinhua release, its not even as official as my column here in China Daily, but it is the first form of citizen journalism in China. So let me tell you, very unofficially, what the people are tweeting about our law-making body.

The first tweet I saw was a fantastic piece of photo journalism. At the arts and cultural council, Mr. Feng Xiaogang, the esteemed box office wonderboy director of China is picking his teeth with his mouth wide open, his eyes wide open, and his hand stuck fairly deep in his mouth. This photo had a high pass around rate, last time I looked, something like more than 400 times. The comments to the photo will have you rolling on the floor with laughter. One suggested that all teeth-picking should be banned at the congress, “since delegates have so many other privilleges already,”the writer suggested, “they can forgo this little ugly habit for a better image.”

The second tweet I noticed was that Mr. Zhang Yimou, another esteemed movie director and box office golden boy, suggested that there should be more movie theatres in China. “As a law?” asked a tweet, “what kind of legislative bill is this?” Personally, I think Mr. Zhang grabbed the wrong papers that morning, he left his bill at home and took his business plan instead. Way to Go!

Last but not least is a Ms. Zhang Mei, a fellow fashion editor. Ms. Zhang publishes a newspaper about beauty. She is known for knock-you-dead legislative bills. At the last congress, she submitted a bill to give woman a week off during menstruation.  Hmm. What do you think, Girls? Shall we hit the street in support of 12 weeks paid vacation? I for one support this bill whole heartedly.

This year, Ms. Zhang came up with an even more amazing piece of legislation. The first one is a National Holiday designated to loving women’s breasts. Wow! Now that’s radical, we are not talking about breast cancer awareness, we are talking about a Boob’s Day as national holiday. As opposed to her Menstuation Day bill, the Boob’s Day bill can be for boys. Maybe she is trying to trade one bill for the other like on Capitol Hill.

The second piece of legislaion Ms. Zhang proposed was that there should be more hospitals cosmetic surgery. It is obvious that she mistook her business plan for a bill as well, just like Zhang Yimou.

So, even though I am not a delegate to the congresses, may I propose a national holiday for all women on the day that Ms. Zhang gets brain surgery?
