Hurting the real economy(2008-10-17 15:08)

From Economist.com

The impact of the financial crisis on some of the most basic industries

IT IS about as far as you can get from the woes of Wall Street: the mucky business of digging ore out of the ground, shipping it across the oceans and turning it into steel, the feedstock of industry. So the recent slump in raw-material prices and the decline in shipping costs indicate just how far-reaching the consequences of the global financial crisis will be for the real economy.

Since the early summer the price of steel has fallen by 20-70% and the key rate for bulk shipping of commodities is down by more than four-fifths. There are even stories of grain cargoes piling up in ports in the Americas. Their buyers’ letters of credit have not been honoured, because of a lack of confidence in the banks that underwrite them. At least one Australian producer has had the same problem with iron ore shipments to C

By All Means, Being Rich(2008-10-09 14:09)

Being rich is really a good thing, especially when you go to the shopping all, looking around all the nice clothes, shoes, bags, but do not even have the courage to try them on. The price labels are just too intimidating. You would think spending some RMB 10000, worth almost your salary of three months, on a LV bag is crazy. But I dare say that if one day when you really got one, you will be ecstatic. In the dreams of poor girls like you and me, a luxury bag or a pair of luxury shoes has always taken up the prime position. At least I do. Some days ago, I saw the movie version of “SEX AND CITY”. Actually, I did not get much moved by the scene when Carrie taking photos in all the fabulous Big Brand wedding dresses, which is said to be the most eyeball-attracting scenario, but I was deeply touched by the look of Louis, Carrie’s assistant, when she got a delicate LV handbag from Carrie as a Christmas gift. Before that, she can only afford to rent the LV. Then, that very night, I had

The Winter is Coming?(2008-06-19 17:54)
Now, for the Iron Ore traders, the golden time they once thrived seems so real but so distant. Downward market pressure, unsold hoarded stocks and excessive port charges, the snapping capital link and lack of flowing capital compounded is driving them to a desperate situation. For them, does the winter already come or is coming?

Anyway, winter is only for the speculative traders and for the major steel mill, never mind, we have nothing to lose. The quarrelling about benchmark price for the ore year 2008 is sill unproductive, speculators in the FFA markets together with the adamant BHP and Rio Tinto has pushed the BCI to a record high, and the Central Bank determined to contain the wild CPI surge again resort to the monetary policy, to raise the already intimidating reserve rate by another 1 percent. What does all that mean? Ok, then that means the crucial points for a steel mill’s profitability or rather survival line: iron ore price, freight rates, and the finan

Record spending on infrastructure will help to sustain rapid growth in emerging economies

THE biggest investment boom in history is under way. Over half of the world's infrastructure investment is now taking place in emerging economies, where sales of excavators have risen more than fivefold since 2000. In total, emerging economies are likely to spend an estimated $1.2 trillion on roads, railways, electricity, telecommunications and other projects this year, equivalent to 6% of their combined GDPs—twice the average infrastructure-investment ratio in developed economies. Largely as a result, total fixed investment in emerging economies could increase by a staggering 16% in real terms this year, according to HSBC, whereas in rich economies it is forecast to be f

Hard to Judge(2008-05-07 11:52)

I really like attending the routine meeting held on each Monday morning. Not like the State-Owned enterprise in which meetings are mostly unnecessary, meaningless and awash with clichés, we report the progress of each performing contract and above all, listen to Mr. Jiang’s analysis on the current market situation and the forecast, and sometimes, he also offered valuable advice to us young employees, even he occasionally criticize us moderately.

We finally made it to sell the YANDI lump which has been stocked in the TIANJING stockpile for almost half a year on D/A basis, which also means we now have no stocks on hand. Good thing is that we avoid the highly possible huge losses considering the current downward market tendency. However, we now also have no new contracts and that situation may well last till the end May. I guess the Mines prefer holding the cargoes just to wait for the result of the pending LTC spat. Mr. Jiang said that w
