April Showers Bring May Flowers

From the golden-tipped fields of mid-west
America to the ancient kingdoms of verdant Palestine, there is a
happy truth to be shared with all who would take heed. In more
recent times, this truth has been expressed as: April showers bring
May flowers. This is a truth that promises light bursting from
darkness, strength born from weakness and, if one dares to believe,
life emerging from death.

Farmers all over the world know the importance and
immutability of the seasons. They know that there is a season to
plant and a season to harvest; everything must be done in its own
time. Although the rain pours down with the utmost relentlessness,
ceasing all outdoor activities, the man of the field lifts his face
to the heavens and smiles. Despite the inconvenience, he knows that
the rain provides the nourishment his crops need to grow and
flourish. The torrential rains in the month of April, give rise to
the glorious flowers in the month of May.

But this ancient truth applies to more than the crops of the
fields; it is an invaluable message of hope to all who experience
tragedy in life. A dashed relationship with one can open up the
door to a brand new friendship with another. A lost job here can
provide the opportunity for a better job there. A broken dream can
become the foundation of a wonderful future. Everything has its
place.

Remember this: overwhelming darkness may endure for a night,
but it will never overcome the radiant light of the morning. When
you are in a season of sorrow, hang in there, because a season of
joy may be just around the corner…

　　verdant adj.

　　promise v. 允诺

　　burst v. 迸发

　　emerge v. 萌发

　　utmost adj. 极度的

　　cease v. 停止

　　inconvenience n.

　　provide v. 提供

　　apply v. 适用

　　invaluable adj. 无价的

　　endure v. 持续

Suppose someone gave you a pen - a
sealed, solid-colored pen. You couldn't see how much ink it had. It
might run dry after the first few tentative words or last just long

Actually, no rule of the game states you
must do anything. Instead of picking up and using the pen, you
could leave it on a shelf or in a drawer where it will dry up,

How would you play the game? Would you plan and plan before you
ever wrote a word? Would your plans be so extensive that you never
even got to the writing? Or would you take the pen in hand, plunge
right in and just do it, struggling to keep up with the twists and
turns of the torrents of words that take you where they take you?
Would you write cautiously and carefully, as if the pen might run
dry the next moment, or would you pretend to believe that the pen
will write forever and proceed accordingly?

Hatred? Fun? Misery? Life? Death? Nothing? Or Everything? Would you
write to please just yourself, or others, or yourself by writing
for others? Would your strokes be tremblingly timid or brilliantly
bold? Fancy with a flourish or plain? Would you even write? Once
you have the pen, no rule says you have to write. Would you sketch?
Scribble? Doodle or draw? Would you stay in or on the lines, or see
no lines at all, even if they were there? Or are they? There's a
lot to think about here, isn't there?

Tonight, Let Me Think
of You in Silence - Translated by Rhapsodia
（Second Edition）

Tonight, parking myself in a
corner, I think of you in silence
Wondering what you are doing, wondering if you are thinking of me
Wondering if my figure passes your eyes when you gaze in distance
Wondering, if you can see me waiting at the gate of your fancy
dream
I just love to sit here thinking of you in silence
Though I am not sure if the other side can really sense this
thinking occurrence
If you feel frequent, weird touches at your heart
Do you know it is me who’s thinking of you in silence from
distance?
Just think of you like this quietly, calling your name at the
bottom of my heart
I am indeed longing for voicing your name out aloud in this calm
sky of night
Despite that, the dark night won’t send my wish far as I know
quite
I still believe, you are able to hear me, no matter how far you
are
Let me think of you like this, in this tame night
For thinking of you, the night appears charming though with blue in
sight

I am thinking of you
Of lighting up an orange lamp, quietly waiting for your return from
exhaustion back to our place
Of making a cup of warm fragrant tea, gently dispelling the
weariness on your face
Of my supple and slim fingers, easing away the wrinkles at your
eyes
Of my tender and sweet murmuring, soothing your disturbed soul
twice
Afterwards, I would again gaze at you in silence …
I pray, I pray for the stillness and eternity of this very
moment
This way of thinking is pleasant
Leaving me with mild heartache and sweet happiness.
Your name slips into my thought and I’m senseless
And so does your figure, your cheerful laughter
Dreaming of hand in hand in the rain, we meander
Of snuggling with you underneath the moonlight
And then, together let time gets our hair white

If possible, I would rather be a sparrow,
Fly over mountains and rivers before I rest on a twig in front of
your window. That old tree facing your window is lonesome
So is the wordless bright moon in the darksome
But I won't be, because I am so close to you. I like the fade
lamplight spread through your window; warm, sweet and promising I
can truly feel your breathing But I won’t tweet, won’t perturb
your peace
I would only quietly tidy my wind-disordered wings
Collect the pieces of my heart fatigued.
Afterwards
Stand before your window quietly, thinking of you in silence
Perhaps, I am waiting, waiting for a miracle to me you bring
But I am afraid, afraid that is a dream which will never come
true
I am well aware, I cannot ask for too much
I only hope I can think of you like this in silence –
forever
Many times, thinking of someone like this Is indeed a kind of
happiness, an anticipation.
Buddha says: 500 times of eyesight exchange in previous life
redeems a chance of coming across in present life
I would rather do it 10 thousand times, to trade for a single
chance of meeting you
After that, I would again think of you, with my peaceful lotus-like
heart in a remote corner

Out there, the moonlight pours like water
In here, thoughts have piled up in my little chamber
Take a sip at the fine tea, let the nocturne flow free
Let fly the mood, let fly my vein and me

Tonight, allow me to think of you in silence,
please…

Tonight, Let Me Miss You Silently

Tonight, Let Me Miss You
Silently

Tonight, I sit in a corner gloomily
and miss you silently.
I wonder what you are doing and whether you are missing me;
I wonder whether my figure will come to your sight when you gaze at
the distance;
I wonder whether you will see me waiting at the gate of your dream
when you fall into your sweet dream.
I just like to sit here and miss you silently.

Though,
I wonder whether you can really sense it when I miss you
silently.
If you often feel a kind of unnamable touch in your heart,
Do you know it is because I am missing you silently from
afar?
Just in this way I miss you silently and call you from the bottom
of my heart.
I really want to call you in this peaceful night sky.
Though I know the dark night cannot send my calling very far.
I still believe you are bound to hear it no matter how far you are
from me.
Let me just miss you silently this way in the watery night.
Because of my yearning toward you, the night seems nice and
blue.

I miss you,
I want to ignite an orange lamp and wait quietly for your return
with weariness;
I want to pass you a cup of warm fragrant tea to melt the weariness
on your face;
I want to smooth the wrinkles around your eyes with my tender and
slim fingers;
I want to sooth your upset soul with my soft and sweet
whispers.
Then I will gaze at you silently...

I pray, I pray for peacefulness and
eternity at this moment.
I like to miss you this way,
To drown my heart in the tender pain and sweet happiness.
Accidentally I will silently think of your name,
Your figure and your cheerful laughters;
I wish to walk with you hand in hand in the rain,
I wish to hold you in my arms in the faint moonlight.
Then our hair turns gray along with the time.

If possible, I would rather be a
bird,
Then I could fly across mountains and rivers to rest on a bough
before your window.
The old tree before your window is lonely,
So is the silent bright moon in the night sky.
But I will not be lonely, because I am so near to you.
I like the faint lamplight from your window, warm and serene,
I can feel your breath in a true sense.
But I will not chirp for fear that I disturb your quietness.
I just smooth my wings blowed into a mess by the wind,
And sort out my weary heart.

Then, I will stand
before your window and miss you silently.
Perhaps I am waiting, waiting for a miracle from you.
But I am a little afraid that it is just an unreachable
dream.
I am very clear that I cannot desire too much,
I only wish to miss you in this way until the end of my life.
At most of time, missing someone this way
Actually is a kind of happiness and expectation.
Buddha says: Only 500 back-glances of the past life can exchange a
short meeting of this life.
I would rather exchange ten thousand back-glances for one meeting
with you,
Then I would miss you silently in a far corner with my lotus-like
heart.

The Important Things in Life

Sometimes people come into your life and you know right away
that they were meant to be there, to serve some sort of purpose,
teach you a lesson, or to help you figure out who you are or who
you want to become.

You never know who these people may be - a roommate, a neighbor, a
professor, a friend, a lover, or even a complete stranger - but
when you lock eyes with them, you know at that very moment they
will affect your life in some profound way.

Sometimes things happen to you that may seem horrible, painful, and
unfair at first, but in reflection you find that without overcoming
those obstacles you would have never realized your potential,
strength, willpower, or heart.

Illness, injury, love, lost moments of true greatness, and sheer
stupidity all occur to test the limits of your soul. Without these
small tests, whatever they may be, life would be like a smoothly
paved straight flat road to nowhere. It would be safe and
comfortable, but dull and utterly pointless.

The people you meet who affect your life, and the success and
downfalls you experience, help to create who you are and who you
become. Even the bad experiences can be learned from. In fact, they
are sometimes the most important ones.

If someone loves you, give love back to them in whatever way you
can, not only because they love you, but because in a way, they are
teaching you to love and how to open your heart and eyes to
things.

If someone hurts you, betrays you, or breaks your heart, forgive
them, for they have helped you learn about trust and the importance
of being cautious to whom you open your heart.

Make every day count. Appreciate every moment and take from those
moments everything that you possibly can for you may never be able
to experience it again. Talk to people that you have never talked
to before, and listen to what they have to say.

Let yourself fall in love, break free, and set your sights high.
Hold your head up because you have every right to. Tell yourself
you are a great individual and believe in yourself, for if you
don't believe in yourself, it will be hard for others to believe in
you.

You can make everything you wish of your life. Create your own life
and then go out and live it with absolutely no regrets.

And if you love someone tell them, for you never know what tomorrow
may have in store.

We
convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married,
have a baby, then another. Then we are frustrated that the kids
aren't old enough and we will be more content when they are. After
that we're frustrated that we have teen-agers to deal with. We will
certainly be happy when they are out of that stage. We tell
ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse gets his
or her act together, when we get a nicer car, are able to go on a
nice vacation, when we retire.

The truth is, there is
no better time to be happy than right now. If not now,
when?

Your
life will always be filled with challenges. It is best to admit
this to yourself and decide to be happy anyway. One of my favorite
quotes comes from Alfred D'Souza. He said, "For a long time it had
seemed to me that life was about to begin - real life. But there
was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through
first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to
be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these
obstacles were my life."

This perspective has helped me to see that there is no way to
happiness. Happiness is the way. So, treasure every moment that you
have. And treasure it more because you shared it with someone
special; special enough to spend your time - and remember that time
waits for no one…..

So stop waiting until you finish school, until you go back to
school, until you lose 10 pounds, until you gain 10 pounds, until
you have kids, until your kids leave the house, until you start
work, until you retire, until you get married, until you get
divorced, until Friday night, until Sunday morning, until you get a
new car or home, until your car or home is paid off, until spring,
until summer, until fall, until winter, until you are off welfare,
until the first or 15th, until your song comes on, until you have
had a drink, until you have sobered up, until you die - to decide
that there is no better time than right now to be
happy.

Words from the Heart

Most people need to hear those
"three little words" I love you. Once in a while, they hear them
just in time.
I met Connie the day she was admitted to the hospice ward,
where I worked as a volunteer. Her husband, Bill, stood nervously
nearby as she was transferred from the gurney to the hospital bed.
Although Connie was in the final stages of her fight against
cancer, she was alert and cheerful. We got her settled in. I
finished marking her name on all the hospital supplies she would be
using, then asked if she needed anything.
"Oh, yes," she said, "would you please show me how to use the
TV? I enjoy the soaps so much and I don't want to get behind on
what's happening." Connie was a romantic. She loved soap operas,
romance novels and movies with a good love story. As we became
acquainted, she confided how frustrating it was to be married 32
years to a man who often called her "a silly woman."
"Oh, I know Bill loves me," she said, "but he has never been
one to say he loves me, or send cards to me." She sighed and looked
out the window at the trees in the courtyard. "I'd give anything if
he'd say 'I love you,' but it's just not in his nature."
Bill visited Connie every day. In the beginning, he sat next to
the bed while she watched the soaps. Later, when she began sleeping
more, he paced up and down the hallway outside her room. Soon, when
she no longer watched television and had fewer waking moments, I
began spending more of my volunteer time with Bill.
He talked about having worked as a carpenter and how he liked
to go fishing. He and Connie had no children, but they'd been
enjoying retirement by traveling, until Connie got sick. Bill could
not express his feelings about the fact that his wife was
dying.
One day, over coffee in the cafeteria, I got him on the subject
of women and how we need romance in our lives; how we love to get
sentimental1 cards and love letters.
"Do you tell Connie you love her?" I asked (knowing his answer),
and he looked at me as if I was crazy.
"I don't have to," he said. "She knows I do!"
"I'm sure she knows," I said, reaching over and touching his
hands rough, carpenter's hands that were gripping
the cup as if it were the only thing he had to hang
onto "but she needs to hear it, Bill. She needs
to hear what she has meant to you all these years. Please think
about it."
We walked back to Connie's room. Bill disappeared inside, and I
left to visit another patient. Later, I saw Bill sitting by the
bed. He was holding Connie's hand as she slept. The date was
February 12.
Two days later I walked down the hospice ward
at noon. There stood Bill, leaning up against the wall in the
hallway, staring at the floor. I already knew from the head nurse
that Connie had died at 11 A.M..
When Bill saw me, he allowed himself to come into my arms for a
long time. His face was wet with tears and he was trembling.
Finally, he leaned back against the wall and took a deep
breath.
"I have to say something," he said. "I have to say how good I
feel about telling her." He stopped to blow his nose. "I thought a
lot about what you said, and this morning I told her how much I
loved her... and loved being married to her. You should have
seen her smile!"
I went into the room to say my own goodbye to Connie. There, on
the bedside table, was a large Valentine card from Bill. You know,
the sentimental kind that says, "To my wonderful wife... I love
you."
