SECOND_DAY_OF_SSTS_2019

(2019-08-28 20:20:37)
19th August 2019: the second day of the University of Padova - ShanghaiTech Summer school
started with the lecture of prof. Santini "Gods and Heroes in Ancient Greeks and Romans
Mythology"

This lecture was focused on the Greek and Roman mythology. Prof. Santini also explained
how the Christian world took pagan symbols giving them different meanings, and how later,
in the Renaissance times, the ancient myths were reinterpreted using allegories.
A lecture that made us travel in time: 2 hours to go from the 2nd Century B.C. to the 16th
century A.D….a fascinating journey through stories and images.
Heroes and powerful gods materialized in front of us, breathtaking battles, love stories
between Olympic gods and humans, the creation of the world and the struggle for
knowledge in the myth of Prometheus.

The journey continued through the halls of the Doge's Palace. Rooms full of golden wood,
amazing frescos and paintings, majestic staircases in what once was the seat of the political
power of the Serenissima Republic of Venice.

Finally, just as prisoners did, we walked across the Bridge of Sighs – the last breath of fresh
air, the last breath of freedom, before being locked in the underground cells.

Last visit of the day: the Correr Museum, a fascinating insight into the art and history of
Venice. The museum is divided in sections: the Napoleonic Wing - a 19th century kings and
emperors' palace with the sumptuous Neoclassical Rooms house a noteworthy collection of
works by the great sculptor Antonio Canova (1757-1822).
Then the Imperial Apartments of the Royal Palace, where the Empress Elizabeth of Austria
resided during her visits in Venice. And last the Procuratie Nuove, designed by the architect
Vincenzo Scamozzi (1552-1616), which once housed some of the most important civic
authorities of the Republic of Venice, with collections that document various aspects of
Venetian History, from daily life to public institutions, from naval achievements to local
festivities.

Definitely a full immersion in art and culture!
