真的爱QQ(2009-07-19 01:16)

腾讯公司因而启用新域名tencent.comtencent.net,并将OICQ改名为QQ。

Hidden within the depths of China’s past lies one of the greatest untold secrets of history. Many of the greatest inventions and discover ancient Chinese inventions and incredible impact they have had on our world.

In the year 1842, a British invasion fleet of paddled wheels steam ships prepared for battle of the coast of China, they were surprised to discover that the Chinese fleet included several paddle boats of their own. The British opened fire, the Chinese warships were no match of modern British galleons, the Chinese realized they couldn't compete with against the superior military technology of the western invaders, and with great shame, they surrendered. Commander William Hutcheon Hall, was first mate on one of the victorious British ships, he recorded his amazement at how fast the Chinese have copied the British idea of the paddle boat:

'The most remarkable improvement of the Chinese navy was the construction of several large wheeled vessels, the idea must have been suggested to them by reports concerning the wonderful power of our steamers or wheeled vessels.'  - W.H. Hall

Commander Hall could not have been more mistaken, in fact, far from copying the British, the Chinese had attempted to revive an ancient invention of their own, a thousand years earlier the Chinese had whole fleets of paddle wheelers. By the 12th century, these paddle boat warships had reached lengths of over 90 meters with crews of 800 men, the paddle boat warships was just one of many amazing ancient Chinese inventions.

In 1974, three Chinese farmers made a stunning archeological find, one that would prove that the technology of the ancient Chinese was by far the most advanced in the world. While digging a well the farmers stumbled on broken pieces of a statue; they had discovered one of the legendary terracotta warriors of Qin Shi HuangDi, the first emperor of China. Excavation of a vault below revealed thousands of soldiers in battle formation, an entire army designed to follow its emperor into eternity. 250 years Before Christ this powerful force ruthlessly conquered all the rival kingdoms of China and unified them into an empire. Archeologists believe that they have uncovered part of the answer as to what made this army so invincible.

Originally these terracotta soldiers were equipped with real weapons, weapons that have mainly disintegrated when the farmers made their find. But Archeologists did find metal remnants of these weapons scattered around the figures. Out of the dust emerged sword blades that were still sharp after two millennia. They also uncovered intricate bronze crossbow triggers; these mechanisms were precision engineered using a technology 13 hundred years ahead of their time and were as complex as modern rifle bolts. 2000 years ago, no other people on earth had anything near the technology to produce even one of these triggers, let alone the hundreds of thousands the emperor had mass produced for his army. With these crossbows, Chinese troops became the most feared in the world.

In the centuries to come, the Chinese crossbow would become deadlier. The Chinese army discovered how to attach a magazine of bolts to the crossbow, creating an effect of a world’s first machine gun. A force of hundred men armed with these lethal weapons, could fire two thousand arrows in only fifteen seconds. Thousands of years later, Chinese soldiers were still using crossbows against the British invaders. In the 19th century it may have been an outdated weapon but 2000 years ago the crossbow was one of the most high-tech inventions the world had ever seen.

Perhaps the most impressive weapon invented by Chinese navies was the first multi-staged rocket. After launching, this rocket could apparently fly three or four feet above the water as far as a mile, or just under two kilometers. When the propulsion rockets burnt out, the gunpowder in the belly ignited, launching rockets arrows and destroying the enemy ship. This ancient Chinese rocket, called “The Fire Dragon Issuing from the Water,” was an eerie forerunner of the modern Exocet surface-skimming naval rocket.

The west, on a foundation of Chinese innovations, spurted ahead of the East. Today, very few people in east or West are aware of the Chinese contribution to the foundation of our modern world.

I Hate Valentine's Day(2009-02-08 19:22)

I Hate Valentine's Day

As soon as I changed my personal message on MSN to 'I hate Valentine's Day', lot of people started asking me why I hate it? Well, I've decided to put the answer on my blog as well.

I believe that the whole idea or concept of Valentine's Day is really stupid and childish. Why do we need to specify one day as a day for lovers? Love is not for one day, it's forever? Why we need to celebrate love on that day? When you love someone forever you are celebrating it everyday. Some people say that this day is for remembering some lovely stories. Who cares about remembering those 'lovely' stories of other people? Two people fell in love, so what? I should have my own story.

Some say that it is to confess your love to the person on whom you have a crush. How stupid is that? You'll definetly get rejected if you do that because girls might think you are just being flirty on that day. I would never do that.

I think this event was propogated by some chocolate makers who just wanted to have a huge sale of chocolates on that day. Nicely wrapped inside a heart-shaped box, so tempting that no one can resist to buy them for their lovers. The chocolate makers must be going really crazy 'Profit baby, profit!'

Few months ago, I read an advertisement about a soap. That soap manufacturer advertised by propogating a 'Hand Washing Day', I never heard of such a day before. Where did this day come from? How many 'Days' are you going to have? As if you never wash your hands and this day is specially for washing your hands. I bet there must be a 'Face Washing Day', 'Bath Day' (for those who never took a bath in 365 days) and 'Bathroom Washing Day' too. How ironic? What is this world turning into?

Someone asked me, ok, if you hate Valentine's Day, then you must also be hating Mother's Day, Father's Day and Children's Day. I told her that in western cultures it is quite common for young people to leave their parents behind and live entierly on their own, and their societies support this infrastructure. For them these days maybe important to remember their parents. However, in most of the Eastern societies, children are very loyal to their parents and taking care of them when they are old is considered an obligation.

For lovers, wedding anniversary is important because it is their special day, it is the day when they got married. Similarly your Birthday is important because it is the day when you were born, so it is your special day. But what's the point of Valentine's Day? Why it has become more important than the Wedding Anniversary.

China and Valentine's Day?
One thing that has alarmed me is that in China, people always turn mad when it comes to Valentine's Day. Some years ago, the concept of Valentine's Day never existed in that country. But now, young Chinese people don't take so much interest in their own festivals as much as they do in Valentine's Day and other western festivals like Christmas. They have all become western wannabes. I'm afraid someday the Chinese culture, traditions and customs will be lost forever, this will make China a very boring place to live. And if there will be any culture left, it will be a mixed and confusing culture. China has already lost many of their customs.

China has a 5,000 years of continous civilization and an amazing culture. Preserving this culture is highly important. Just imagine, if the whole world has same culture, traditions and customs, then the whole world will turn out to be a very boring place. Learning about different cultures and festivals is very good, but celebrating festivals of alien cultures in your own country may sometimes turn out to be very disastrous for the local cultures. But I'm glad that traditional societies still exist in Japan and Korea atleast, and they haven't lost most of their customs.
