Competition in the Chinese entertainment industry is extremely intense. Indeed, “the younger the better” might be the modus operandi1 for companies like the Emperor Entertainment Group (EEG), and the rising superstar, Isabella Leong, is at all representative.
She was in the right place, at the right moment, with the right attributes. She's tall (172cm), beautiful (wide forehead, large eyes and perfect complexion2) and talented. She's been called young Cecilia Cheung, in reference to the actresses shared profession and their mixed blood (Cheung's mother is half English half Chinese). “I am half Chinese, half Portuguese, and half English,” says the 18 year old starlet.
Starting her entertainment career as a teen model, Isabella Leong was spotted3 by EEG at the age of 12. Since then, Isabella has expanded into TV, music, and film. By age 16, she'd already released an EP① Isabella, and made several guest performances at the Hong Kong Hung Hom coliseum4. In 2005, she made her film debut in Law Chi-leung's② Bugs Me Not, for which she was nominated Best New Performer at the 42nd Golden Horse Awards and the 25th Hong Kong Film Awards. Later that same year, her sophomore movie, the Pang Brothers'③ psycho-thriller The Eye 10 was released, while she was in Macao shooting Isabella directed by Pang Ho Cheung④. She also played a supporting role in A Chinese Tall Story. Not bad for someone who at the time has yet to blow out 18 candles.
Isabella is Isabella Leong's breakthrough, making her a new international star in the Berlin Movie Festival. Leong's performance is surprisingly mature for a young and relatively inexperienced actress. At 17, she captures the essence of a rebellious and ingenuous5 girl. Leong didn't win the Best Actress Award, but the festival did provide plenty of exposure.
Despite all this, Leong appeared more concerned about an outbreak of acne6 than her chance to win the top award. In fact, she behaved as a typical teenager, joking that “I've never had a pimple in my life. Perhaps the festival has disrupted my hormones7.”
After that, Leong has received a number of offers, some of which may provide equally good roles. In the meantime, however, Leong has agreed to take on a rather daring role in Taiwanese filmmaker's Zhou Mei Ling's Tattoo. It is the story of a tattoo artist (Leong) and her relationship with another girl, played by the Taiwanese idol Rainie Yang.

梁洛施12岁时被英皇娱乐集团看中，最初以少年模特的身份迈入了娱乐圈。此后，她向影视唱三栖进军。16岁时，梁洛施就发行了一张EP专辑《伊莎贝拉》，在香港红石勘体育馆做过几次演唱会嘉宾。2005年，梁洛施首次“触电”，拍了罗志良导演的《虫不知》，并为此获得了第42届金马奖和第25届香港电影金像奖最佳新演员提名。同年晚些时候，她主演的第二部影片，彭氏兄弟导演的心理惊悚片《见鬼10》上映了，当时她在澳门拍摄彭浩翔导演的《伊莎贝拉》。她还在《情癜大圣》一片中演了一个配角。对于当时刚刚吹过18支生日蜡烛的梁洛施来说，这已经很不错了。
《伊莎贝拉》让梁洛施成为了柏林电影节上的国际新星，这是她的突破点。对一位年轻的演员来说，相对而言经验不足，但让人吃惊的是梁洛施的表演很成熟。17岁的她抓住了一个叛逆率真女孩的本质。梁洛施没有捧回影后桂冠，但电影节提供了大量暴光机会。

② 罗志良：香港著名导演、编剧。最早是刘镇伟执导的《东成西就》的B组副导演，后与尔冬升合作执导《新不了情》、《色情男女》等影片。2000年他独立执导的一部《枪王》令人感觉新意十足。此外，罗志良为《幻影特工》《星月童话》《星愿》等片做编剧。
③ 彭氏兄弟：孪生兄弟彭顺和彭发。本是著名电影剪接师的彭氏兄弟近年开始尝试导演工作，联合执导的《无声火》和《见鬼》系列开创了全新鬼片类型，在香港及东南亚地区获得了空前的票房和口碑。
④ 彭浩翔：香港新生代导演，曾写过畅销小说《全职杀手》，后被搬上银屏。导演处女作《买凶拍人》让他一鸣惊人，《大丈夫》是他的第二部剧情片，获得本届金马奖最佳导演、最佳编剧在内的4项提名。有人曾用“新一代的开山怪”来形容彭浩翔，以此来夸奖他对华语电影所做出的贡献。

I was on the train to Rohana, and then a girl got on. The couple seeing her off were probably her parents, they seemed very anxious about her safety, and the woman gave the girl detailed instructions as to where to keep her things, when not to lean out of windows, and how to avoid speaking to strangers.
As I had become blind by then, I could not tell what the girl looked like. “Are you going all the way to Dehra Dun?” I asked her as the train pulled out of the station.
I must have been sitting in a dark corner, because my voice startled her. She gave a little exclamation1, and said, “I didn't know anyone else was here.”
Well, it often happens that people with good eyesight fail to see what is right in front of them. They have too much to observe, I suppose.
“I didn't see you either at first,” I said. “But I heard you come in.” I wondered if I would be able to prevent her from discovering that I couldn't see. I thought it shouldn't be too difficult.
“I'm getting down at Saharanpur,” the girl said. “My aunt is meeting me there. Where are you going?”
“To Dehra Dun, and then to Mussoorie,” I replied.
“Oh, lucky you! I wish I were going to Mussoorie. I love the mountains. Especially in October.”
“Yes, this is the best time.” I said, calling on my memories when I could see. “The hills are covered with wild dahlias2, the sun is delicious, and at night you can sit in front of a log fire and drink a little brandy.”
She was silent. Then I made a mistake. “What is it like outside?” I asked.
She seemed to find nothing strange in the question. Had she noticed already that I could not see? But her next question removed my doubts. “Why don't you look out of the window?” she asked quite naturally.
I moved easily along the berth and felt for the window ledge. The window was open and I faced it, making a pretense of studying the landscape. “Have you noticed,” I ventured, “that the trees seem to be moving while we seem to be standing still?”
“That always happens,” she said.
I turned to face the girl, and for a while we sat in silence. “You have an interesting face,” I commented. I was becoming quite daring, but it was a safe remark, few girls can resist flattery3.
“You are very gallant4,” she said.
“We'll soon be at your station,” I said rather abruptly. As soon as she left the train, she would forget our brief encounter, but it would stay with me for the rest of the journey, and for some time after.
The engine's whistle shrieked5, the carriage wheels changed their sound and rhythm. The girl got up to collect her things. The train drew slowly into the station. Outside, a highpitched female voice that must have belonged to the girl's aunt. “Goodbye,” said the girl.
She was standing very close to me, so close that the perfume from her hair was tantalizing6. She moved away, and only the perfume still lingered where she had stood.
A man got into the compartment. Then the door banged shut, and the world was closed out again. I returned to my seat, staring into daylight that was darkness for me.
“She was an interesting girl,” I said. “Can you tell me— did she keep her hair long or short?” “I don't remember,” he replied, sounding puzzled. “It was her eyes I noticed, not her hair. She had such beautiful eyes, but they were of no use to her—she was completely blind. Didn't you notice?”

我坐在前往罗哈那的火车上，随后上来了一个女孩子。送她的那对夫妇可能是她的父母，他们似乎对她的安全格外担忧，那位夫人详细地交代她应注意的事项，诸如东西该放哪，什么时候不要把身子探出窗外，以及如何避免与陌生人说话。
由于那时我的眼睛已经失明了，所以我无法得知女孩的模样。“你是一直坐到德哈拉顿么？”火车驶出车站时我问她。
我肯定是一直坐在一个黑暗的角落里，因为我的声音吓她一跳。她发出一声轻呼，然后说：“我不知道这里有人。”
唉，视力好的人常常看不到眼前的东西，我想是他们要看的东西太多了吧。
“起先我也没看到你，”我说，“可我听到你进来了。”我寻思着能否别让她发现我是个盲人，我想这事儿应该不难。
“我在撒拉兰普下车，”女孩说，“我阿姨会在那里接我。你是去哪？”
“德哈拉顿，接着去穆所里。”我回答道。
“哦，你真幸运！我真希望我到的也是穆所里，我喜欢那里的山，尤其是在十月份。”
“是啊，这可是个黄金时间。”我边说边搜寻失明前（关于穆所里）的记忆。“满山遍野的野生大丽花，阳光明媚，夜晚你可以坐在篝火前小酌白兰地。”
她默不做声。这时我犯了个错。“外面看起来怎么样？”我问。
她似乎没听出我的问题有什么不对，她已经发现我是失明的了？但是她的下一个问题打消了我的疑虑。“你何不自己看下窗外？”她极其自然地问。
我毫不费力地沿着座位摸索到了窗沿，窗户是开着的。我对着窗户，假装在欣赏风景。“你注意到了么？”我斗胆问道，“树似乎在移动，而我们仿佛还待在原地。”
“通常都是这样的。”她说。
我转过头来面对着女孩，两人沉默了一阵子。“你的脸很有个性，”我评论道，胆子是越来越大了，不过这句评论很安全，没有女孩子抗拒得了奉承的。
“你真会恭维人。”她说。
“你马上要到站了。”我冷不丁地说。她一下火车就会忘了我们短暂的邂逅，可这次邂逅会陪伴着我直到终点和旅行结束后的一段时间。
火车鸣响了汽笛，车轮改变了声音和节奏。女孩站起来开始收拾东西了。火车缓缓进站。外面一个女人的高嗓音传了过来，那一定是她的阿姨。“再见，”女孩说。
她站得离我很近，头发上的香气撩人心魄。她走了，只有那一股香味还缭绕在她待过的地方。
一个男子进了包厢，然后门重重地关上了，世界再次被隔开。我回到座位上，盯着对我来说是一片黑暗的白昼。
“她真有意思，”我说，“你能不能告诉我，她的头发是长还是短？”“我不记得了，”他答道，声音听起来很困惑，“我注意的是她的眼睛，而不是头发。她有一双很美丽的眼，可是对她却毫无用处——她什么也看不见。难道你没注意到么？”

Here it is your big week, a time to celebrate all you've achieved, and we're giving your parents a chance to point to the front page of the paper and say, “Hey, did you see this? Greg Smith graduated from high school when he was 10; from college, cum laude1, by 13. And last weekend, he got a master's degree in mathematics from the University of Virginia. At age 16.”

I feel your pain. I was humbled2 just reading about Greg's degrees. And then I checked out his bio3 and saw these:

Child Prodigy4

Greg Smith, a child prodigy whose IQ reportedly5 tests “off the bell curve,” was memorizing and reciting books at 14 months, adding numbers at 18 months and taking in the information presented by his parents and earliest teachers like a super computer. It only took him one year, for example, to advance from second to eighth grade.

Smith remains committed to making his study his priority. He said he has a strong interest in political science and international relations, and that he expects to complete several doctoral degrees. “I am never satisfied with how much I've learned,”he said. “I always want to learn more and to understand our world.”

Social Activist6

But “genius”is only one half of the Greg Smith story. When not voraciously7 learning, this young man travels the globe as a peace and children's rights activist.

He admitted that he is also bothered when people judge other people because of their age. But he also sees such judgments as an opportunity “to prove them wrong.” That optimistic spirit has led Smith to organize aid projects for East Timor orphans and the youth in Brazil, to help Rwanda build its first public library, and to launch a $350,000 campaign to build a “peace school”in Kenya. He believes that, with joint formal education, these children would have the knowledge necessary to come up with innovative ideas for how to live and coexist8 peacefully.

Over the years, Smith has met with Bill Clinton and former president of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev, plus Nobel Peace Laureates9, to talk about his plans and to learn about “how they've dealt with difficult situations.” For these efforts, Smith has been nominated four times for a Nobel Peace Prize.

“In my heart, I hope for so many things to happen,” Smith said. “But realistically10, I know I can only do so much11. So I try to reach out to other people and encourage them to take part. One drop doesn't make an ocean, but with enough drops, you can begin to make a change.”

Various Hobbies

Smith will also find some time just to be a teen: shooting hoops on the basketball court behind his house (he loves sports, especially the Philadelphia Eagles football team and NASCAR car racing) and listening to music—anything from the less-well-known Afro-Celt Sound System to the hugely popular Irish rock band U2. The lead singer of U2 is a peace activist named Bono and Smith would love to meet him one day.

If your parents point this out to you, you could remind them that youthful accomplishments aren't necessarily the key to the White House. If your parents get too carried away with “Greg this” and “Greg that,” I have the perfect response, a question that I believe will shut them up12. Ask them what they did when they were 16. Haha…

NASCAR：National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing，美国国家赛车联合会，也译“纳斯卡”。NASCAR赛车运动起源于美国南部，20世纪三四十年代，私酒贩子常常驾驶飞车在乡间小路上飞驰，以躲避联邦税务稽查员的追捕。随着这种猫捉老鼠的游戏不断升级，私酒贩子们想方设法地提高汽车马力、改造汽车结构以使车子更好地控制，更容易地逃脱联邦政府的追捕。私酒贩子们为了比较谁的车跑得最快、谁的车技最好，就开始了他们的赛车比赛。经过半个世纪的发展，NASCAR已经成为全球最著名的一项赛车运动，在美国更是具有无可替代的地位。
