<p>&nbsp;</P>
<p><br />
Andy：Mimi, you look so sad those days.<br />
Mimi: I feel unhappy cos of so many disasters happened in China
this year, besides my boyfriend and I broke up.<br />
<br />
Andy: To be tough, live like a soldier.<br />
<br />
Bobo：I think as a lady like you, it's natural to be weak, but I
would like to recommend a sitcom called " Lady, don't cry".<br />
Mimi: What's that in Chinese?<br />
Bobo: It's called "女人不哭”，the story is about how a strong woman not
only manage her hotel but manage her life as well,
<br />
Mimi：I will download later, <br />
Andy: I also want to introduce a song for you, Mimi, after learning
that song, I hope you could be stronger, and carry on.<br />
Mimi: Is it beautiful?<br />
Andy: Yes, very beautiful indeed. I myself especially love its
melody, and this is a famous song from that Swedish band ABBA, a
top pop and dance group.<br />
Bobo: I remember the band leaves lots of great songs after their 10
years career and won lots of awards.<br />
<br />
Andy: Yes. It covered from one of their great songs " Gimme, gimme,
gimme"<br />
Bobo: Chinese lyrics is quite different from original
one.&nbsp;<br />
Andy: You bet. In fact, many artists have developed their songs,
and the band ranked top during late 1970s, I used to have 3 CDs of
their songs, but the worst thing is I lent to Bobo, and they never
come back again.<br />
<br />
Mimi: I want to learn that song, wish I could feel better and
happier. By the way, you guys didn't tell me the name of the
song.<br />
Andy: It's called Chiquitita.
Chiquitita<br />
<p>1.<br />
Chiquitita, tell me what's wrong<br />
You're enchained by your own sorrow<br />
In your eyes there is no hope for tomorrow<br />
How I hate to see you like this<br />
There is no way you can deny it<br />
I can see that you're so sad, so quiet<br />
* what's wrong: what's matter, 怎么了？<br />
* be enchained by: 被束缚。enchain：en加chain（链条）组成。<br />
* sorrow: grieving, 悲伤。是一个名词。<br />
* hate to see: 不喜欢看到。有时候hate不一定是憎恨。比如: I hate to say good bye to
you. <br />
* you can deny it: 作定语修饰way。 I like the way you
smile.
<br />
Bobo: I don't like way Andy teaches.<br />
<br />
* quiet:&nbsp; calm, peaceful,
<p>&nbsp;</P>
<p>2.<br />
Chiquitita, tell me the truth<br />
I'm a shoulder you can cry on<br />
Your best friend, I'm the one you must rely on<br />
You were always sure of yourself<br />
Now I see you've broken a feather<br />
I hope we can patch it up together<br />
* cry on：这里on用得非常好。
<br />
* rely on: 依靠<br />
* be sure of oneself: 自信。<br />
* have broken: 现在完成时态。break, broke, broken, 每天像唱rap一样唱不规则动词。<br />
* feather: 羽毛。在举重运动中是轻量级，也叫羽量级。<br />
<br />
* patch up: 修补。 <br />
Andy：How do you like patches on my blue jeans, mimi?<br />
Mimi: Andy, you just look like a beggar.</P>
<p>&nbsp;</P>

<strong>副歌</STRONG><br />
Chiquitita, you and I know<br />
How the heartaches come and they go<br />
And the scars they're leavin'<br />
You'll be dancin' once again<br />
and the pain will end<br />
You will have no time for grievin'<br />
Chiquitita, you and I cry<br />
But the sun is still in the sky and shining above you<br />
Let me hear you sing once more like you did before<br />
Sing a new song, Chiquitita<br />
Try once more like you did before<br />
Sing a new song, Chiquitita<br />
* heartache: 心痛。-ache: 表示疼痛， 如：toothache, stomachache.<br />
* scar: 伤疤。<br />
* pain: 痛苦，无论精神活着肉体痛苦，我们都可以用pain这个词。<br />
* grieve: 悲痛, 伤心, 忧伤。 用得比较多的还有 grieve for: grieve over, 哀悼。<br />
* end: 这里做动词，意思“结束”。<br />
* shine above: 在上面照耀</P>
<p><br />
3.<br />
So the walls came tumblin' down<br />
And your love's a blown out candle<br />
All is gone and it seems too hard to handle<br />
Chiquitita, tell me the truth<br />
There is no way you can deny it<br />
I see that you're so sad, so quiet<br />
* tumble down：倒下，即将倒下<br />
* blow out: 熄灭<br />
* too hard to handle: 太难了，不能对付</P>

<p>&nbsp;</P>
<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;
<p>
Progress
is the activity of today and the assurance of
<br/>

&nbsp;&nbsp;
<p><br/>
&#9679;课文<br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp; Members of the Harvard Family
Here in the Yard is one of the great collections of intellectual
talent in the world. For what purpose？ There is no question that
the faculty, the alumni, the students, and the benefactors of
Harvard have used their power to improve the lives of people here
and around the world. But can we do more？ Can Harvard dedicate
its intellect to improving the lives of people who will never even
hear its name？<br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp;

* there is no question: 毋庸置疑, 毫无疑问.<br/>
* faculty: 大学里的教职员工总称.<br/>
* alumni: 毕业生.<br/>
* benefactor: 资助者<br/>
* dedicate: 献出, 贡献. 名词是dedication. dedicate
<p><br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp; Let me make a request of the
deans and the professors - the intellectual leaders here at
Harvard. As you hire new faculty, award tenure, review curriculum,
and determine degree requirements, please ask yourselves: Should
our best minds be more dedicated to solving our biggest problems?
Should Harvard encourage its faculty to take on the world's worst
inequities? Should Harvard students know about the depth of global
poverty, the prevalence of world hunger, the scarcity of clean
water, the girls kept out of school, the children who die from
diseases we can cure? Should the world's most privileged learn
about the lives of the world's least privileged? These are not
rhetorical questions - you will answer with your policies.<br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp;
<br/>

* request: 请求, 动词和名词都可以.<br/>
* dean: 校长, 院长<br/>
* intellectual leaders: 智力精英<br/>
* hire: 雇用.<br/>
* tenure: 占有, 这里指的是终身职位.<br/>
* curriculum: 课程,
* degree requirements: 学位要求<br/>
* best minds: 最优秀人才<br/>
* be dedicated to: 贡献于<br/>
* take on:
* global poverty: 世界性的贫困<br/>
* prevalence: 流行， 如：prevalence
* scarcity: shortage,
<br/>

* clean water: 清洁水。<br/>
* keep out of: 排除之外，置身于外<br/>
* the most privileged:
<br/>
波波：I belong to the least privileged.<br/>
安迪：So do I.<br/>
* rhetorical:

<p><br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp; My mother, who was filled with
pride the day I was admitted here - never stopped pressing me to do
more for others. A few days before I was married, she hosted a
bridal event, at which she read aloud a letter about marriage that
she had written to Melinda. My mother was very ill with cancer at
the time, but she saw one more opportunity to deliver her message,
and at the close of the letter she said: From those to whom much is
given, much is expected.<br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp;
&rdquo;<br/>

* be filled with pride: 引以为豪，充满自豪<br/>
* be admitted: 被录取<br/>
* press sb.to do sth: force sb.to do sth,
* bridal event:
event？<br/>
* write to: 写信.
sb.<br/>
* be ill with + disease: 因为生...而病得不轻<br/>
* deliver: 传达，传播，送货。再学一个：deliver a
<br/>
* at the close of the letter: 在信的结尾</P>
<p><br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp; When you consider what those
of us here in this Yard have been given - in talent, privilege, and
opportunity - there is almost no limit to what the world has a
right to expect from us.<br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp;
<br/>

* consider: to think carefully about，仔细考虑<br/>
* no limit: 无限制<br/>
* expect from sb.: 从某人处期待</P>
<p>&nbsp;</P>
<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; In line with the promise of
this age, I want to exhort each of the graduates here to take on an
issue - a complex problem, a deep inequity, and become a specialist
on it. If you make it the focus of your career, that would be
phenomenal. But you don't have to do that to make an impact. For a
few hours every week, you can use the growing power of the Internet
to get</P>
<p>informed, find others with the same interests, see the barriers,
and find ways to cut through them.<br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp;
<br/>

* in line with: 符合，配合<br/>
* exhort: 力劝<br/>
* take on: 接纳<br/>
* specialist: an expert in one field. 专家<br/>
* focus: 焦点，
<br/>
* phenomenal: 现象的，
<br/>
* make an impact: 作出影响<br/>
* to get informed: to get information, 得到信息<br/>
* with the same interests: 有同样爱好<br/>
* barrier: 障碍，困难<br/>
* cut through: 原意抄近路，这里指的是解决</P>
<p><br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp; Don't let complexity stop you.
Be activists. Take on big inequities. I feel sure it will be one of
the great experiences of your lives.<br/>
&nbsp;

<p><br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp; You graduates are coming of
age in an amazing time. As you leave Harvard, you have technology
that members of my class never had. You have awareness of global
inequity, which we did not have. And with that awareness, you
likely also have an informed conscience that will torment you if
you abandon these people whose lives you could change with modest
effort. You have more than we had; you must start sooner, and carry
on longer.<br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp; Knowing what you know, how
could you not?<br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp;
<br/>

&nbsp;&nbsp;
<br/>

* amazing time: 伟大时代<br/>
* awareness of: 意识到<br/>
* informed conscience: 良心谴责<br/>
* torment: physical pain or mental anguish，折磨<br/>
* abandon: 抛弃，遗弃。
<br/>
* modest effort: 少许的努力<br/>
* carry on: 坚持下去</P>
<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; And I hope you will come
back here to Harvard 30 years from now and reflect on what you have
done with your talent and your energy. I hope you will judge
yourselves not on your professional accomplishments alone, but also
on how well you have addressed the world's deepest inequities ...
on how well you treated people a world away who have nothing in
common with you but their humanity.<br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp; Good luck.<br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp;

<br/>
* reflect on: 思考，反省<br/>
* professional accomplishments: 专业成就<br/>
* address: 地址，演讲， 这里指的是：To direct the
efforts or attention of，致力于<br/>
* a world away: 相隔千山万水。<br/>
* humanity:
human
being：人类。
<p>&nbsp;</P>
1. In formal education, a curriculum (plural curricula) is the set
of courses, and their content, offered at a school or
university.<br/>
2. We should always ask ourselves: What have I accomplished so far?
What do I still want to accomplish?<br/>
3. In the coming decades, we'll have astonishing new abilities:
better software, better diagnosis for illness, better cures, better
education, better opportunities and more brilliant minds coming up
with ideas that solve tough problems.&nbsp;<br/>
4. The great advances in the world have often aggravated the
inequities in the world. The least needy see the most improvement,
and the most needy get the least -- in particular the billion
people who live on less than a dollar a day.<br/>
5. If we can spend the early decades of the 21st century finding
approaches that meet the needs of the poor in ways that generate
profits and recognition for business, we will have found a
sustainable way to reduce poverty in the world.</P>

<br/>

&nbsp;&nbsp; I remember going to the World
Economic Forum [in Davos] some years back and sitting on a global
health panel that was discussing ways to save millions of lives.
Millions! Think of the thrill if you can save just one person's
life - then multiply that by millions. ... Yet this was the most
boring panel I've ever been on - ever. So boring that even I
couldn't stand it.<br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp;
<br/>

* World Economic Forum:
<br/>

* some years back: 几年以前。<br/>
* panel: 1. 面板。如QQ panel（QQ 面板）。2.
* thrill: 恐怖, 这里翻成"激动".<br/>
* multiply: by, time, 乘以.<br/>
* stand: 这里意思"承受".</FONT></P>

<p><font STYLE="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffffff" FACE="宋体">&nbsp;&nbsp; What made that
experience especially striking was that I had just come from an
event where we were introducing version 13 of some piece of
software, and we had people jumping and shouting with excitement. I
love getting people excited about software - but why can't we
generate even more excitement for saving lives? You can't get
people excited unless you can help them see and feel the impact.
The way to do that - is a complex question.<br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp;
&nbsp;</FONT></P>

<p>&nbsp;</P>
<p><font STYLE="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffffff" FACE="宋体">&nbsp;&nbsp; Still, I'm
optimistic. Yes, inequity has been with us forever, but the new
tools we have to cut through complexity have not been with us
forever. They are new - they can help us make the most of our
caring - and that's why the future can be different from the past.
The defining and ongoing innovations of this age - biotechnology,
the personal computer, and the Internet - give us a chance we've
never had before to end extreme poverty and end death from
preventable disease.<br/>

<br/>

<p><font STYLE="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffffff" FACE="宋体">&nbsp;&nbsp; Sixty years ago,
George Marshall came to this commencement and he announced a plan
to assist the nations of postwar Europe. He said: "I think one
difficulty is that the problem is one of such enormous complexity
that the very mass of facts presented to the public by press and
radio make it exceedingly difficult for the man in the street to
reach a clear appraisement of the situation. It is virtually
impossible at this distance to grasp at all the real significance
of the situation." Thirty years after Marshall made his address, as
my class graduated without me, technology was emerging that would
make the world smaller, more open, more visible, less
distant.<br/>

六十年前，乔治&middot;马歇尔也是在这个地方的毕业典礼上，宣布了一个计划，帮助那些欧洲国家的战后建设。他说：&ldquo;我认为，困难的一点是这个问题太复杂，报纸和电台向公众源源不断地提供各种事实，使得大街上的普通人极端难于清晰地判断形势。事实上，经过层层传播，想要真正地把握形势，是根本不可能的。&rdquo;
<br/>

<p><font STYLE="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffffff" FACE="宋体">&nbsp;&nbsp; The emergence of

has transformed opportunities for learning and communicating. The

<br/>

<p><font STYLE="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffffff" FACE="宋体">&nbsp;&nbsp; At the same time, for
every person in the world who has access to this technology, five
people don't. That means many creative minds are left out of this
discussion -- smart people with practical intelligence and relevant
experience who don't have the technology to hone their talents or
contribute their ideas to the world. We need as many people as
possible to gain access to this technology, because these advances
are triggering a revolution in what human beings can do for one
another. They are making it possible not just for national
governments, but for universities, corporations, small
organizations, and even individuals to see problems, see
approaches, and measure the impact of their efforts to address the
hunger, poverty, and desperation George Marshall spoke of 60 years
ago.<br/>

<br/>

●课文<br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp; Now this task is open-ended.
It can never be finished. But a conscious effort to answer this
challenge can change the world. I am optimistic that we can do
this, but I talk to skeptics who claim there is no hope. They say:
"Inequity has been with us since the beginning, and will be with us
till the end – because people just … don't … care." I completely
disagree. I believe we have more caring than we know what to do
with.<br/>
&nbsp;
<br/>

* task: mission, 任务.<br/>
* open-ended: 无止境的,无限制的<br/>
* can never: 决不. 说can never的时候口气坚决.<br/>
* conscious effort: 有意识的努力. 我们还要记住: consciousness:
意识. unconsciousness: 无意识. stream of consciousness:
意识流.<br/>
* answer this challenge: 回应这个挑战. a conscious effort to answer
this challenge: 整个做subject(主语).<br/>
* since the beginning: 从最初. 有时候也可以: since the very
beginning.<br/>
* till the end: 到最后.<br/>
* completely: totally, utterly, absolutely, 彻底地,完全地.<br/>
* disagree: do not agree, 不同意.<br/>
* we have more caring than we know what to do with:
<p>&nbsp;</P>
<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; All of us here in this
Yard, at one time or another, have seen human tragedies that broke
our hearts, and yet we did nothing – not because we didn't care,
but because we didn't know what to do. If we had known how to help,
we would have acted. The barrier to change is not too little
caring; it is too much complexity. To turn caring into action, we
need to see a problem, see a solution, and see the impact. But
complexity blocks all three steps.<br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp;

* at one time or another: 这样那样的时刻.
* that break our hearts: 做attribute(定语)<br/>
* If we had known how to help, we would have acted.
* barrier: 障碍<br/>
* too little caring: 漠不关心<br/>
* complexity: 复杂. 这是一个名词, 它的形容词是: complex.<br/>
* turn...into: 把...转化成<br/>
* solution: 解决方案.<br/>
* block: 阻碍</P>
<p>&nbsp;<br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp; Even with the advent of the
Internet and 24-hour news, it is still a complex enterprise to get
people to truly see the problems. When an airplane crashes,
officials immediately call a press conference. They promise to
investigate, determine the cause, and prevent similar crashes in
the future. But if the officials were brutally honest, they would
say: "Of all the people in the world who died today from
preventable causes, one half of one percent of them were on this
plane. We're determined to do everything possible to solve the
problem that took the lives of the one half of one percent."
The&nbsp; problem is not just</P>
<p>the plane crash, but the millions of preventable deaths.<br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp;
<br/>

* advent: The coming or arrival, especially of something extremely
* airplane crash: 飞机失事<br/>
* press conference: 新闻发布会<br/>
* investigate: 调查. 名词是investigation.<br/>
* determine: 决定. 这里"找出"的意思.<br/>
* cause: 原因.<br/>
* prevent: 防止, 预防<br/>
* similar: 相似的, 类似的<br/>
* brutally: 残酷地, 但是这里的意思: very, 非常<br/>
* preventable cause: 可以预防的灾难<br/>
* one half: 二分之一<br/>
* be determined to do: 决定做某事<br/>
* take life: 夺取生命, 造成死亡<br/></P>
&nbsp;</DIV>
<div>
<p><font STYLE="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffffff" FACE="宋体">&nbsp;&nbsp; We don't read much
about these deaths. The media covers what's new – and millions of
people dying is nothing new. So it stays in the background, where
it's easier to ignore. But even when we do see it or read about it,
it's difficult to keep our eyes on the problem. It's difficult to
look at suffering if the situation is so complex that we don't know
how to help. And so we look away.<br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp;
<br/>

* cover: 覆盖. 这里报道的意思.<br/>
* background: 背景, 这里指的是不重要的地方.<br/>
* ignore: 忽视<br/>
* do see it: do这里强调<br/>
* keep one's eyes on: 注视, 关注.<br/>
* suffering: 痛苦<br/>
* look away: 背转脸去</FONT></P>
<p><font STYLE="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffffff" FACE="宋体"><br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp; If we can really see a
problem, which is the first step, we come to the second step:
cutting through the complexity to find a solution. Finding
solutions is essential if we want to make the most of our caring.
If we have clear and proven answers anytime an organization or
individual asks "How can I help?," then we can get action – and we
can make sure that none of the caring in the world is wasted. But
complexity makes it hard to mark a path of action for everyone who
cares — and that makes it hard for their caring to matter. Cutting
through complexity to find a solution runs through four predictable
stages: determine a goal, find the highest-impact approach, deliver
the technology ideal for that approach, and in the meantime, use
the best application technology&nbsp; that you already
have — whether it’s something sophisticated, like a new drug, or
something simpler, like a bednet.<br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp;
<br/>

* cut through: 抄近路<br/>
* essential: necessary, 必要的<br/>
* proven answers: 可靠的答案<br/>
* organization: 组织<br/>
* individual: 个人<br/>
* get action: 采取行动<br/>
* make sure: 确信<br/>
* mark a path of action: 找到有效的行动方法<br/>
* to matter: to be efficient,有效, 产生实际效果<br/>
* run through: 穿过, 刺, 戳, 贯穿<br/>
* predictable: 可预言的. four predictable stages:
* high-impact: 高效<br/>
* approach: 方法<br/>
* ideal technology: 最佳技术<br/>
* in the meantime: at same time, 同时<br/>
* application: 应用. 它的动词是apply<br/>
* sophisticated: 复杂的<br/>
* bednet: mosquito net, 蚊帐</FONT></P>
<p>&nbsp;</P>
<p><font STYLE="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffffff" FACE="宋体"><br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp; The AIDS epidemic offers an
example. The broad goal, of course, is to end the disease. The
highest-leverage approach is prevention. The ideal technology would
be a vaccine that gives lifetime immunity with a single dose. So
governments, drug companies, and foundations are funding vaccine
research. But their work is likely to take more than a decade, so
in the meantime, we have to work with what we have in hand – and
the best prevention approach we have now is getting people to avoid
risky behavior.<br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp;
<br/>

* AIDS epidemic: 艾滋流行病<br/>
* broad goal: 主要目标<br/>
* prevention: 预防<br/>
* vaccine: 疫苗<br/>
* lifetime immunity: 终生免疫<br/>
* single dose: 一次注射, 一剂<br/>
* foundation: 基金会<br/>
* fund: 这里做动词,意思资助<br/>
* vaccine research: 疫苗研究<br/>
* be likely to: 可能<br/>
* a decade: 十年<br/>
* in hand: 现有的<br/>
* avoid risky behavior: 避免危险行为</FONT></P>
<p>&nbsp;</P>
<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; Pursuing that goal starts
the four-step cycle again. This is the pattern. The crucial thing
is to never stop thinking and working – and never do what we did
with malaria and tuberculosis in the 20th century – which is to
surrender to complexity and quit. The final step – after seeing
the problem and finding an approach – is to measure the impact of
your work and share that successes and failures so that others can
learn from your efforts.<br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp;
<br/>

* pursue goal: 追求目标<br/>
* cycle: 循环<br/>
* pattern: 样式,图案, 这里模式.<br/>
* crucial: vital, important, 至关重要的<br/>
* tuberculosis: 肺结核,简称TB.<br/>
* surrender to: 向...投降.<br/>
* measure the impact: 评估结果</P>
<p>&nbsp;</P>
<p><font STYLE="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffffff" FACE="宋体">&nbsp;&nbsp; You have to have the
statistics, of course. You have to be able to show,for example,that
a program is vaccinating millions more children. You have to be
able to show, for example,a decline in the number of children dying
from these diseases. This is essential not just to improve the
program, but also to help draw more investment from business and
government. But if you want to inspire people to participate, you
have to show more than numbers; you have to convey the human impact
of the work – so people can feel what saving a life means to the
families affected.<br/>
&nbsp;

reports(统计报告), statistical research(统计研究), statistical
result(统计结果)<br/>
* vaccinate: 接种<br/>
* decline: 下降<br/>
* draw more investment: 吸收更多投资<br/>
* participate: take part in, 参与<br/>
* convey: 传达<br/>
* human impact: 人性因素<br/>
* save a life: 拯救一条生命<br/>

(Tom

<br/>

Bobo and Jingjing, what song do you guys recommend to me
today?<br/>
波波：Lately I have downloaded many rock songs, I simply love
rock'n'roll.<br/>
I don't like rock much, I feel like I only love some pop
songs with awesome melody.<br/>
波波：Oh, come on, Jingjing, I just can't stand all those
sentimental songs. Andy, teach us some U2 songs, ok?<br/>
No，most of their songs are about politics which I don't
like, besides, I don't think their songs are suitable for us to
learn and sing.<br/>
I am with Jingjing, in my opinion, I would love to teach some
songs like you guys may feel easy to follow.<br/>
波波：Seems you guys don't know much about rock, Andy, I think we
have generation gap.<br/>
I love songs simple and plain, and then I can learn to
sing.<br/>
Everybody got their own taste, but I still prefer some
classics.<br/>
波波：Andy, I think it's time for you to change ideas, today young
people even love heavy rock. I really suggest you guys may go to
some gigs and feel</P>
<p>exciting live performance.<br/>
I would love to go if you buy us tickets.<br/>
波波：ALl I earned have been paid for internet.<br/>
Andy, what song are we going to learn today?<br/>
How about "Whole Again" by Atomic Kitten?<br/>
That's what I wanted.<br/>
波波：I never heard of the band before.<br/>
The band is an English girl group from Liverpool, Many of
their singles and albums entered the Top 40 charts worldwide such
as "Right Now," "Whole</P>
<p>Again," "Eternal Flame," "The Tide Is High," and "Ladies Night."
Shall we start our class?</P>

Bill
</FONT></P>

might be here today.<br/>

* take a look back: 回顾过去<br/>
* regret: 遗憾, 后悔.<br/>
* aware of: 意识到<br/>
* awful inequity: 极大的不平等<br/>
* appalling: frightful,可怕的<br/>
* disparity: 不平等<br/>
* condemn: 宣判,这里的意思是"导致".<br/>
* lives of despair: 绝望的生活<br/>
* economics: 经济学<br/>
* politics: 政治学<br/>
* exposure: 曝光, 这里指的是科学新发现<br/>
* humanity: 人类<br/>
* be applied to: 应用在<br/>
* reduce inequity: 减少不平等</FONT></P>

FONT></DIV>

<P><FONT STYLE="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffffff" FACE="宋体">●课文<br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp; If you become a doctor of
philosophy in English or history or anthropology or political
science or languages or-worst of all-in philosophy,you run the risk
of becoming overeducated for our national demands.Not for our
needs,mind you,but for our demands.<br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp; Thousands of Ph.D.s are
selling shoes,driving cars,waiting on table,and endlessly filling
out applications month after month.They may also take a job in some
high school or backwater college that pays much less than the
janitor earns.<br/>
&nbsp;&nbsp; You can equate the level of
income with the level of education only so far.Far enough,that
is,to make you useful to the gross national product,but not so far
that nobody can turn much of a profit on you.</FONT></P>
<P>&nbsp;</P>
<P><FONT STYLE="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffffff" FACE="宋体">●解释<br/>
* doctor of philosophy in: 在..
* history: 历史, 形容词是historic, 顺便把地理也记住;
geography<br/>
(Saul
* worst of all: 最糟糕的是<br/>
* run risk: 承担风险. run是一个很重要的动词, 经常在4级考到.<br/>
* overeducated: 拆开来就是over+educated, 意思是受教育过多<br/>
* national demands: 国家需求<br/>
* demand and need:&nbsp; 这2个词是同义词,
* mind you: 口语里经常使用, 意思: 我要告诉你, 提醒你.<br/>
* thousands of : 成千上万. hundreds of: 成百上千.&nbsp;
* waiting on table: 指的是做waiter,boy,&nbsp; waitress
or bar attendant 之类的工作<br/>
* fill out: 填表, 在英国也用fill in,
不能翻成下流大学哦. heihei.&nbsp;
* much less than: 少的多, 如: I made much less money than I used
to.
* earn: make money. means to gain especially for the performance of
service, labor, or work etc.<br/>
* level of income: 收入水平, level of education: 教育水平<br/>
* You can equate the level of income with the level of education
only so far.Far enough,that is,to make you useful to the gross
national product,but not so far that nobody can turn much of a
profit on you.
<P>&nbsp;</P>
1. I graduated from a backwater college last year and I make about
2500 dollar every month.<br/>
2. The mall has become the number one hang-out place for
teenagers.<br/>
3. Rock stars have such bad reputations that they could never get a
real job if they had to.<br/>
4. If you use your mobile phone when you drive, it is safer to use
a head set.<br/>
5. Li Yinhe李银河 has a PhD degree in Sociology from Pittsburg
University in the United States and a post-PhD degree in Sociology
from Beijing University. She was once listed as one of China's 50
Most Influential People by Asian Weekly. Summarizing her research
in the past decade, Li says that a sexual revolution is silently
going on in China.</FONT></P>
