Two stoneworkers were on site employed in the building of Notre Dame in Paris. Some one was walking by and sees these two laborers working the stones and asks them what they were doing. One answered, "I am earning my daily bread" and the other who was doing the same type of work answered, "I am building a cathedral".
It is a bit more complex. There is a personal level to this and then there is also a public level. It is important to realize that both dimensions are part of your life and you own them. Then on a more public level, you build relationship with colleagues that are not just an issue of advancement of your career or interest but more an atmosphere of mutual support and well-being...
In terms of looking at qualitative methods, I think you can use the film "Dances with wolves” It deals with a number of issues like: observation, documenting...even the major problem of qualitative...the problem of going native...
I find it a very challenging source...somebody trying to understand a phenomenon...going beyond the common perception and doing it scientifically with prejudice...the principal investigator has to find methods of entry and access...learning the language, the symbols, trying to be unobtrusive...what is interesting is that in the end he abandons his journey and goes native and his culture never tries to understand the Indian people in a really scientific way...do you remember the diary floating on the water at the end of the film?
I think that they want to stick to the life patterns of the 80s and in so doing cannot compete on the global markets...they have out priced themselves. Sure, they can change their leaders but then they would be in a great dilemma because the leaders are going to bring about changes in work and union practices...so where is the solution?
France needs an overhaul...they often think that they still have a say in the world as they had say 20 years or 30 years back but the times are a-changing (as someone said)
This is a very good question. China is also trying to understand its role in a global economy. China sees the opportunity in playing a key role in the global markets and its geopolitics. But the change will take some time...because the country is huge...because one can only go so fast where people are concerned...for so long time china was cut off from the rest of the world so now there is a lot of ground to cover...this is, I think the greatest challenge to china, ushering in the required changes without causing a major revolution like the one in Russia.
Depending on the kind of situation where you are presenting a paper
If it is an invited paper, you first acknowledge and thank the people who invited you and then you acknowledge the people in the audience (especially if there are some very important people)
If it is a paper in a conference, normally you start with your materials.
Do not read the paper all the time... sometimes you need to summarize and communicate with your audience.
These official offices always have other agendas. They call on you as long as you fit in their agenda. But you need to understand this. That is why I often tell you that you need to be working on your direction and not be impressed by what these people want and do!
You are talking about some very fundamental issues. Yes, I do agree that humanity has similar characteristics - be it in china, France, UK ... That is why I am constantly in search of the real ultimate language, which goes beyond the sound utterances that we make in different languages. If you remember when you were here...I used to tell you on the basis of my own experience that after you travel you become a person with no land that you can call your own. That is part and parcel of the reverse culture shock process.
Probably it is not wise to say no - outright, but be careful what you accept! Ultimately, the old say goes that "not all that glitters is gold"
You could see that when you were in my office...there is more fire fighting to do. But then the real ultimate agenda is always playing second fiddle. Actually, that is the reason why I take time out in silence to refocus again!
You will need to keep track of your own personal development. How you do that is by finding some chunks of time where you can be quiet with yourself and keep some log of what is happening. Over time, the journey starts too look a little clearer.
My motto is that you go and enjoy what you are doing earnestly and then the examinations would not be a grave problem...
While it is ok to have some anxiety, do not let that get the upper hand because it would then hinder you in your efforts. Do what you can and enjoy it. If you do so, the exams will take care of themselves...
The other thing is that as I grow older I realize the difference between process knowledge and object knowledge. Process knowledge is more important especially as knowledge base keeps unfolding. And today with google and similar engines, you can find any object knowledge relatively very easily.
The key figures are Aristotle and Plato. Then you will go to Aquinas in the middle ages. And there the best commentary is that by Copleston (It is a penguin classic reader - Aquinas). You will see that much of the thought revolves around those figures
Oct. 13,2006
You are highlighting some very fundamental issues - In Europe it is not just the diversity that is important - but the tension created by this diversity. It becomes the driving force of new thought processes and ideas.
But what you were saying is that Europe is like a boiling pot for ideas. These dynamics are not much present in the US even though it is a large continent...they dwell more on the pragmatic dynamics of practice.
The commentaries about the book make it clear that Dan Brown mixes together a number of facts with opinions and assumptions that are not accurate at all. But in the final take, he makes the personal assumptions and opinions look like they have the same basis as the facts that he is quoting.
My approach is similar to reading "a tale of two cities" where the background is historical but then there is room for the author to fantasize and use his imagination and create a Vero-simile scenario where the reader can also exercise her/his curiosity and fascination
Not sad but thankful for the paths crossed.
You sounded a bit disappointed about it... at least that is how it came across. And when the disappointment comes from person whom we revere and love/admire, then we tend to get a bit hurt.
It is important that you take this side of him and see it, not in isolation as if this is the defining act of C, but within the larger picture (the totality of the person)
Incidents like these challenge us to go beyond the single act and rise to a higher level of synthesis. It is when you see the totality of the person that one can a more accurate assessment. Then our friends become human (otherwise we might consider them divine which they are not) and that would be highly disappointing and harmful to them and us
You can say that you are exploring the possibility of continuing the dissertation.
For example, you would like to investigate if the qualities that contribute to credibility are similar in the Chinese context.
So you can say that you are preparing for your doctoral studies and would like to explore these possibilities...therefore you would like to see the operation of how society in the US interacts with the newspapers, how they measure credibility... If you will be teaching the impact/relationship of media and society especially through print journalism

Where I would slightly differ is that lecturers do not throw you in the deep end in something they do not know...it is more that you have to be training in the search process ...how to go about finding your way. Some other lecturers do it differently and in fact, they would immediately assign a topic to their students.
In the department, we have a number of discussions on these issues. Both kinds of methods have their strengths and weaknesses. The guided discover process takes longer to get there but it has more impact on the issue of process and learning. The didactic method is straighter forward but does not have the same kind on impact on the reflexive process. But there are instances where the tutor has a research agenda and they would accept students who will work on some part of their agenda.
I have a personal resistance to that model. I would rather invest the time and energy in helping students appreciate what they can do and what they could grow up to be. Slave labor is demeaning.
In the guided discovery mode, students are more involved in the decision making... if you spend time on it you will soon realize that it follows the craftsmanship model. In craftsmanship model, a person would join the master craftsman and observe the master until s/he becomes a master himself.
Unfortunately, when a group grows, then you also need an institutional structure. Discussions have always been rampant as to how far can the institutional structure follow the values that one is invited to follow even on a personal basis.
The tension between the belief system and the structures is constantly an issue - it was also the question faced by communist parties in both Russia and china where intellectuals question have far did the institutional system practice what they preached.
Institutions start as a way to serve the belief system and often end up promoting themselves. The pass from means-to-an-end to become an end-in-themselves. This is a quality of all institutions (political, religious, etc). That is why you will always have groups/movements that will attempt to get the institution back on track (often by appealing to the original value system that the institution was created to support in the first place).
That has always been MaoXi! Other jackets do not fit here much...so she creates her own jacket。
Yes, I can subscribe to that. Being constructive takes patience and strength. It is easy to curse darkness - but that will not get you far. It is better to try to light a candle and enjoy some light at least in your own heart.
Certain academics are not willing to risk getting anybody in - they want to be sure about the qualities of their prospective students. Certain academics are not willing to risk getting students off the street - they want to invest in people whom they have certain certainly about
That means you also need to pay attention to situations where you perceive that "this is not good learning". It is by fully understanding non-examples that you come to understand the impact of good examples.

Actually, there is an opportunity to talk of credibility in the Asian framework. You have worked with a Western framework - would it hold for the Asian frame of mind?
The more we understand how our minds work - across the different cultural barriers, and then we can really improve our communication。
actually I think English teaching does me good in a way guess my English is even better in a way because when I explain to the students I become clearer about what I am talking about.
As far as the appreciation of you goes - for me it is a decision I have taken long ago. If I take on a student for further studies, that means a commitment to the career of that person.

But that is a complement to you. I also had to face similar issues getting back. You get some friends, but you also get vultures around. And I always hope to have the wisdom to recognise the difference before it is too late。Even in my institution, some people accuse me of being an "empire-builder" which for us is not a good complement.
But often it comes from people who either think in terms of sour-grapes or else because in some ways I have touched upon their plans...

Denmark is a big shame! The sea is stained in red
It's because of the cruelty that the human beings civilized human slaughter alive hundreds of the famous and intelligent Calderon Dolphins.
This happens every year in FeroeIland Denmark. In this slaughter the participants are young teens. Why? A celebration, to show that they are adults and mature.
In this big celebration, nothing is missing for the fun. Everyone is participating in one way or the other, killing or looking at the cruelty "supporting like a spector"
It's necessary to mention that the dolphin calderon, like all the other species of dolphins, is near extinction; and they get near men to play and interact in a way of pure friendship, or driven ashore due to lack of oxygen in the water.
They don't die instantly, they are cut 1.2 or 3 times with thick hooks, out of great pain producing a grim cry like that of a new born child.
No compassion at all as this magnificant creature slowly dies in its own blood.
That's enough!
