當我把九歲的兒子帶到美國，送他進那所離公寓不遠的美國小學的時候，我就像是把自己最心愛的東西交給了一個我並不信任的人去保管，終日憂心忡忡。這是一種什麼樣的學校啊！學生可以在課堂上放聲大笑，每天至少讓學生玩二個小時，下午不到三點就放學回家，最讓我大開眼界的是沒有教科書。那個金髮碧眼的美國女教師看見了我兒子帶去的中國小學四年級課本後，溫文爾雅地說：「我可以告訴你，六年級以前，他的數學不用學了！」面對她充滿善意的笑臉，我就像挨了一悶棍。一時間，真懷疑把兒子帶到美國來是不是幹了一生最蠢的一件事。

早上九点半之前把孩子送到学校，如果孩子去得早，孩子可以在游戏场玩一会。学校的早餐是从8:30开始的，只要在九点半之前到，lunch room里总是人声鼎沸，与此同时，游戏场里也是火热得很！、
学校的老师有一部分穿着交通服，在游戏场，以及lunch room ，以及学校外围看着，担当保安工作，他们是轮流当值的。
中午孩子在学校吃饭，由孩子自己带食用钱随吃随买， 1。85美元一份，食物自己随意取用。午饭是芝加哥全城统一的，每月统一制定的食谱摆放在学校的柜台上，由家长自己取阅，午饭都是成品，象批萨、饼干、芝士、沙拉、牛奶、果汁之类，每天上午由专门机构送到学校。听说以前午餐里有可乐，但在今年，芝加哥政府规定要控制学生胖肥，不允许学校食谱中含有可乐这样的高糖份饮料。食谱上还定有Chinese food day， Maxico food day，这样的安排。但那些中国食物已经很不正宗了。

Throughout the school year, your child will be required to complete 40 book reports. Half of the requirement will be project-based. These project-based activities are all high interest projects that will challenge the students to think critically about the books they are reading. The pojects are hands-on and focus on several intelligences. Therefore we feel all of the students will be successful in completing each project. Each quarter your child will be required to complete 1 poject-based book report which is equivalent to reading 5 books. There fore 4 project-based reports are equivalent to 20 book reports. Your child will also be required to read 5 additional books each quarter, thus 20 books for the school year.
For the first book report, students will be required to read a John Newberry Medal Book. This book report is due by Friday, October 27th. We have attached a list to help your chi
