In today's class, the students and I discussed a question:
'Do you believe that a class can be entertaining and educational
at the same time?'
As always, I prepared my little speech in my head
beforehand:
--Nowadays students get bored more easily in the classroom
because they grow up in the entertainment culture. They expect
something interesting as well as educational. So what do we
teachers do? Should we be resolutely boring in order to stand
against the “superficial” pop culture? So we can either be “boring
and profound” or “fun and superficial”?
--In my view, a class can be “entertaining” as well as
educational, just as a TV program can be “educational” as well as
entertaining. It’s just that few teachers have made the effort to
be entertaining, and few TV directors have tried to be
educational.
--Cook a nutritious dish, but don’t forget to put in the
season
If you happen to teach second-major students in the evening in
Fudan, then there are two days in a semester on which you get the
most students--the first day and the last day. In fact, being
accustomed to the peace and solitude of the usual evening days,I
always get dizzy on these two days, intimidated by the sheer number
of the students. They arrive on the first day because they want to
check you out, and decide whether it is an easy-to-get-good-grades
course.Then then they disappear for the entire semester and
reappeare on the last day because that's when the final exam takes
place.
After suscessfully tearing apart some girls who refuse
to be separated,I was content to see a classroom of evenly
scattered students with safe distance between them, and gladly
announced the start of the exam. This is a quite enjoyable time for
the teacher. You don't have to worry about what you are going to
say next, all you have to do is to a
