TESOL Capstone Requirements

Students in the MIIS TESOL Program complete a double Capstone as their exit mechanism and part of the graduation requirements. The Capstone, which includes an Applied Linguistics Capstone and a Practicum Capstone, provides a balance of the multiple foci of this unique program.

The Applied Linguistics Capstone is designed to help TESOL students refine their skills as applied linguistics professionals. Students will develop either a curriculum project, an empirical research report, or an assessment tool, using original data that they have collected and analyzed. This capstone also aims to encourage student reflection on their previous coursework, as well as explore and clarify their future plans for careers as language teaching professionals.

The Practicum Capstone combines reflective practice and professional development in preparing students for a career in language education. Students integrate theory, research, and conceptual foundations into a coherent and well-informed approach to planning and executing lessons. They also incorporate these three components when developing and deploying instructional materials and assessment instruments. Activities and products prepare students for entering the language teaching profession and performing admirably therein.

TFL 课程介绍

Curriculum:

The Master's in Teaching Foreign Languages (TFL) is a 40-unit program that can be completed in three or four semesters. The course work prepares graduates to be leaders in language education and foreign language teaching.

Core Course Work

Our professional curriculum emphasizes the integration of pedagogy and practice, as well as related theories and research. You will gain skills and expertise through the practical application of theory with such activities as designing curricula and materials, developing language tests, conducting research projects, and teaching language classes. The course work is centered on these areas of focus:

1. Linguistics:

You will examine the ways in which knowledge about languages—and how languages are structured, used, and learned—influences your teaching and classroom practices.

2. Pedagogy:

You will consider your language learners’ goals and explore how various pedagogical practices can enhance their learning. You will use this knowledge as you create language curricula and lessons designed to maximize your effectiveness in the classroom.

3. Research and Assessment:

You will study research and assessment practices relevant to the language teaching field to explore the ways in which research studies and assessment tools are designed and conducted—and the ways in which research and assessments influence your classroom practices. You will also learn how to design research studies and assessment tools so you can more closely examine issues of direct concern and relevance to you and your students.

4. Language and Intercultural Competency:

Courses taught in the language of study combine language skills development with topics related to graduate degree work and professional interests. Our intercultural competency offerings provide students with the cross-cultural communication skills needed to pursue global careers. Sample courses include:

  • Teaching Chinese in a Globalized Context (in Chinese)
  • Comparative and International Education in Latin America (in Spanish)
  • Models and Decision-Making for Positive Change (in French)
  • Intercultural Group Dynamics
  • Multilingual Communication in Multicultural Settings
5. Capstone:

You will strengthen your expertise through a double capstone, including an applied linguistics capstone and a practicum capstone, which provides a balance of the multiple foci of this program.

  • The Applied Linguistics Capstone helps students refine their skills as applied linguistics professionals. Students will develop a curriculum project, an empirical research report, or an assessment tool using original data that they have collected and analyzed. This capstone also aims to encourage the students’ reflection on their previous course work as well as exploration and clarification of their future plans for careers as language teaching professionals.
  • The Practicum Capstone combines reflective practice and professional development in preparing students for a career in language education. Students integrate theory, research, and conceptual foundations into a coherent and well-informed approach to planning and executing lessons. They also incorporate these three components when developing and using instructional materials and assessment instruments. Activities and products prepare students for successful entrance into the language teaching profession.
Specializations

Students can choose to add a specialization to the degree course work. Students pursuing a specialization will incur additional costs and an additional semester. Specializations include:

  • Language Program AdministrationAdd a 17-credit specialization in Language Program Administration to gain professional skills such as developing budgets and monitoring expenses, training teachers and aides, and evaluating program effectiveness.
  • Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)Add a 17-credit specialization in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) to provide broader professional expertise and additional career avenues.
  • International Education Management
Advanced (3 Semesters) Degree

We offer a 30-unit, three-semester program to students who have completed previous TFL course work. Students in this track work with faculty and their advisor to design their program based upon previous course work.

Middlebury Institute Team Wins 2nd Place in Economist Business Case Competition

March 2, 2016

Beating out competitors from many of the best known business programs around the world, a team from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey won second place and a $5,000 cash award in The Economist‘s 2016 Which MBA? case competition. This year‘s team follows in the footsteps of the Institute team that won this competition last year and other MIIS teams that have recorded strong finishes in other recent business case competitions.

“It was such a great experience,” says team member Michael Mahoney MBA ’15. “You learn so much in a short period of time.” As is typically the case at the Middlebury Institute, the team members have a lot of international experience. After graduating from McGill University, Mahoney worked in publishing and corporate governance in both Japan and the US. Hesham Alsaati MBA/MAIEP ’17 is a Fulbright student from Bahrain who worked as a consultant at KPMG before moving to Monterey, and classmate Thomas Gilmore MBA/MAIEP '17 served in the U.S. Navy for six years as a Chinese language analyst.

Gilmore says that the support the team received from faculty and staff was invaluable. This year’s challenge was sponsored by Real Vision TV, an on-demand channel for investing. The question teams had to answer was: “Walmart vs. Amazon: Which stock would you choose to invest in if you couldn’t sell for a decade and why?” The deliverables included both a detailed analysis and a five-minute video to support their investment thesis. The Institute team‘s video was produced with support from Mark Basse of the Digital Learning Commons.

All three students agree that working on this project was “a fun kind of challenge,” noting that they made the choice to participate in this competition together. “We worked until late into the night before the due date,” shares Alsaati, adding that it was sort of like a movie scene as it was a rare stormy night in California. “We sat in the Samson Reading Room eating trail mix and typing furiously,” adds Mahoney, laughing.

The top five videos will be aired on Real Vision. The winning team came from Ted Rogers School of Management at Ryerson University and third place was awarded to a team from Brigham Young University. Others participating in the competition included teams from Johns Hopkins, the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy at Tufts, the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, the Kogood School of Business at American Unioversity, and the London Business School.

MBA students Thomas Gilmore, Hesham Alsaati, and Michael Mahoney won second prize in The Economist’s prestigious and very competitive Which MBA? case competition, beating out teams from Johns Hopkins, Tufts, Dartmouth, and Emory, among others.

2月19日上周五,四十余家公司及组织的代表来到蒙特雷参加今年的TILM招聘会,其中包括Netflix、美国国务院、Paypal、世界知识产权组织(WIPO)等等。

Career Fair Includes 31 Alumni Returning to Monterey to Recruit Students

The Middlebury Institute’s February 19 language-focused Career Fair attracted recruiters from as far away as China, Thailand and Switzerland, 31 of them Institute alumni.

Forty organizations including Netflix, the U.S. State Department, Stanford Health Care, and PayPal sent representative to recruit Middlebury Institute students at the Translation, Interpretation and Localization Management (TILM) Career Fair on February 19. Held at the Portola Hotel in Monterey, the fair was once again a draw for alumni returning to recruit students for various positions in their field; this year 31 alumni attended, representing 17 different organizations from near and far.

Jaffee Lu MACI ’13 probably made the longest trip, traveling from Beijing to recruit for LeEco (formally LeTV). He was joined by classmate and colleague Vladimir Melnikov MACI ’13. Harold Henthorn of Star Group also traveled from Asia to recruit uniquely qualified Institute students. Most representatives travelled from within the United States, including Johanna Parker MATI ’05 and Natalia Zoubko MATLM/TI ’11, recruiters for Bay Area employers Stanford Health Care and eBay.

Events like the TILM Career Fair are inevitably inspiring for students, alumni, faculty, and employers alike. The professionalism and positive energy students brought along with their resumes was met with with equal enthusiasm by the employers present. For faculty, meeting former students who are very satisfied in the professional careers is as rewarding as it gets. And judging from the number of organizations that have become annual subscribers to the fair, it is clear that the students are graduating with the knowledge and skills needed to launch their professional careers. As a representative from Honda R&D remarked “Our language program would not be where it is without your wonderful graduates!”
