Finland is all about forests and lakes. So it is not surprising that wood has always been a 

natural material that Finns have already used for years in their art. 

Working with wood – be it making a boat, a building or a decoration for the home – is a Finnish 

tradition which has been handed down from generation to generation. In Finland, academic 

sculpture owes much of its inspiration to the wooden folk sculpture tradition which became 

established at the end of the 19th century. 

The Modern Art Museum EMMA in Espoo has an exhibition offering the visitor the best of 

Finland’s wooden sculptures. The curator of the exhibition is professor Leena Peltola (b. 1921), 

who has long been a name to reckon with in the Finnish art world. She has participated in an 

advisory capacity in the purchase of more than 6,000 art works for many Finnish collections 

including the Saastamoinen Foundation Collection on display at EMMA. 

The exhibition Wood in the hands of the sculptor – Finnish sculpture from the 1950s to the 

2000s goes back to the earliest works when there was a lively discussion between young 

sculptors and more conservative thinkers as to whether a tree stump was art. The new 

generation of artists treated wood freely – burning, scraping and patinating it. 

Among the participating artists are Martti Aiha, Kari Caven, Tom Engblom, Radoslaw Gryta, 

Mauno Hartman, Jussi Heikkilä, Maija Helasvuo, Veikko Hirvimäki, Pasi Karjula, Pauno 

Pohjolainen, Kimmo Pyykkö, Riku Riippa, Joakim Sederholm, Anneli Sipiläinen, Jyrki Siukonen, 

Kain Tapper, Kirsi Tapper, Nora Tapper, Hanna Vahvaselkä and Heikki Virolainen. For many of 

the artists taking part in the exhibition, wood is one material among many, for others it forms the

basis of their artistic production. The versatility of wood and the fascination of this material 

shared by these artists can be seen at EMMA until 31 August.

今天早回来的原因是忘带眼镜了，在书店里看书看不见，只能看标题。结果到家也是半夜12点了，这就是日本。

每天都有事情可以消磨你，我有7个月没有回日本，也是最长一次间隔。主要是策划两个海外展和在大学里教书。这几天几乎天天在买书，没有这些没发深入我的工作。

今天买到新出版的野口勇的画册，是日本野口勇日本财团所编，财团理事长是和泉正敏，他以前是野口勇生前的助手，一名石匠。十年钱我去四国的牟礼参观野口勇工房时是他接待我的，从他那了解到野口勇一些生前的故事和他与野口勇的关系。这本画册最珍贵的是第一次公开了许多野口勇生前在工房的照片。其中几张有野口勇墓的小山丘的照片，勾起我万般思绪，因为我拜过那个小丘，跪在地上，合掌，把头深深的低下，直到触到地面。

我喜欢上星野之宣，是在书店里乱看，看来看去最后剩下你想花钱的书就是你的最爱，星野之宣就是这样到手的。昨天我在书架上发现两本《2001夜物语（原型版）》（上下篇）时，眼睛突然亮了起来，这是接近A4尺寸的大型漫画画册，震撼！！其它的书都托运，这两本我带了回来，在回程的电车上看了。这是根据库布里克的电影《2001宇宙之旅》改编成漫画的，这些漫画曾在一本日本杂志上连载了两年零一个月，每次是12页。

日本的新年是年底最后一天，日本已经没有农历，过阳历年，可是日本还保留国号，这又显得很传统，比如现在开始了平成二十一年，很难换算出公元的纪年。

但是每年最后一天的零点听钟声，和到神社烧香投币许愿，包括把旧年的牌子都投入火坑里焚烧，可是中国的风俗。

 

 

我家住在妙莲寺，这是以妙莲寺这座神社而取名的。我看见人们在零点之后还排着长长的队去许愿。还有许多人围着大火，我听见有背对火的女孩悄悄的说，屁股烤的很暖和。
