Fifth avenue up down
Answers to the Exercises
I Questions
A
1. What changes have taken place on the rehabilitated side of the
avenue? Describe the shops on the other side of the avenue.
On the rehabilitated side of the avenue, there is a housing
project standing and there are some stunted city trees. But the
grocery store and the shoe-repair store on the other side of the
avenue have not changed at all. The grocery store still gives the
black people living in the area credit and the other shop can
repair their shoes. It shows that the housing project has not
improved the lives of the blacks living in Harlem.
2. Which part of Harlem is the author describing? Why does he only
describe this part?
The author is describing Harlem, the area around the Fifth Avenue
where only the blacks live. He chooses to describe this area
because he wants to

1. How did Dr. Johnson define the word lexicographer? What did he
mean?
Dr. Johnson defined the lexicographer as 'a harmless drudge'. By
doing that, he meant something more the literal meaning of the
three words. He wanted to point out that a lexicographer does a lot
of hard work and that his work is meaningful. Being a lexicographer
himself, he did not like to praise the occupation openly, so he put
his ideas lightly in an understatement.
2. What makes the lexicographer think that the letter A is
typical? Is it really typical? Is there a typical letter?
It is the ignorance of the amount of drudgery involved in making a
dictionary that makes the lexicographer think the letter A is
typical. In fact, A is not really typical, and what's more, there
is no typical letter among all

The organization of the
article
Paragraphs 1-2: The writer dislikes
war not only for its dangers but also because of the loss of human
lives, including those of the enemy country. But Nature will not
stop wars for man, so in order to stop war everyone should make an
effort.
Paragraphs 3-4: The charter of the pacifist movement against war
refuses to accept the fact of human nature. Because there are
people who persistently break the social rule of 'live and let
live', even pacifists must try to stop them.
Paragraph 5: The war that would destroy civilization is the class
war, the war between Capitalism and Communism. This kind of war is
threatening the world now.
Paragraphs 6-7 A serious misdistribution of wealth, labour and
leisure is causing social conflicts in

1. What
about this danger of war, which is making us all shake in our
shoes at present? (paragraph
1)
'What about' is here used to introduce a new topic, the danger of
war.
Note that this is not the beginning of the article.
2. I have visions of streets heaped with mangled corpses
in which (streets的定语)children wander for their parents… (paragraph 1)
3. This is what war means nowadays .(这里暗示了同以往战争情形的对照) (paragraph 1
一. How to Grow
Old
The organization of
the article
Paragraphs 1-2: the proper recipe for
remaining young
Paragraphs 3-5: two psychological dangers to be guarded
against
undue absorption in the past (paragraph 3)
clinging to the youth hoping to suck vigour (paragraph 4):
the importance of impersonal interests for the old (paragraph

Paragraph 6: how to overcome the fear of death
一. How to Grow Old
Additional notes
1. How to
Grow old
This title is a bit of a joke.
We say how to study English and we may say how to remain young but
we do not usually say how to grow old.
Because one does not make an effort to grow old and one can't help
growing old.
2. My first advice would be to choose your ancestors
carefully.
The author is not serious in saying so. In fact, no one can choose
his ancestors in any way. (paragraph
1)
The author is trying to build up a light tone partly because this
topic is not a happy one -- it is not easy to face old age.
Another reason for the author to start the topic this way is to
introduce his great-grandmother into the article. For the author
wants to recommend to the reader her
