II. Answer the following questions.

1.    Why did the author freeze his tracks as he emerged from a forest?
Because he saw a huge, black Alaska timber wolf caught in a trap no more than 20 paces away in a flat marshy area.

2.    Why did the author say that the wolf was lucky he had happened along?
Because the hunter who had laid the trap had died of a heart attack a week before.

3.    What was the author’s first response when he saw the wolf was a female full of milk?
His first response is that there must be a batch of hungry baby wolves somewhere.

4.    In what way did he lure the baby wolves out of the hole?
By imitating the high-pitched sound of a mother wolf calling her young.

5.    Why was the mother wolf becoming aggressive?
Because she wanted to protect her babies.

6.    How did the author find the mother wolf something to eat?
He spotted the leg of a winter-killed deer sticking out of the snow, cut off a piece and gave it to the mother wolf.

7.    Did the author win the mother wolf’s confidence finally? If so, how did he manage to do this?
Yes, he did. Over the next few days, the author played with the baby wolves and brought her food each day. When he felt the time was right, he slowly placed his hand on her leg. She made no threatening move—he had won her confidence.

8.    On the fifth day, how did the mother wolf respond to the author’s warm-hearted efforts to help?
The mother wolf seemed to understand the author. She moved her tail slightly. When the author placed his hand on its injured leg, the wolf jumped back but made no threatening move.

9.    How did the author free the wolf?
He wedged a stick between the jaws of the trap and applied pressure; the slot between the two jaws of the trap became wider, and the wolf pulled free.

10. Based on his experience with wild animals, the author expected that the wolf would gather her pups and vanish into the woods. But what was the mother wolf’s response after she was set free?
The wolf crept towards him cautiously; she sniffed his hands and arms slowly and then began licking his fingers. All this was contrary to common beliefs about the wolf’s nature.
