    做事或者解决问题往往会有几个可供选择的办法或方案（choices, alternatives or options）. 如果用一定的标准来衡量的话，就可以看得出这些方案的优劣。中国人把这些方案根据结果的好坏分为“上策、中策、下策”。英语中常见表示“上策”的说法有best bet, optimal choice. 例子有：
    That’s his best bet. 那是他的最佳选择。
    Tourism may be the town’s best bet. 旅游业也许是这个城市（发展经济的）的最佳选择。
    It's generally accepted that India and China are good long-term bets. 一般认为中国与印度是（在投资与合作方面）比较好的长期选择。

    治疗一个病有很多药，一般情况下医生会首先考虑使用的药叫“首选药”。很多东西（包括人）也会成为我们的“首选”。最常用（我认为也是最好用的）表示“首选”的词组是of choice。 不信看下面的例子：
    Penicillin is the antibiotic of choice in most cases. 在大多数情况下青霉素是首先抗菌素。
    The DM emerged as the currency of choice throughout the former Soviet empire. 德国马克成为前苏联的首选外币。
    Barley is the grain of choice for beer production. 大麦是用于生产啤酒的首选谷类。
    The IMF and the other banks continued to be the "instruments of choice" for this sort of aid. 国际货币基金组织.与其它银行仍然是这类经援的首选机构。
    Mr. Wang is the man of choice for the task. 老王是这个任务的首选人物。   

    The resume is not the document of choice. 简历并不是（考虑是否录用的）首选资料。

    还可以用in the first place来表示“首选”， 譬如：
    Better still would be a way to prevent strokes in the first place—beyond the universal prescription to stop smoking, to exercise and control cholesterol. 更好的办法是从一开始就预防中风---用一种一般的戒烟、锻炼与控制胆固醇以外的方法。
    I wouldn't do it in the first place. 我不会一开始就这样做。

 

    在很多情况下，由于条件的限制我们无法实施最好的选择。在这种情况下我们希望能有仅次于“最好”的选择。这个“仅次于最好”的选择在英语中叫the next best thing/choice. 还是给几个例子吧：
    The next best thing will be to have a degree from a joint program between a Chinese institution of high learning and a western one. （如果不能出国读大学），退而求其次的选择就是读中外大学联合办学的学位。
    The next best thing to knowing something is to know where to find it. 如果你不知道某个知识，知道在哪里能够查到它也不错。

    有些方案，只要有可能就千万不要选择。这样的选择或方案我们称之为“下策”。在英语中叫last thing或last choice. 很多人常常把这个词组中的last翻译成“最后一个”，那是比较低级的错误。希望我的博友们过去没有犯过，以后也再不犯。还是用例子来巩固一下吧：
    下面是昨天“纽约时报”关于巴以关系的一句话：
    Creating new obstacles to peace with the Palestinians is the last thing Israel needs after the Lebanon fiasco. 以色列在黎巴嫩的败笔之后，继续为巴以和平制造新障碍将是一下下策。（不是”以色列需要的最后一件事“哦！）
    一篇文章谈到某个啤酒商赞助大学足球比赛的事说到：
    At a time when campuses are awash in alcohol, a beer sponsorship of college football's most prestigious honor is the last thing anybody need.在一个酒精充斥校园的时代，由啤酒商赞助大学足球赛最权威的荣誉实在是一件能避免就应该避免的事。
    That is the last thing you should do.  此乃下策。

    This is the last thing I want to see. 这是我最不愿意看到的事。

    最后学两句有用的话吧：
    I'll give Mr. Han your message first thing tomorrow morning. 我明天早上的第一件事就是把你的话传给老韩。
    I always take the dog for a short walk last thing before going to bed. 我总是在晚上就寝以前做的最后一件事就是带狗去散散步.

    这里last thing, first thing就是指每天晚上做的最后一件，或每天早上要做的第一件事。在句中做状语。
