Simon Rattle’s Berliners Bring Mahler and More

Simon Rattle, halfway through his 10-year contract as music
director of the Berlin Philharmonic, has brought that venerated
orchestra to Carnegie Hall for the Berlin in Lights festival. On
Tuesday and Wednesday nights, in the first two of three sold-out
programs, he paired new scores by the Finnish composer Magnus
Lindberg and the British composer Thomas Adès with autumnal works
by Mahler: the Ninth Symphony and “Das Lied von der Erde.” I found
the performances overwhelming; to judge from the prolonged ovations
on both nights the audiences agreed.

Two months after an unspecified medical condition caused him to miss three major appearances at Carnegie Hall, Claudio Abbado returned to conducting this week with a pair of concerts in Bologna.
The revered Italian maestro led the chamber ensemble of Orchestra Mozart, a group of young Italian professional musicians which he co-founded in Bologna in 2005, in works by Pergolesi on November 6 and 7. The concerts launched a three-year project surveying the music of the composer; the 300th anniversary of Pergolesi's birth falls in 2010.
