Since the industrialization of our country, the environment we are living in has been seriously destroyed. But for a period of time, our government has realized the importance of the environment to our human being, and has taken a series of measures in order to reserve our environment. Now, the lawn has already been a symbol of city greening, and the government will be praised if it gives more green lawns to the city, so many cities is now busy growing lawns competitively, with a slogan of “Greening the City”. However, have you ever thought, is it indeed a fact that the lawn is the best way of greening the city? However you think, I don’t think so.

First of all, lawns cost a lot. It is obvious that it needs plenty of water to irrigate lawns. Most of the swards applied for city greening are not local, but introduced, always at a price, from quite a distance away, even from a foreign country, and no one knows whether or not these swards will get used to the climate of the target cities. In quite a few cities the rainfall is far not enough for the exotic swards, so the government has to develop an irrigating system to water them. It is well known that there is a lack of water in most parts of China. In some cities, even daily use of water cannot be guaranteed, still less for extra use. But the government still does not stint the water for lawns. Moreover, a certain number of water will evaporate into the air before it reaches the roots of the lawns. Apart from that, the government should have to mow the lawns and add new swards regularly, and of cause, that is not for free. Then, lawns turn to be a huge burden for the city, but not an assistant.

What’s more, lawns have taken up too much land. The government is incredibly generous when cutting large pieces of land for lawns. And it is so funny that people are not allowed to step on the lawns, otherwise, they will be blamed for doing harm to the environment. This has already been a common regulation of environmental reservation. Whereas I cannot really see what good it is to leave so large a piece of land there in the crowded city, not available for people. Many people is blaming the government for having built so much squares in the cities, but I think the should blame much for the lawns, for the squares at least provide people a room to play, to rest, or to do other things they can imagine, but lawns fail to do even this.

In some cities, many trees have been cut down, giving way to lawns, just because lawns are considered more civilized, and more beautiful. What a shame! At this point, lawns seem to be a kind of disaster to the environment. It is always the case that trees do much better to the environment than lawns, for they can refresh more air and give shelter to people in the hot summer days or when it is raining, and most importantly, they inhabit much less land. Maybe it is just because trees need much less land that the government has replaced them with lawns. Why? Think carefully for a while, and you will understand. It is a matter of figures. Lawns have taken up so much land that they will help to give a good rise to the average occupancy of green land. Then the purpose of city greening is not that pure.

In a word, lawns does not do as well as it is considered to help improve the environment, although it does do some good. The final objective of city greening is to make our environment more comfortable for us to live in, but not just make our surrounding green. It one cannot realize this, little good will be done to the environment. After all, it has realized that the environment is so important to us. That is a good start. And we still have a long long way to go to protect this unique planet we are living on. Fewer lawns, and more trees!
