During May 28 to June 18 I took part in the U.S. portion of EJ exchange activities and during July 10th to 29th in the Chinese portion.I had roundtables and lectures and internship both in U.S.and China and learned a lot about EJ which I didn’t had much idea before.

I learned the federal definition of EJ is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin,or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies. One of the leader of EJ organization said actually EJ refers to those cultural norms and values, rules, regulations, behaviors, policies and decisions to support sustainable communities where people can interact with confidence that their environment is safe, nuturing and productive. It is supported by decent paying and safe jobs, quality schools and recreation, which means EJ has its foundation.I have also kno

It’s a farm founded by a man named Will Raap in 1986,when it was a dumping ground which had a significant history as an agricultural resource for Burlington over thousands of years. The reason Mr.Will did that is to restore the Intervale after years’ of wrong doings. The full attention focused on for more than 20 years is “to develop farm and land-based enterprises that generate economic and social opportunity while protecting natural resources. The center managed 350 acres of productive land and supported the growth of farms and grew trees for stream bank restoration and educated young people.

It is a quiet place just as Vermont.I hanged about and took pictures in downtown after work. There were few people in stores in weekdays and the salesmen were enthusiastic with us when we  came in.Several cafes stood by the road and much more people in them than in the stores. It was just as Cindy said Americans like dringking than shopping.

Chandra was very nice and she invited us to her friend’s house and cooked a rich meal for us.She was a good cook and I believed she would be a competent housewife in the future. On that weeken a friend of her invited us to his house for a party .The host ranked almost in the first place in cooking in NC,who was a black professor as well.

In NC most of the persons I met were black people. This is the first time I got to know black people and I can felt they were diligent and hard-working and very friendly to us.

Burlington is the first place after we got to U.S..It is in vermont, northeast of U.S.,with great quality of environment. There were independent amall-size houses everywhere with only two or three floors which have jungles and trees and colorful flowers in the front and back yard.People lived a life of leisure. We strolled along the bay when just doing the marathon.People are very exiting and some were waiting in the terminal cheering and some accompanied athletes running. There were even old guys took part in the marathon. It was amazing.Americans love drinking. Many bars and cafes stood in the street, full of people day and night in weekens. It’s very special that Amecicans were used to do readings and writing in cafe with ordering a cup of tea or coffee.

Chandra picked up me and Debbie to visit a community named Tillery at 9:00. We arrive at nearly 11:00 and took a visit to the museum of Concerned Citizens of Tillery(short CCT). The leader told us CCT empowered the community that builds on their natural, historic and cultural resources to promote economic independence, a healthy and environmentally sound life, the development of heritage and agricultural tourism that honors and celebrates the spirit and fortitude of Tillery and an enhanced quality of life through their own outside participation in conferences, retreats, seminars and other educational activities. CCT has been a catalyst for positive social change not only in the Tillery Community and Halifax County, but across the state, nation and the world.  While the issues that CCT addresses start with what is confronting the Tillery community, the struggles do not stop at the community boundaries of Tillery, in fact CCT members pursue justice and he

Today is the first day for my intership in Souther Environmental Law Center in NC.Chandra picked up me and Debbie to her office at 8:30.The office is neat and clean and the collegue are friendly and helpful. From the introduction we know that SELC was born twenty years ago ,out of a love of the South, its natural treasures, and its strong sense of place and liability. Now SELC is playing a central role in every major environmental issue which affects the local region with a team of unparalleled credentials, expertise, and dedication. There are 40 attorneys in the center and the board and president’s council include CEOs and entrepreneurs, community and philanthropic leaders, planners and architects, former elected officials and highest-level appointed officials, scientists, and senior partners in prestigious law firms and financial

The last week in U.S.portion we spent in DC.There only one free morning and we go to strolled around. It is much more smaller than imagined. But the scenery is everywhere.Flowers of all kinds of color and grass and trees can be seen here and there. Some people enjoined the cool air in the shade and some people took their time resting and drinking in the open-air cafe. Squirrels swagger in the road occasionally. They were not afraid of human at all and got along well with human being instead. Some of them even played with human activily for food.

In Vermont we visited to Shelburne Farms which was created on the shores of Lake Champlain in Shelburne  as a model agricultural estate in 1886 .The family descendants formed an independent nonprofit organization in 1972 with the dream of using the farms’s resource to inspire environmental stewardship.Today it becomes an education center in which education programs are designed to share with learners of all ages, including students and scholars even the whole family the wonders and workings of the natural and agricultural world. We were all shocked by the huge woodlands of nearly 400 acres and I will put photoes here to share with you.
