前言：
1911年，巴黎歌剧院里面的东西将要被拍卖掉。70多岁的Raoul，坐在轮椅里，买了
一个音乐盒子，他望着歌剧院里的陈设，回忆起了巴黎歌剧院的过去，那时他还很
年轻，那时巴黎歌剧园也是最高峰的时期。

 

剧情1：
时光倒退到1881年，那时巴黎歌剧院正在排演歌剧Hannibal，prima donna(意大利
语，意思是歌剧领唱头角，女主角)Carlotta正在唱歌，突然舞台背景(a backdrop)掉
了下来，差点咂到她的头上，人们惊恐了，大叫到“是歌剧鬼魂”。Carlotta气坏
了，她拒绝唱下去，继而愤怒离开了歌剧院。

在没有替角(understudies)的情况下，经理人伤心地准备取消这场戏，这时芭蕾舞教
师Madame Giry的女儿Meg也就是Christine Daae的朋友推荐Christine Daae代替Carlotta演唱，因为Christine已经跟着一个神秘的老师学了很久的唱歌了。

 

Christine过去一直在合唱团里唱，虽然很有天赋，但是一直没有好好利用，直到被称为“歌剧鬼魂”的神秘人物教她唱歌，才让她的天赋发挥出来。在大家的满心怀疑下，Christine踌躇地(tentatively)开唱，不久，她就完全抛开担心，张开了她美丽的歌喉，唱起了优美动听“think of me”：

Think of me, think of me fondly, when we've said goodbye.

Remember me once in a while - please promise me you'll try.

When you find that, once again, you long to take your heart back and be free

- if you ever find a moment, spare a thought for me...

We never said our love was evergreen, or as unchanging as the sea -

Christine充满感情的优美歌声不仅打动了在场的所有人，还包括歌剧院新来的年轻
贵族(nobleman)也是赞助人(patron)的Raoul，以及歌剧鬼魂本人(歌剧鬼魂一直隐
藏在歌剧院地下室)。这时Raoul也认出了Christine是他儿时的朋友，他爱上了美丽
的她。

Christine做了主唱，这天晚上，她盛装演出，并且得到了极大的成功。

演出结束后，Christine的朋友Meg偷偷来到化装室找到Christine，问她怎么学的唱
歌。Christine告诉她有一个神秘人物“Angel of Music”(音乐天使)常常过来指导
他，这个神秘人物给她带来快乐的同时也让她害怕。二人唱起了“Angel of Music”
这首歌：

歌词大意是Meg问Christine唱歌的秘密，到底谁是她的老师。Christine回答，说她
父亲过去告诉过她有音乐天使，她能感觉到这个音乐天使就在这个房间里。Meg问谁
是这个音乐天使，二人又同时呼唤音乐天使的出现。
歌声刚落，Meg妈妈把Meg叫走，经理人把Raoul带来了，她很高兴见到他，二人追忆
往事(reminisce)，他邀请她去晚餐，於是离开让她穿衣出去。当Raoul一离开，歌
剧鬼魂的声音出现了，他很不高兴，唱起了Angel of music/The Mirror。Christine请求他的原谅，并恳请他现身。他同意了，在Christine身后的镜子里出现，镜子展开
后，出现了一个通道，歌剧鬼魂伸出了他的手，Christine跟着她走进了通道。这时，
Raoul回来了，发现化装间空无一人。

歌剧鬼魂带着Christine走过又深又长的地下通道，然后划船通过一个点满蜡烛的地
下湖，终於到了他的地下宫殿(Subterreanean Lair)，然后恳求她为他唱歌。

他向她解释他对音乐的爱好，并且用自己的声音和歌声来引诱她，他唱起了“Music
of the night”：
I have brought you to the seat of sweet music's throne . . .
to this kingdom where all must pay homage to music . . .
music . . .
You have come here, for one purpose, and one alone . . .
Since the moment，I first heard you sing,

歌词大意是，是我把你带到了甜蜜音乐的宝座，是我把你带到了人人都必须向音乐
致敬的音乐王国，从我第一次听到你唱歌，我把你带来这里的唯一目的，就是为了
我的音乐为我服务，为我唱歌。把你先前所知道的世界抛开，让你的心灵飞翔，你
会过着跟过去完全不同的生活，只有这样，你才能属於我。
他给Christine看了他按照Christine样子做的穿上了婚纱的人体模特(mannequin)，
Christine因为过於惊讶所看到的一切而突然昏迷过去。

鬼魂把Christine轻轻抱到床上，让她安静入睡了。

第二天一早醒来，Christine看见鬼魂在他的钢琴面前谱写歌曲，Christine边唱歌
“I remember”边走到鬼魂的背后：
CHRISTINE：
I remember there was mist . . .
swirling mist upon a vast, glassy lake . . .
There were candles all around
and on the lake there was a boat,
and in the boat there was a man . . .
(她走到鬼魂背后，想伸向鬼魂的面具)
Who was that shape in the shadows?
Whose is the face in the mask?
(她趁鬼魂不注意，把他的面具摘掉，鬼魂气恼地向她扑过去，Christine看见了鬼
魂的面孔，但是观众看不到)。
PHANTOM：

鬼魂气急败坏地咒骂Christine，最后二人都满含泪水，鬼魂向Christine示爱，他唱
道起了“Stranger Than You Dreamt It”：

this loathsome gargoyle, who burns in hell, but secretly yearns for heaven,
secretly . . .secretly . . .

Oh, Christine . . .
意思是虽然他外貌丑陋，但是他也心底秘密地爱着美丽的Christine，他希望她能看
到他丑陋外貌的背后是多么渴望真正的爱。听到这里，Christine把面具还给了他，
他带上面具，面对观众又唱到：
Come we must return -
those two fools
who run my theatre
will be missing you.
他决定把她送回地面，因为她还必须要去歌剧院唱歌。

地面上，在歌剧院经理的办公室里，Raoul，Carlotta，和两个经理为收到的有歌剧
鬼魂大写名字O.G.(Opera Ghost)的纸条而疑惑，Carlotta指责是Raoul冒名给她的
纸条，因为纸条写着要她放弃(relinquish)领唱让位给Christine，芭蕾舞教师Madame Giry也拿着署名OG的纸条过来，上面写着要经理把第5个包厢留给他专坐，并且让Christine做歌剧Muto的领唱(leading role)， 把Carlotta降为不出声的小配角。
Carlotta指责是Raoul因为跟Christine有情侣关系而安排的这一切，经理向Carlotta许下诺言，一定让她保留领唱位置。
那天歌剧Muto的晚上，果然Carlotta还是领唱，而Christine则是个不出声的小配角
(mute pageboy)，Raoul这勇敢地坐在包厢五看戏。戏开始了，没多久，鬼魂在前台
出现了，他奚落(taunt)着Carlotta，最后让她失了声。Carlotta气急败坏走了，经
理不得不宣布让Christine来接着演出。正当芭蕾舞快要开始时，一个歌剧院的演员
的尸体悬在舞台中间，大家惊吓不已，混乱中(melee)，Christine找到Raoul，二人
走到了屋顶，一个安全的地方。

在屋顶，Christine想要告诉Raoul她看见了鬼魂而且还到过他的家，她在歌曲Why Have
You Brought Me Here?/Raoul, I've Been There中唱道：
Raoul:
Why have you brought me here?

Christine:
Can’t go back there!

Raoul:
We must return!

Christine:
He'll kill you!
His eyes will find us there!

Raoul:
Christine, don't say that . . .

Christine:
Those eyes that burn!

Raoul:
Don't even think it . . .

Christine:
And if he has to kill a thousand men -

Raoul:
Forget this waking nightmare . . .

Chrisitne:
The Phantom of the Opera will kill . . .

Raoul:
This phantom is a fable . . .Believe me . . .

Christine:

歌曲里Christine告诉Raoul自己见过鬼魂，但是Raoul就是不信，Christine说自己见
过鬼魂那张丑陋可怕的脸孔，这张永远都不会忘记的脸孔，但是他的歌声还有音乐
却是那么美妙和甜蜜，让她无法忘怀。
Raoul虽然不相信她的话，但是他发誓要永远保护她，爱她，他唱起了All I Ask of
You：
RAOUL：

Forget these wide-eyed fears.
I'm here, nothing can harm you -
my words will warm and calm you.

这是Christine和Raoul爱的宣言，二人许下诺言后离开屋顶。这是鬼魂出现了，他
听见了Christine和Raoul的谈话，痛苦万分，伤心地流下了眼泪，悲伤化成愤怒，
他发誓要复仇(vows vengeance)。回到歌剧院后，他把吊灯摔下舞台。
