Merry Christmas to all of my friends in China. I can't believe
that one third of the season has been completed and we are getting
ready to celebrate Christmas. It is always a strange time of year
for us in the NBA. There is usually so many distractions around
this time of year. You are busy buying presents for your family and
friends, family usually joins you to help celebrate the holidays,
and it is a busy, busy time of year. Unfortunately, our fans and
coaches don't want to hear excuses of how we are distracted. We
still must perform our jobs and perform them at a high level.

I told our team a theory that I was told when I was a rookie.
There are 4 times in a season that a team is mentally soft and are
not necessarily completely focused on basketball. The first time is
at the start of the year. Teams and players are excited to play,
but there is not the mental focus that will come once you settle
into a routine. You are not 'battle tested' at this point of the
season. The next time it is difficult to focus is during the
holiday season in December. There is so much going on, it is easy
to become distracted. Teams and players also have trouble focusing
around the All-Star weekend. At this point of the year, we have
played roughly 50 games, your body aches, and you are ready for 5
days off from basketball. It is easy to start focusing on your
vacation or your plans instead of basketball. The last time that
teams become soft is after the All-Star break. You have just had a
great All-Star break, your body feels rested and rejuvenated,
sometimes it is difficult to throw yourself back into the grind of
the season.

The best teams handle these four periods with maturity and
focus. The bad teams simply do not. To this point, our team has
been focused on the task at hand. It will be interesting to see how
we handle these 'danger' periods.

Have a tough game in Orlando tonight. I have to get my rest!

Merry Christmas to all my friends in China.

Talk to you soon

People often ask me what are the best and worst parts of playing in
the NBA. I'd thought I'd tackle those two issues in this blog. Let
me preface this by saying that the best parts greatly outweigh the
worst parts. I don't know how many jobs are like that, but trust me
when I say that I thank God and my lucky stars every night for the
chance to play in the NBA for a living.

Aside from being able to take care of my family financially and do
a few nice things for myself as well, the best part of the NBA is
the challenge. I never describe my job as boring. When I come to
the gym and prepare for a game, I never know how it's going to
unfold. Am I going to play a good game? Will I miss all of my
shots? Will I shut my man down? Will we win? You have to go out and
prove yourself every single night. No one cares if you had a great
game last week, the only focus is what you are going to do in the
next game. When I retire from basketball, hopefully many years from
now, this is what I will miss the most about my job. I love the
challenge and the mojo you get from taking this challenge and
coming out on top.

There are very few things in life that can compare to the
camaraderie of a locker room. A team is like a family. Sometimes
you have great connections, sometimes you get in arguments. The
number one thing most NBA players and pro athletes say that they
miss is the locker room and the friendship of teammates. Your
teammates are constantly making fun of you. Whether you wear an
ugly pair of shoes to the game, make a boneheaded play, or just say
something idiotic, you know your teammates will be there to remind
you. No one is safe, but in an entertaining way. I spend more time
with my teammates than I do with my family. Yes, sometimes they get
on my nerves, but for the most part they make the journey a very
enjoyable one. I also like the summer break of a few months. Golf
and BBQ.

Like I said, the positives of the season outweigh the negatives.
People are always curious about the downsides of being an NBA
player so here is my short list. In my perfect world, we would only
play 58 regular season games. The travel gets a bit old after
awhile and I miss my family during the season. If we played every
team twice a year, once at home and once on the road, I don't think
you could find 5 NBA players that would complain. I think fans
would appreciate this as well because it wouldn't be such a time
commitment and every game would mean much more. A shorter season
would mean healthier players and a better quality of basketball
would be played. It's a win-win for everyone.

The only other major negative to playing a rigorous schedule is
that you are always battling an ailment of some sorts. There are
few days that I wake up during the season and my body feels
refreshed and energized. Usually, (for me at least), my ankles are
hurting or some days my back hurts from taking a charge the night
before. Sometimes you just get tired of physically hurting.

With that said, I have the best job in the world and I wouldn't
trade it with anyone. I am living the dream. My dream.
Everyday.

Talk to you later,

November 28, 2009

Sitting on a plane headed for Oklahoma City right now. Just lost to
the Spurs last night for our second tough loss in a row after
taking a beating from the Mavs earlier in the week. Our record is
now 8-8.

There are 2 ways to look at this record. The pessimistic viewpoint
that would focus on the games that we just didn't bring the energy
or execution and let the wins slip through our fingers, like
against Atlanta and Sacramento. We could very easily have won 3 to
4 more games than we have now. The optimistic viewpoint would focus
on the fact that we have a brand new team, we are the third
youngest team in the league and have had great wins against the
Lakers on the road and Portland at home. We have shown flashes of
brilliance and competitiveness during these great wins.

In my mind, the truth lies somewhere in the middle of these two
viewpoints. I think that when we play with great energy and spirit,
we share the basketball and play tough defense. Everyone feels like
they are a part of the victories and we play a fun and exciting
brand of basketball. For the most part, our
victories have come when we have played with this energy I speak
of. In our losses, it seems like we play listlessly and spiritless.
The basketball does not move and we play a slower style of
basketball. For us to be successful this year, we must play fast.
We must play daringly, and aggressive. We must put constant
pressure on our opponent. There will be times when we cannot make a
basket and those times will be frustrating. But this frustration
should not deter our determination to play an aggressive. In this
young season, when we fail to consistently make shots, it has
affected the defensive end of the court where we become passive. We
must run, take a large number of 3 point shots, attack the rim,
draw fouls and play with a somewhat reckless abandon. This is the
style that will give us the best chance to win.

We still have a lot of basketball to play, only 15% of the year has
been played. We must stay around the .500 winning percentage for
the next month if we want to take advantage of the easier schedule
that we will have when January rolls around. The only way to do
this is to play with incredible spirit and togetherness. The good
news is that we have shown that we are capable of playing this way.
The bad news is that we are not consistent with this style of play
yet. I feel we can be this team.
Thanks for reading, talk to you soon.

People always ask me who my favorite players in the NBA are. Every
NBA player is also a fan of the great players in the league. Here
is a short list of some the players I respect and why I respect
them.

Kobe Bryant-I think Kobe is
the best player in the league because he is relentless. He never
gives in to illness or fatigue. He is the ultimate competitor and
he has my utmost respect.

LeBron James-I respect
LeBron because he had unbelievably high expectations coming out of
high school and he has lived up to every last one. The he may have
had the highest expectations ever of a young player coming into the
league. He continues to improve and has a desire to get better and
win. I respect that.

Steve Nash-I just love the
way he plays. He plays the game the way the game should be played,
free and fast. He always tries to get his teammates involved. Much
respect.

Dirk Nowitkzi-The guy is
just a machine, he goes to the gym every night if he does not have
a game and practices shooting. Unbelievable. No one does
that.

Brandon Roy-My favorite
young player. He just plays the right way, always under control. He
is going to be an all-star for many years to come.

Grant Hill-Growing up, I
wanted to be Grant Hill. He is 100% class. He is still my idol. I
want to grow up to be Grant Hill.

Michael Dunleavy Jr.-My
best friend in the world, he's like a brother to me. My roommate at
Duke, we always want to beat each other, but off the court, we've
never had boring time.

Those are probably my 7 favorite players in the NBA. I like to
watch all of these guys on TV.

If there is one place that I really enjoy winning, it has to be in
Utah against the Jazz. Of all the arenas and teams to play in the
NBA, I would say that it is the most difficult place to win. The
Jazz just play so well and it seems like the bounces never go your
way in Utah. That's why I am especially proud of our team tonight
after we beat the Jazz in Utah. We had great scoring balance, 8
guys scored in double figures. That shows that we had great ball
movement. People who don’t follow our team regularly always ask us,
how are you going to replace the scoring that Yao
provided? The answer, while more complicated than
it seems, is ball movement. We must share the ball and play as a
team. I have always believed that a team that plays with intensity
and unselfishness is much tougher to beat than a team of talented
individuals. This is a lesson that our team must carry with us
every time we step on the court.

We are still a very young team. A team that is searching for its
identity. We hope to play a fast, up-tempo style. While we have
scored a lot of points thus far in the season, we are still
developing as a team. When we play the top teams, it will take all
of our focus and determination to beat them. That is why it will be
interesting to see how we do against the world champion LA Lakers
on Wednesday in Houston. It will be a great test for our
team.

But for now, we are enjoying this victory, it doesn't happen too
often in Salt Lake City. So we are going to enjoy this plane ride
home before we turn our sights to the Lakers.

　　October 26, 2009

We just landed in Portland, and this time tomorrow night we
will openthe season against the Portland Trail Blazers. I can't
believe that theseason is here again. The summer just went so
quickly。

The last time we were in Portland, the circumstances were much
different. We were here for the playoffs, we had just won 55 games
inthe regular season and we came to Portland to end our string of
firstround exits. This time we come to Portland surrounded by
question marksand uncertainty about our team. This is not to say
that we aren't herein Portland to win, we fully believe that if we
play hard and smart andtogether, that we have a chance to win. Our
team is still trying to forge our identity. Especially without Yao
in the middle. We are going to play much faster and at a tempo that
will seem very different from those who have watched us in the
years past。

I am excited to prove those who have already written us off,
that theyare wrong. The challenge ahead is great, no doubt about
that, but the potential of tough people should never be overlooked.
We have a team ofplayers that have continually been cast off as too
small, too slow, andnot good enough. Instead of believing those
things people say about us,each of us, in our own way, have worked
harder to overcome the odds and the doubts of others. We are in the
NBA, to an extent, because we aretough individuals and don't let
the outside expectations stop us fromexcellence. For us, it's just
another year to prove people wrong。

I don't promise anything about this year. While some like to
promise playoff berths and championships, that's not my style. I do
believe that we are going to play hard and be a gutsy team. We will
have theopportunity to scare some people with our sheer effort. I
think we willbe competitive, for the aforementioned reasons。

So if you are a fan of teams and people who like to buck the
odds, thencome aboard, our bandwagon is empty and there is plenty
of room。

PEAK BLOG

10.18.09

I am back from my hamstring injury that I suffered on the first
day of practice. It has taken me a few days to get back into
rhythm, but I feel pretty good now. The first game I played against
the Milwaukee Bucks, I fell down on the first 4 possessions of the
game. I had no balance. It sounds strange, but even missing a week
throws off your timing and balance. In my second game, I made 8 of
9 three pointers and had a game high 26 points. I have never had a
shooting game like the game I had against the Raptors, I just felt
like I couldn't miss! The bad news is that it was only a preseason
game, the good news is that I proved that I am capable of having
games like the one against the Raptors. My coaches were joking with
me after the game that they are expecting 8 for 9 from three point
land from now on, haha. I told them no problem.

Our team is still trying to forge our identity. We have so many
new players, we are still trying to get comfortable with each other
and develop our chemistry. Every team is different and must develop
its own identity, you cannot force this process. I like our young
players. Besides Aaron Brooks, Kyle Lowery, and Trevor Ariza, I
think you will enjoy watching Chase Budinger and Jermaine Taylor.
Both are exciting, athletic players who are eager to play and get
better. Our new center, David Andersen, is a hard worker and a
great teammate. He is getting more comfortable everyday and will be
a good player for us.

I will reiterate that I don't think we will be a pushover of a
team that many expect our team to be. We have a lot of talent on
our roster and believe that if we play hard, smart and together, we
can be a good team. There is no question that we miss Yao and
Tracy, our margin for error is not very wide. We will play hard
every night and try to impose our up tempo style on the other team.
We just need to refine our team and define our identity.

Talk to you later,

shane

thing I have learned in the years I have been in Houston is that it
does not matter what anyone says about your team. The only thing
that matters is the commitment and the will of the team. When Yao
got hurt against the Lakers last year in the playoffs, no one
dreamed that we would win another game against the Lakers, we
proved everyone who doubted us wrong by winning not one, but two

on the season. I know everyone was anxious to hear my feelings
after we lost game 7 to the Lakers, but for me to truly reflect on
the year that had transpired, I needed a week to decompress, and
collect my thoughts. The playoffs are so intense and take so much
out of you that I probably would not have made sense if I tried to

The year started out as a very frustrating one
for me. I had never had a surgery in the NBA before and I did not
know how to alter my training preparations for the season. After I
had my ankle joint cleaned out, I tried to complete the same
training regimen that I had in previous summers when I was healthy.
Big mistake. My ankle was not ready for the serious pounding it
must take when I train for the upcoming season. As a result, I
could not work as hard and I didn't feel like I was preparing the
right way. To make matters worse, I developed a bone bruise on the
back side of my ankle. The doctors told me I had to take 6 weeks
off to completely heal my ankle. For me, this was devastating. I
rarely missed games and played through pain. That is just what I
thought I should do. Unfortunately, the doctors had different
plans.

I missed the first 20 games of the season to
completely heal my ankle. When I came back, our team just could not
find a good rhythm. Between me, Tracy, and Ron, we could not find a
consistent, healthy lineup. It was frustrating to watch and it was
frustrating to play. We knew we had an unbelievably talented team,
but we just could not put together a winning
streak.

As for myself, I was really frustrated with my
play. I felt slow and unathletic (well, that's not saying much, but
I felt slow and unathletic even for my standards!). I could not
jump or move very well. I felt that it affected both my offense and
defense. I thought it was my worst year of my career. I remember at
the All-Star break telling my wife that this just was a bad year
and maybe next year would be better, I was really down on
myself.

After the All-Star break, something magical
happened with our team. Tracy announced that he was getting season
ending surgery. It seemed like everyone counted us out. They said
that without Tracy, we wouldn't have a chance to even make the
playoffs. The funny thing was that without Tracy in the lineup, we
knew we had to play harder and smarter. And we did. And we started
winning. Winning big. Our confidence grew and we started to have a
lot of fun competing on the floor together. We became a team in the
truest sense. Not only were we in the playoff race, we were
fighting for home court advantage! Talk about a
turnaround.

As the season went along, I gained more strength
and athleticism. I started to feel like the old me. I started to
make more shots (although I went through a terrible slump at one
point). I began to get praise and notice for my defense again.
Before I knew it, I had put together a great season. One that I was
proud of. I was able to turn around a bad season and make it one of
my more productive seasons, which is very difficult to do. I left
the season with a great deal of satisfaction in my turnaround and
my ability to fight through anything.

As we entered the playoffs, the pressure was on
to get out of the first round. Something that the Rockets had not

worthy adversary in the first round. Again, no one gave us a chance
to win the series against them. (but did we listen to those people?
NO WAY!) After winning the first game of the series in Portland, we
knew we were in control. We were able to finish them off by winning
all of our home games. In the process, we won over the city of
Houston and made all of our Rocket fans world wide

With Tracy already out, it was a devastating blow
to lose Dikembe Mutombo to a season ending injury in the Portland
series. We knew we needed him against the Lakers, we just didn't
know how badly until we lost Yao after the 3rd game of the Lakers
series. Again, (like clockwork), people counted us out, they didn't
give us a chance to stand up to the mighty Lakers. Not only did we
answer the call in game 4, but we pushed the best team in the
Western Conference to 7 games before running out of

we continually fight through to achieve. We really have a great

that they would not have to play very hard to beat us. Especially
when Yao went down, it seemed like the entire world, including the
Lakers, thought that we would go away quietly. We always talk as a

chance to even win another game in this series. The Lakers beat us
handily in game 3 and without Yao, the chances of success were
slim. People who did not really follow our team had already made up
their minds on how this team would react. Those people don't know

they can't win because of adversity. I am as proud of this win
today as I have ever been of a win in my professional career. There
is no question that the Lakers are more talented than us, they are

I returned from Portland today after
the long flight home. The spirits of the guys was a little down for
two reasons. We knew that we let a game we could have won get away
from us and we were also felt really bad for our partner Dikembe
Mutombo who tore a tendon in his knee and must now retire from the
game of basketball.

First, let's talk about the game. We
knew Portland was going to play more aggressively than the first
game in which we controlled from the start. We knew that they were
going to try to take Yao out of the game as well, by double teaming
him and denying him the ball. Our guards Aaron Brooks, Ron Artest,
and Von Wafer did a great job of attacking the weak side of their
defense which became available because they paid so much attention
to Yao. There were 16 lead changes in the game, but ultimately we
could not stop Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge who both had big
games for them. We feel that the Blazers could not play any better
and while we played a solid game, did not play at our best and yet,
we still almost won the game. That is the encouraging fact we are
taking from game 2.

We are now back home in Houston and

It is with sadness that I talk about
Dikembe Mutombo's injury. When he leapt for a rebound in the game,
his knee was tangled under Greg Oden, and the stress of the
movement tore a tendon in his knee. Deke was in obvious pain, but
as much as his knee hurt, the pain of knowing that his had played
in his final NBA game hurt more. Deke is one of the great people to
put on an NBA uniform. His spirit is undeniable and he always
lights up a room as soon as he enters. It is my honor to have
called him a great teammate for the last 3 years and I am sad that
I will not see Deke wagging his finger after blocking yet another

Wow！

for game 2 of our series to get here. We played an absolutely great
game against the Blazers in game 1. I'd be lying if I said that I
expected the game to go as it did. I knew that if we played great
defense, then we would have a great shot at winning the game, but
no one expected a 27 point win. Wow.

We know that Portland will come out
much more aggressive in game 2 of the series. Their home arena, the
Rose Garden, is a tough place to play. They have fantastic fans who
are super loud. They are louder than the Jazz fans from last year
(which I thought was the loudest arena in the NBA). We expect the
Blazers to play a much better game.

The way the playoffs work is all about
adjustments. Whoever makes better adjustments in their gameplan
usually wins game 2. I am sure the Blazers will not allow Yao to
catch the ball uninterrupted in the post. They will either deny him
the ball or send double teams his way. It is up to us to respond to
this double team and make the Blazers pay for committing to
stopping Yao. When we do this well, we usually win, when we don't
respond well, we usually lose.

It is the final week of
the NBA regular season, can you believe it? I can't. The season has
flown by so quickly and I really can't believe the playoffs will
start in less than a week. As I write this, we have 2 games to go
against New Orleans and Dallas. I am asked everyday about who I
want to play in the playoffs. First of all, there are so many
different scenarios, I can't keep them all straight. Secondly, I
know that we are going to play a good team regardless, so why worry
about what team we are going to play? The only thing we can control
is our efforts against New Orleans and Dallas in these 2 last
games. If we win both, we will win the division championship, which
is amazing considering all of the injuries, trades, and lineup
shuffles that we have had this year. In the NBA, anytime you win 50
games, that is a great accomplishment and you should be proud. Do
you know how hard it is to win 50? It takes great consistency and
effort. To win a divisional championship would be even better. It's
something that I haven't done yet in my career.

Every playoff team in the
Western Conference offers advantages and challenges. I think the
Lakers are the best team obviously, but they have their weaknesses
too. I cannot put them into words here, because they might be
reading this, hahaha. After the Lakers, any of the teams could get
hot and win multiple playoff series. It is not like the Eastern
Conference which only has 3 great teams.

我在家一直在实践“3R”准则：Reduce(减少原料),
Re-use(重新利用),
Recycle(物品回收)。

Hello friends! This week the NBA is
celebrating Earth Week. I think this is great that the NBA is using
our platform to raise awareness about Earth Day and the issues that
are facing our environment. I like to think that I am an
environmentally conscience person. At the Battier household, we try
to practice the 3 "R's"......Reduce, Re-use, Recycle. We only have
one earth and we must respect it and treat it kindly. I challenge
you to reflect on your personal commitment to protecting our earth
and its resources. The beauty of having environmental awareness is
that it is simple and every small thing will help. If you just turn
off the lights when you leave a room, you will be saving our
atmosphere from the carbon dioxide that is released when we use
electricity. I always try to reuse cardboard boxes and other
containers to keep them out of landfills. I know I am only one
person, but if everyone just did a little to help preserve our
earth, the impact would be tremendous.

To commemorate earth week, the NBA is
allowing us to wear "green shoes." Although the Rockets do not have
green as one of their primary colors, I will be wearing special
Peak shoes that serve to raise awareness for earth week. My shoes
will be a combination of white, silver, and green. The green
symbolizes life, nature and health. The silver symbolizes
civilization, the mixing of earth and concrete. The white in the
shoes symbolizes purity and cleanness. The combination of all these
colors serves as a reminder to care for our planet and to help keep
the environment clean. There is also a really cool "31 recycling"
symbol on the back of the shoe that shows that I like to recycle
and that I am a friend of the earth!

So when you watch us play this week,
take a look at my shoes as well as everyone who wears "green shoes"
this week. Let it serve as a reminder that we must protect our
planet and take necessary steps to preserve it for future
generations.

I am sitting here in Utah, a day after
an improbable win against the San Antonio Spurs. San Antonio is one
of the most difficult places to win and I am really proud of our
team to show perseverance and fortitude in our win. We have had so
much malaise this year, from the injuries to key players on the
team, to the trades, to the bad losses to last place teams and to
the lack of chemistry. Considering all of the things that have
happened to our team, it's pretty amazing to look at the standings
today and see that we are in first place in the Southwest division
and in second place in the tough Western Conference.

I really can't explain it, other than

People ask me what team that I would

regardless. So we don't wasting time worrying about it.

On another note, this is a very
stressful week in the Battier household. My beloved Duke Blue
Devils are playing the Villanova Wildcats in the NCAA tournament on
Thursday. As you know, I went to Duke and won a national
championship in 2001, what you don't know is that my wife, Heidi,
attended Villanova University. There has been trash talking
already. Our son Zeke will be wearing his Duke shirt and Villanova
hat and socks. He feels very conflicted for a 10 month old. Many of
my wife's friends are talking trash as well and we have already
placed a few wagers on the game. It will be a tough game for Duke,
but it will be much tougher for me if they lose! So GO
DUKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We received some disturbing news this morning. After a great win
against New Orleans in New Orleans, we returned home late last
night. While our power forward Carl Landry was coming home from the
airport, his car was shot at by two armed men. Thankfully, Carl
only suffered a flesh wound in his calf and a dislocated finger.
The outcome of the shooting could have been much, much worse. I am
thankful and relieved that Carl has been released from the hospital
already.

Carl is one of the nicest people I know, he is just a good
person. It is senseless that someone would try to shoot him. Carl
was only trying to get something to eat after our plane ride. I
don't know all of the details yet, but it will be good to see
Carl.

People ask me if this brings a sense of perspective to me. I try
not to get caught up in our job as basketball players. Ultimately,
things like health, family, and friends are much more important
than the games that we win or lose. I don't need an episode like
this morning's situation to remind me of that. With that said
though, I will give my wife and my son an extra hug and kiss before
I go to the gym today. Now that's what's important to me.

Talk to you soon,
