At the end of our trip in Finland, we visited several young designers based in the Helsinki Design District. KatriN was one of them. Katri had just opened her first boutique shop in the area. Katri is a bit shy but we noticed that she became very confident when telling about her designs to us.

Me wearing a blouse designed by KatriN!

Below is my interview with Katri which has been published in a feature about Helsinki Design District in M-Zone magazine.

Katri Niskanen is from the northern part of Finland. Her origins have given her a very gentle personality which is also shown in her designs. Katri started her design career in a pretty dramatic way: by winning the Finnish version of Project Runway. Through her success in the competition, Katri has been invited to design dresses for the wives of musicians, politicians and business tycoons.

When Katri attended Project Runway, she was still studying fashion design at the Lahti Institute of Design. During that period, she was also conducting design independently and working for a local fashion company. She understood that to have her designs exposed in the spotlight, she needs to make them good enough. "At the very beginning, I was a bit afraid. I usually sketch and design in my own little world but it all changed when I decided to participate in the competition. I needed to work under watching eyes and cameras, and to explain my feelings and the design concepts to the audience. This was weird to me." After several rounds in the competition, Katri learned how to face the intensive setting and eventually became a very anticipated winner. "After the competition, I am confident to say to everyone that you must pursue your dream now, rather than sit and wait until tomorrow."

Q: How did you start your brand? What's your vision of the brand for the next 5 years?

A: I already had the vision as a child, (I started drawing and sewing, when I was 5 years old),  it has developed from a hobby to a profession. My first collection was launched in 2010. My plan for the future is to expand abroad, and participate in fashion weeks around the world. Especially Shanghai is a very interesting fashion city.

Q: What made you a fashion designer?

A: I have always loved to be creative, it is my way to express myself. For the love off all beautiful things and my roots from northern Finland reflect who I am as a designer.

Q: What do you enjoy the most of being a fashion designer?

A: The best thing about being a designer is to create new designs, meet a lot of new people, to travel and to always think towards the future. I love to make people happy and smile, it's great to make beautiful and useful things for every girl's closet.

Q: How do you usually start designing a new collection? How do you gather ideas?

A: Traveling and new experiences are inspirations for new collections. Lively streets, changes of the seasons, silence in the forest and my everyday life... Every collection is unique, and they have their own source of inspiration. I start with drawing and searching for new interesting materials. I listen and feel the fabric, it inspires me: the feature and quality guides me throughout the collection.

Q: How do you define Finnish Design?

A: It's very versatile, there's a lot of different styles, but they are all united by plain, modern and playful design.

Q: If you could do one thing to change the world, what would you do?

A: I would abolish jealousy.

Did you know that in addition to Helsinki city, there is also the area called "great Helsinki" which includes Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa. The cities can be called "the sister cities of design". This is post is all about the places we visited in Espoo and Helsinki. Have a look!

Espoo:
City of Espoo: Technology and Nature
On our Radical trip to Finland our first stop in Espoo was Rovio's headquarters - the birth place of super star Angry Birds!
Rovio's office is full of Angry Birds elements. How do you think it would feel to work in this creative environment?
Rovio is not only a game developer but also an established brand extending to every possible area. These popular accessories are proof of that!

Futuro, showcased at EMMA (Espoo Museum of Modern Art), was built by Finnish artist Matti Suuronen in 1968 to represent a "future house".
It's hard to believe that the cutting edge design is built in the 1960s.
Finland is also famous for its rich resource of berries but only 20% of them are picked by the residents. What a waste! Well, the left berries can be used for multiple purposes - for example in the ingredients of LUMENE skincare products.
LUMENE is a local Finnish skincare and cosmetics brand. Their products are made from the essence of berries especially cloud berries. Blueberry, raspberry and other berries give the products a special, natural and long-lasting scent.

You can easily recognize the ingredients from LUMENE's package design. For example, yellow package contains could berry and the purple blueberry.

Helsinki:
City of Helsinki: Design everywhere
Kappelibuilt in 1867, is a historic restaurant located in the city centre of Helsinki.

To bring World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 to Kappeli, the restaurant has set a "Helsinki Design Menu".

Even the tissue is printed with the patterns of World Design Capital Helsinki 2012.

Do you remember when our friend Santa gave us some Marimekko print fabrics and asked us to make something unique? I have been struggling for months and finally decided to start my first experiments on it -- to make an unique tote bag!
I have always wanted to get a tote bag with enough space. I also want to be special and different from those sold in shopping malls. After my research, I found a boutique shop located on Taojiang Road which customs leather shoes and bags. This is the place!
Compare the original fabric on the right and my tote bag on the left! I selected dark green leather to match the Marimekko pattern and I think it worked quite well. I also did a small "experiment": I put the tote bag on my office desk, this made almost all my female colleagues stop and give compliments for the bag!

I've found out that Marimekko encourages the DIY (Do it yourself) concept. The Marimekko blog has a section called "DIY&Design" to teach you how to use Marimekko fabrics to make practical and special objects.

It is the colours as well as its unique patterns that make Marimekko fabrics so special. Mr Zan and I had chance to visit Marimekko factory in Helsinki and we learned about process of making a piece of fabric. In the whole production process, the most important part is the Color Factory which produces colors for pattern. This explains why Marimekko's colors can not be imitated by any other brands. Marimekko keeps the traditional way of printing-screen printing rather than digital printing to keep the vivid color.

I was so envious by seeing numerous Marimekko fabric samples in the factory!

Didn't have a chance to visit the Marimekko factory? Well, the "Design Colours Life - Contemporary Finnish Design and Marimekko" exhibition in The Museum of Contemporary Art Shanghai (MoCA) features the brand's colorful philosophy here in Shanghai.
This exhibition brings not only Marimekko's colorful fabrics and products from Finland to Shanghai but presents Marimekko designers' sketches to showcase the story behind the pattern and the fabrics. In addition, the exhibition also presents numbers of design by Finnish contemporary designers. The exhibition is open until December 7. Don't miss it!

During our August trip to Rovaniemi, we stepped into the Arctic circle for the first time in our life. In the Arctic circle, we not only met dearest Santa Claus, but also got to know an amazing handicraft brand Taigakoru and met Juha Janger, one of its founders.

These ornaments have a enchanting beauty that defies any description. When you see them with your eyes and you will know I do not exaggerate.

This is Mr. Juha Janger, who co-founded Taigakoru in 1981. Even though the brand has evolved into a mature business now, he still keeps himself busy with designing and tailor-making special pieces for clients.

This is the studio behind the shop front. I was amazed by the tools that scattered around the working table and couldn't help wondering what a complicated process it takes to make one ornament.

Mr. Janger was showing us an engagement ring he's currently making for a customer. Lapland has abundant gold mine resources, so this area is famous for golden ornaments and craftsmanship. But what makes Taigakoru special from other ornament makers is the way they use gold. Rather than melting small pieces of gold into a big chunk, they keep the natural forms of each piece and apply them directly but skillfully onto the ring band, creating a unique texture reminiscent of gold mines.

After chatting with Mr. Janger, I started to understand where the charm comes from. Every design of Taigakoru didn't come into being out of nowhere, but has a deep root of arctic cultures, especially the culture and tradition formed by the Lapland nomads. For instance, the original version of these strange-looking ornaments used to be hang over a baby trolley to lull the babies to sleep. Now with a contemporary twist, they became beautiful accessories, and at the same time, carried on the nomadic culture in a fresh way.

This is another example of inheriting the nomadic cultures in modern times. This round-shaped ornament was a symbol of wealth and women wore them on their wedding day. The more she wore, the richer her family was as shown. Once you get to know the stories behind the design, you can better appreciate the design as itself and as a context of cultures.

Taigakoru has created so many ornaments in various forms and functions. These two charms well explained two major motifs of Taigakoru's design: the nature--fish, and the tales--angel.

Sorry, show off time! : P
This necklace is a gift from Mr. Janger and is inspired by the symbol of sun used by the nomads.

And this is a gift from Mr. Zan. Surprisingly, as a guy who has no understanding of ladies' accessories, he completely fell for Taigakoru's designs. The arctic aura is so irresistible!

Waara Skateboards, created in 2009, is a company manufacturing unique handmade cruiser skateboards. Boards are made with traditional woodwork including special details such as intarsia technique. Ash ply gives the boards their distinctive look. Everything is produced in Finland using the local resources. I met Matti from Waara Skateboards during my stay in Helsinki. I kept the skateboard he gave me and hung it on the wall in my apartment in Shanghai. Too precious to be used!

"Make your way to the grocery store, work or walk your dog on a Waara deck and life becomes more fun between the skate-sessions. The most important thing at Waara skateboards is creating a quality-handcrafted product with friends."

Have a look at the interview I did with Matti and people in Helsinki. Let them bring you to the world of skateboarding in Finland!

In the past decade, sustainability has become one of the hottest topics globally and we have seen many brands coming up waving the ecologic flag. We want to introduce Globe Hope, a Finnish brand combining ecological elements and creativities so well. Before we dip into its history, let's first see what it has created!
This heat-proof glove for the kitchen was made from recycled sacks used in the military. But can you guess what the cute whales necklace were made of? Vinyls that used to host beautiful music!

I've experienced a lot as Uncle Bobby‘s cool vintage leather jacket.(当年我是波比舅舅那件很酷的古董皮外套,经历过许多风风雨雨。)
The Blue leather clutch bag was patched with several pieces of fabric cut out from different second-hand leather jackets, and there is a sweet sentence telling its origin: I've experienced a lot as Uncle Bobby‘s cool vintage leather jacket. But when we talk about recycled fabrics, it doesn't only mean second-handed materials. It can also be dead stock clothes that give birth to those cute and beautiful changes purses.

See how ugly zippers are transformed into very nice accessories. All you need is a little bit of creativity.

Globe Hope
Globe Hope releases two seasons of fashion pieces every year. The simplistic and functional design best well demonstrates the three keywords of the brand: ecology, ethic, aesthetic. In product wise, "ethic" might sound new and strange to Chinese consumers. It means the manufacturing process strictly conforms to ethic requirements, including reasonable working hours, no child labour, less emission as possible.

Now let's watch the video from our visit to the Globe Hope store in Helsinki and get to know more about Globe Hope's ecological business concept!

Globe Hope

On our Radical Design Trip, we not only saw a lot of classic Finnish design but also met some energetic young brands. Ivana Helsinki is one of them. You can tell from the name that this brand is closely linked to Helsinki where the two sister-founders Pirjo and Paola Suhonen were born and brought up. Ivana Helsinki was founded in 1998, and Paola the younger sister is the chief designer while Pirjo is taking care of the business side.

After more than one decade, Ivana Helsinki has already won its place in both Finnish and international fashion world by its distinct style. They were the first Finnish fashion brand listed in the official fashion week program when they joined Paris Fashion Week in 2008 and New York Fashion Week in 2010.

Early this month, Ivana Helsinki made its appearance again in New York Fashion Week, presenting the 2013 Spring/Summer collection Mourning Sun Motel. As the collection literally suggests, the runway show has a lonely and sober vibe. Paola explained a bit about it, “while travelling I took photographs of wallpapers in different motels and the Mourning Sun Motel collection prints were inspired by those photos”.

Ivana Helsinki
Even though it's a spring/summer collection, there are some calm hues in the collection, stimulating a sense of mystery.

Prints are one of the signature of Ivana Helsinki and you can see them almost every season. (And I LOVE them!)

The puffy sleeves added a touch of femininity to the floral dress.

Paola with the models. Beside designing clothes, Paola is also an independent film maker and is now studying film making in American Film Institue in L.A. She just released her first feature film this summer and made a premier screening at the FLOW music festival.

This is the Ivana Helsinki shop in the Design District of Helsinki. These pieces are from the Spring/Summer collection of 2012 and featured very beautiful bohemian and tribal prints. I have checked out some of their previous designs online, and felt that the brand is trying to convey a special femininity that combines feminine (or even girly) cuttings with a confident attitude spoken out by the unique prints.

Ivana Helsinki also set foot in other design fields like fabric, accessories, products and even mobile interface, and has already collaborated with a variety of brands. Look here to know more about their cross-over projects.

Of course, while visiting the Ivana Helsinki store I had a chance to try whatever I like and pick one for myself!

Eventually I picked the one they showed in the shop window and I was asked to pose together with the mannequin...

This blue dress with feather prints and the flared hems fits perfectly with Shanghai's autumn day.

Oversized surprise from Santa! The other day, we found two big and heavy boxes lying at our doorstep and you know what was inside? The famous K Chair we've seen in the chair exhibition in Helsinki Airport's Design Gallery, and a huge carpet that can cover up our living room!
These beautiful furnitures are made by the Finnish manufacturer Woodnotes. This family-run brand was founded by the textile designer Ritva Puotila and her son Mikko Puotila back in 1987. At that time, ecological products was not yet a popular trend, but they have already set out a vision for recycled and reused materials.

The cover of the K Chair and the carpet are all made from spun paper yarn, which is made from the most abundant and most natural material--wood. Beside being reusable and environmentally friendly, another good thing about paper yarn is the high density, which makes sure that the surface doesn't easily gather dust. In this case, it's very easy to clean up and doesn't cause allergies.

The carpet named Avenue is one of latest Woodnotes products and is designed by the founder Ritva Puotila. The delightful colors can be seen as a song dedicated to the beautiful spring time.

It's time for our living room to have a make-over!

Right after the make-over, we invited a group of friends to experience our upgraded living room!
