This post kicks off a series of posts on the design of the Start screen and the evolution of the core activity of launching and switching programs. Some folks are calling the Start screen the 'Metro shell' for Windows 8, but for us it is the evolution of the Start menu and associated functions. We've been watching the comments closely and have seen the full spectrum of reactions as one would expect when the core interface changes. We want to use these blog posts to have a dialog that reflects back on your comments, and so we’ll start by walking you through the history and decisions that led to the current design. Because the Developer Preview is focused on building apps, and the core user experience is still under development, we want to make sure our discussions start from first principles and work through the design to provide a fuller context for where we will be at the next project milestone.-----Steven Ballmer

Building on the recent post about signing in to Windows 8 with a Windows Live ID, we wanted to talk a bit about using SkyDrive from within new Windows 8 Metro style apps. While apps get some amount of 'automatic usage' of SkyDrive to roam settings, and the apps themselves roam, we know developers are anxious to make it easy for customers of their applications to have data they create roam easily across devices. SkyDrive is a great way to do this as every Windows Live ID has a free cloud-based drive. This post talks about how developers can build Metro style apps that use SkyDrive storage from within the apps. This is our first post with code--expect more of those! Mike Torres, the group program manager of the SkyDrive Devices and Roaming team, authored

With Windows 8, we introduce the optional capability to sign in to your PC with a Windows Live ID and, by doing so, gaining the ability to roam a broad range of settings across all of your PCs. In this article by Katie Frigon, the group program manager of the You-Centered Experience team, she describes the feature and its benefits.------Steve Ballmer

Each Windows user wants to have the ability to set up and use a PC in a way that is unique to them. Doing so, however, can be challenging in today's multiple user and multiple PC environment. We know that shared PC usage is common and we've heard from many of you t

You wanted to see what other members of the Windows team like most about Windows 8 so we asked some of our Windows engineers. Check out what they say in this video below.

Based on what you saw today from the BUILD keynote and reading here in my blog post – I am curious to hear what you are most excited about for Windows 8? Be sure to also check out my blog post featuring my experience with Windows 8 as we

The keynote finished a few hours ago at BUILD where Steven Sinofsky and other members of his engineering leadership team shared a detailed preview of the next major Windows release codenamed “Windows 8” to the thousands of developers in attendance here in Anaheim.

As I look around the room (and look at all the tweets), it seems that everyone is excited by what they just saw. As Steven said during the keynote, Windows 8 is computing reimagined. It’s Windows reimagined. We’re not just showing developers an early look at Windows 8; we’re also giving them access with a Developer Preview release. Steven Sinofsky has published a blog post on Building Windows 8 today that discusses the Developer Preview (including when

Hello everyone. Six days ago we started rolling out the Windows Phone 7.5 “Mango” update around the globe. Here's how it's going.

Within the first hours of making it available, we saw successful updates in every country, on every carrier, and for nearly every Windows Phone model. (To see which ones are currently getting it, see Where’s My Phone Update?) On behalf of the engineering team, I want pass on a big thank you for updating your phones so quickly, since it helps us gather the data we need to make decisions more rapidly.

In fact, the update success rate

At the BUILD conference in September, we unveiled developer previews of Visual Studio 11, Expression Blend 5, Team Foundation Server 11, and the .NET Framework 4.5.

We’ve been working on these technologies in earnest since we shipped the previous wave of these development tools last year, and we've had the opportunity to make significant enhancements, across the IDE, frameworks, libraries, languages, and services. Over my next several blog posts, I’ll be sharing with you some of my thoughts on big steps forward we’ve made in various areas of this development tooling, innovations that help to make developers, testers, and anyone involved in the software application lifecycle far more productive in their daily lives.

For this initial post, I’ll be focusing on programming languages and on the enhancements we’ve made both to their expressivity and supporting tooling. Languages exist at the center of everything developers do. Developers often pride themselves on the qu

The Imagine Cup brings together students from all walks of life from around the world and tasks them with a big challenge: solve the world’s toughest problems through technology.

I have been involved in the competition for all of its nine years, and each year, I am astounded by the caliber of the projects. The creators aren’t just innovators, but busy students. And yet, they manage to develop projects that could make a difference in the lives of many.

As I look at the project list, I can’t help but notice a couple of overwhelming trends that reflect students’ role at the cutting edge of technology. First, 75% of all software design projects utilize Windows Phone 7 in new ways, such as diagnos

1 Jun 2011,Steven Sinofsky and Julie Larson-Green announced that we’ll be starting a dialog with developers about the next generation of Windows, internally codenamed “Windows 8'. We’re very excited to invite you to be a part of the conversation at BUILD, our new developer conference taking place September 13-16 in Anaheim, California. Registration is now open at buildwindows.com.

BUILD is the event for developers who want a front row seat at the industry’s first deep dive on Windows 8. It is where the full spectrum of developers - from startups and entrepreneurs to tho
