榆林，现在已是个较大的城市了，因为地势平坦，可扩展空间大，以后的城市发展仍会很快。
在现代城市中间，有一个围有较完整城墙的古城，据说很多都是明代的建筑，也有不久前新整修过的。

榆林古城也有一条中轴线，最南是凌霄塔，然后是文昌阁、万佛楼、星明楼、钟楼、凯歌楼和鼓楼等所谓六楼，一直指向北边很远处的镇北台。

古城内外还有其他一些古建，主要是戴兴寺等，这是无量殿附近的财神宫
