Gatsby - 9

(2006-05-01 21:28:45)
Miss Baker and I exchanged a short glance. I was about to speak when she sat up and said 'Sh!' in a warning voice. A quiet but passionate murmur could be heard in the room beyond. Miss Baker leaned forward, unashamed, trying to hear. The murmur ceased.
'This Mr Gatsby you spoke of is my neighbour,' I began.
'Don't talk. I want to hear what happens.'
'Is something happening?' I enquired innocently.
'You mean to say you don't know?' said Miss Baker, honestly surprised. 'I thoutht everybody knew.'
    'I don't.'
'Why... ' she said hesitanyly. 'Tom's got some woman in New York.'
    'Got some woman?' I repeated.
    Miss Baker nodded.
'She might have the decency not to telephone him at dinner time. Don't you think?'
Almost before I had understood her meaning. Tom and Daisy had returned.
'It could't be helped.' cried Daisy with tense gaiety.
She sat down, glanced searchingly at Miss Baker and then at me, and continued, 'I looked outdoors for a minute, and it's very romantic outdoors.'
Her voice sang. 'It's romantic, isn't it, Tom?'
'Very romantic,' he said, and then added miserably to me, 'If it's light enough after dinner, I want to take you down to the stables.'
The telephone rang inside, startingly. Daisy shook her head decisively at Tom and the subject of stables vanished into air. I was conscious of wanting to look at everyone and at the same time avoid all eyes. Then Tom and Miss Baker walked back into the library, trying to look pleasantly interested and a little deaf. I followed Daisy round to the front of the house. We sat down side by side on a garden bench.
Daisy took her face in her hands as if feeling its lovely shape. She was plainly feeling strong emotion so I asked some polite questions about her little girl.
