On Ph.D Education and Research (4)- MIT vs. Harvard
I spent almost my entire adult life (9/1950-2/1955, 2/1958-date) in Cambridge, MA and
received my B.S. and M.S. from MIT, and Ph.D from Harvard and taught at the latter
since 1961. The two schools are separated by less than two miles from each other.
Students from each school can take course from the other school and receive credit for
work done in the other school. In science and technology, the two schools have many
cooperative degree programs and colleagues often work together (NOTE: in the medical
science and technology they have a joint Ph.D and M.D. program and its most illustrious
graduate is David Ho, 何大一, the inventor of AIDS cocktail medicine, and foreign
member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering)

HOW TO DO RESEARCH 3 – PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH
I am most gratified by the response to my two blog articles 'How to Do Research?' and
'More on How to Do Research'. In the space of one week a total of 1500+ persons have
read the articles. In the spirit of practicing what I preach, but at the risk of self-promotion,
let me give you an example on how my recommendation on 'finding a good research
topic' benefited myself. For convenience I repeated the recommendation here:
“GO FIND A REAL WORLD PROBLEM THAT A GROUP OF PEOPLE IS EAGER
TO SOLVE, THAT HAPPENS TO INTEREST YOU FOR WHATEVER REASON,
AND THAT YOU DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT. MAKE A COMMITMENT TO
SOLVE IT BUT NOT A COMMITMENT TO USE TOOLS WITH WHICH YOU
HAPPEN TO BE FAMILIAR' (But you should really read this rule in the context of the
whole article)

How to do research? And Related Issues of Ph.D Education
'Can you tell me how to do research?',
'Please tell me what topics should I pick to do my ph.d.thesis? '
are two questions I periodically receive from young researchers and students in China.
There are two difficulties associated with answering these two questions.
1. The first question is open-ended. To answer it honestly and accurately will require several hours of explanation. In fact, the process could take several years of face-to-face interaction between an advisor and a ph.d student. This is really what a ph.d. education involves. It is not the number of courses taken or the number of papers published. But something about the quality of and taste in research. I'll have more to say about this point below in connection with trying to answer this first question here .
