A Panic Moment(2009-08-21 10:24)

For work purpose, I called a Chinese musician who plays yangqin and guzheng with a New York-based traditional Chinese band called Music From China. Having emailed and spoke with her briefly before, I knew she speaks Chinese. I told myself I was going to speak Chinese with her this time and had rehearsed in my mind before I dialed the number.

But as soon as the phone went through, I went directly “Hi, this is Jing Li, calling from the National Council for the Traditional Arts and the American Folk Festival.” Blah blah blah.

I couldn’t find the Chinese words for the business I was going to talk about. I couldn’t switch to the Chinese grammar. I almost said “

Haven't talked to Alex for almost three months since last time I saw him at Graduation back in June. He said he would definitely come visit me before leaving the US for home to Colombia. Giving me his big smile and steady eye contact, he was very convincing. So I've never crossed a doubt about seeing him again before we both fly off to different worlds.

Until, he told me today, on the phone, that he couldn't come anymore. He got stuck on a huge mural project he could barely finish before flying home. He sounded disappointed and sad. As he went on talking about how he have tons of stuff to pack, and blah blah blah, I, with some melancholy melody in my head, fell into the memory of how our life path crossed in a third country.

Alex is not the first friend who will quietly disappear in my life, and won't be the last either once I'm on my way home. Doug, Matt, Orchid, Jasmine, Mary, Sarah, Evan, Regina...each a miracle in

Jazz fusion seems to be a popular form for Asian and Western music to interact. This Korean Jazz project really showed how music could bring different traditions together. Every time I listen to it, it thrills me.

音乐厅的装潢非常简单, 米白色的背景, 非常老式的灯光效果, 让人联想到diet coke, hardly live up to the expectation.

Ethos Percussion
