Meeting of the Mice
(A retelling of an Aesop’s fable)
What are the mice going to do about the car?
Aug. 23, 2008

One by one, mice of all sizes and ages presented ideas. One after another their ideas were talk down. All grew tired as the night wore on. Everyone was all talked out.

Then someone shouted loudly, waking up all the nappers. “Aha! Suppose that the cat wears a bell around his neck. As he moves, the bell will ring, and he will tell on himself as he approaches us. we’ll be warned, and we can race to safety!”

“Wonderful!” shouted a mouse in the crowd.
“Yes!” agreed another. Everyone chattered excitedly as they talked up this perfect plan.

But after a moment, a wee, little mouse stepped forward. “Excuse me,” he squeaked quietly. “I don’t want to speak against this idea, for it is a marvelous one, indeed. However, I have a question. Which one of us,” he asked, “will put the bell on the car?”

Suddenly everyone grew quiet. No one was willing. No one could be talked into it.

Readers, here’s a lesson that I’ll tell all of you: The greatest of ideas can’t be achieved unless someone is willing to attempt it.
