Today is a gift

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room‘s only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end.

They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation. And every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing t

A Thanksgiving Story

It was the day before Thanksgiving -- the first one my three children and I would be spending without their father, who had left several months before. Now the two older children were very sick with the flu, and the eldest had just been prescribed bed rest for a week.

It was a cool, gray day outside, and a light rain was falling. I grew wearier as I scurried around, trying to care for each child: thermometers, juice, diapers. And I was fast running out of liquids for the children. But when I checked my purse, all I found was about $2.50 -- and this was supposed to last me until the end of th

How to Let Go and Forgive

We’ve all been hurt by another person at some time or another — we were treated badly, trust was broken, hearts were hurt.

And while this pain is normal, sometimes that pain lingers for too long. We relive the pain over and over, and have a hard time letting go.

This causes problems. It not only causes us to be unhappy, but can strain or ruin relationships, distract us from work and family and other important things, make us reluctant to open up to new things and people. We get trapped in a cycle of anger and hurt, and miss out

THIS paragraph is not ordinary. Look at it. At first, it won't look too odd. Just a normal paragraph – you may think. But look at it again and you might find it a bit unusual. Just a tiny bit. What's wrong with it, you may ask? Nothing wrong at all, in fact, as I said, it's just slightly unusual. It's difficult to put it in words. Look again. Is anything not right? Can you spot it? Is anything… missing?
What you've just read is a lipogram – a text written without using a particular letter of the alphabet. It's the hardest kind of lipogram, as it doesn't contain the letter E – the most common letter in the English language. Try writing one

New politics for a new time

On August 28, US Senator Barack Obama formally accepted his party’s presidential nomination in a speech at the Democratic National Convention in Denver. He spoke in a large football stadium to nearly 80,000 people.

…These are the policies I will pursue. And in the weeks ahead, I look forward to debating them with John McCain.

But what I will not do is suggest that the Senator takes his positions for political purposes. Because one of the things that we have to change in our politics is the idea that people cannot disagree without challenging each other’s character and patriotism.

Lessons from a Spider

Since I moved from London and started living in the Italian countryside, I have encountered a greater variety of strange insects than I even thought existed. I have also become more of an observer.

A spider built a web outside my office window. My policy these days tends to be one of live and let live. So I just let it be. Every so often, when I took a break from working, I would go to the window and there he would be; perfectly still, waiting in exactly the same place. In fact, he was there for many weeks; about three or four at least.

Who wants to live forever?

If your doctor could give you a drug that would let you live a healthy life for twice as long, would you take it?

The good news is that we may be drawing near to that date. Scientists have already extended the life of flies, worms and mice in laboratories. Many now think that using genetic treatments we will soon be able to extend human life to at least 140 years.

This seems like a great idea. Think of how much more time we could spend chasing our dreams, spending time with our loved ones, watch our families grow and have families of their own.

Hello? I’m glad you called

Finally, a cellphone service available to everyone, everywhere – free! No hidden fees, no contracts and no dropped calls, ever. Probably thousands of people have already been using it, but I just discovered it, so I’m going to claim it and also name it: Fake Foning.

The technology has been working well for me at the office, but there are infinite applications. Virtually any public space.

Say you work at a big university with lots of talky faculty members – not to mention talky students – buzzing about. Now, say you ne

WHAT SHALL WE BUILD?

Our children were playing on the sea-shore. They had gathered bright pebbles and beautiful shells, and written their names in the pure, white sand; but at last, tired of their sport, they were about going home, when one of them, as they came to a pile of stones, cried out:

'Oh! Let us build a fort; and we will call that ship away out there, an enemy's vessel, and make believe we are firing great cannon balls into her!'

'Yes, yes! Let us build a fort,' responded Edward, the other lad.

And the two boys—for two were boys and two girls—ran off to the pile of stones, and began removing them to a place near the water.

'Come, Anna and Jane,' said they, 'come and help us.'
