Conditionals 1
Conditionals are sentences with two clauses – an ‘if clause and
a main clause – that are closely related. Conditional sentences are
often divided into different types.
Zero conditional
We use the zero conditional to talk about
things that are always true.
- If you heat water, it boils.
- When the sun goes down, it gets dark.
- It lights up if you push that button.
The present simple is used in both clauses.
First conditional
We use the first conditional when we talk about
real and possible situations.
- I’ll go shopping on the way home if I have time.
- If it’s a nice day tomorrow we’ll go to the
beach.
- If Arsenal win they’ll be top of the league.
In first conditional sentences, the structure is usually
if + present simple and will +
infinitive. It’s not important which clause comes
first.
Second conditional
The second conditional is used to talk about
‘unreal’ or impossible things.
- If I won a lot of money I’d buy a big house in the
country.
- Where would you live if you could live anywhere in the
world?
- If you didn’t smoke so much you’d feel a lot
better.
The structure is usually if + past simple and
would + infinitive. It’s not important which
clause comes first.
Look at the difference between the first and second
conditionals.
- In January: If it snows tomorrow I’ll go skiing. It
might snow tomorrow.
- In August: If it snowed tomorrow I’d go skiing. It
almost certainly won’t snow tomorrow.
NOTE: Although many conditional sentences use if + will/would,
conditional sentences can also use other words instead of ‘if’ –
e.g. ‘when’ ‘as soon as’ ‘in case’ Other modal verbs can be used
instead of ‘will/would’ – e.g. ‘can/could’, ‘may’ ‘might’.
We use the verb
had and the past
participle for the past perfect:
I had finished the
work.
She had gone .
The past perfect continuous is formed with
had been and the
-ing form of the
verb:
I had been
finishing the work
She had been going.
The past perfect is used in the same way as the present perfect,
but it refers to a time in the past, not the present.
We use the past perfect tense:
- for something that started in the past and continued up to a
given time in the past:
When George died he and Anne had been
married for nearly fifty years.
She didn’t want to move. She had lived in
Liverpool all her life.
We normally use the past perfect continuous for
this:
She didn’t want to move. She had been
living in Liverpool all her life.
Everything was wet. It had been raining for
hours.
- for something we had done several times up to
a point in the past and continued to do
after that point:
He was a wonderful guitarist. He had
been playing ever since he was a teenager.
He had written three books and he was working on
another one.
I had been watching the programme every week, but
I missed the last episode.
We often use a clause with since to
show when something started in the past:
They had been staying with us
since the previous week.
I was sorry when the factory closed. I had worked there
since I left school.
I had been watching that programme every week
since it started, but I missed the last
episode.
- when we are reporting our experience and
including up to the (then) present:
My eighteenth birthday was the worst day I
had ever had.
I was pleased to meet George. I hadn’t met him before, even though
I had met his wife several times.
- for something that happened in the past but is important at the
time of reporting:
I couldn’t get into the house. I had
lost my keys.
Teresa wasn’t at home. She had gone shopping.
We use the past perfect to talk about the past in
conditions, hypotheses and
wishes:
I would have helped him
if he had
asked.
It was very dangerous.
What if you had got
lost?
我一直在纠结于我的visa结果。

Proposal
Introduction
As requested,I am submitting the following proposal on how to
encourage our workforce to become fitter and healthier.
Diet
1,Health Education
A number of our staff appear to be unaware of the consequences of
eating fried fatty food. I recommend that we run own health
campaign, which posters and leaflets, encourage people to eat a
healthier diet.
2,Practical Steps
In the meantime, we should take some practical steps. Many members
of staff are in the habit of working through their lunchtime. It is
common practice for them to order a burger or pizza, which they eat
at their desks.I propose that we encourage staff to make a proper
break and to go to the staff restaurant where healthier foods such
as salads would be included on the menu.
Exercise
1,The Current Situation
When questioned, most workers said they were aware of the health
benefits of exercising and the dangers of obesity. However, it is a
fact that some of our staff commute considerable distances in order
to get to work, which means that they have limited leisure time in
the evenings. If we were to offer exercise facilities at work, it
appears that a substantial number of people would be ready to take
advantage of these.
2,Practical Steps
I suggest we set up a staff gymnasium with showers and a coffee
bar, which people could use either before or after work or during
the lunch period, staff would then have the opportunity to exercise
on the premises without inconvenience or expense. We should also
run after-work classes in aerobics and step dancing and set up a
football club to encourage those who could not normally use a
gym.
Expenditure
I believe that the long-term benefits to our company would very
quickly offset the expenditure involved. Fewer days would be lost
to sickness and the work capacity and general morale of
the staff would be much higher.
Conclusion
I believe that my proposal is the best way to create a healthier
and fitter workforce and I trust you will give it your full
consideration.
Report on how young people spend their leisure
time
Introduction
This report
is based on a table which compares the ways young people spend
their free time. It compares the hours spent each week on six
different activities, in 1985 and 2005.
The changes
The
following changes have taken place during the twenty yer period
:
·
Sport / exercise : The
number of hours decreased dramatically from 4 to 1.
·
Reading books : There was a
significant drop from 2.5 to 0.5
·
Watching TV : The number of
hours rose slightly from 20 to 22
·
Computer / video games : There
was a dramatic increase from 0.5 to 20 hours
·
Playing other games : There
was a decrease by 3.5 hours
·
Listening to music : There was
a slight growth from 12 to 13 hours
The most significant change
Overall, the
most significant change has been the dramatic increase in the time
spent on computer and video games, an increase of 19.5 hours every
week.
Reasons for the changes
In my
opinion the changes have occurred for the following reasons
:
1.
Technological change :
Technology has changed enormously and young people are choosing the
computer as their main source of entertainment due to their
convenience and content. Many young people have computers in their
bedrooms because they have become more affordable as they have
developed. In addition to computer games, social networking sites
and video sharing sites have become available, all of which are
extremely popular with young people.
2.
Parental fears : It would seem
that despite online safety fears, parents are more worried about
young people being outside the home. Parents would rather know that
their young person is in their bedroom rather than at risk from
violent gangs, drug activities or paedophiles.
3.
Lack of recreational space outside
the home : Many housing estates have been reduced in size and
there is no space for recreational sport.
