“为什么乌鸦很像写字台？”这句话是疯帽子第一次见到爱丽丝时候问的问题，原文是：“Why is a raven like a writing desk?”在电影最后爱丽丝喝超恶心的炸脖龙血之前疯帽子解释说：“我也不知道。”

  开始我以为肯定是英文上有什么一语双关的意思，字幕没有反映出来，回到家赶紧做了功课，找到一段原著在1896年再版的序言，发现其实真的没什么特别。虽然给出了一个解释，但是作者也承认这不过是个马后炮，当初写的时候这个问题还真就没有答案。

　　序言原文是这么说的：

• Enquiries have been so often addressed to me, as to whether any answer to the Hatter’s Riddle can be imagined, that I may as well put on record here what seems to me to be a fairly appropriate answer, viz: Because it can produce a few notes, though they are very flat; and it is NEVAR put with the wrong end in front! This, however, is merely an afterthought; the riddle as originally invented, had no answer at all. 

  关于答案，前半句比较费解。查了一下词典，note的解释里除了常用的“笔记、便签”之外，还有“单音；音调；音符”的意思；Flat除了“平坦、扁平”之外，还有“色彩单调地；无反差地”的意思。或许是可以理解成写字台能写笔记同时很平，乌鸦能发出单音同时是极度单色调的，也就是都能制造Notes(Can produce a few notes)，同时都Flat(though they are very flat)。后半句好解释，写字台当然是不会放翻了(Never put with the wrong end in front)，而乌鸦的英文是Raven，正好是Nevar翻过来（NEVAR put with the wrong end in front）。此处原书中将Never写成了Nevar，跟全聚德的德字没有里面一横是一个性质，属于故意为之。据网上说后来有的再印版本的编辑自作聪明给改成“正确”的了，看来编辑这行当的人爱自作聪明真是有传统的。 

  这么有趣的问题除了作者的官方解释还有其他版本，比较容易搜到的是下面几种，来自一个叫Sam Loyd的人，根据网路搜索，此人似乎是一个棋手同时还是猜谜书的作者。把我理解的意思写在括号里了。

• Because the notes for which they are noted are not noted for being musical notes.（乌鸦和书桌有的note都不做为音乐的音符解释）
• Poe wrote on both.（诗人Edgar Allan Poe写过一首诗叫Raven，而既然是诗人肯定难免用写字台，所以Wrote on both）
• They both have inky quills. (写字台有漆黑的鹅毛笔，乌鸦有漆黑的羽毛，所以Both have inky quills)
• Bills and tales are among their characteristics.(Bill有“单子、清单”等的意思，同时还有“鸟嘴”的意思；tale有“讲述，叙述“的意思，特指精彩但不一定完全真实的叙述，同时有”故事；传说；谣言“的意思。所以账单和在上面写不实故事是写字台的特征，有鸟嘴和谣言是乌鸦的特征。即Bills and tales)
• Because they both stand on their legs, conceal their steels ("steals"), and ought to be made to shut up.（全都靠腿站着，后面理解不了……）

  总而言之，乌鸦像写字台不是没有原因，当然有原因。
