All of these pictures were taken within the last month here in
Kunming. Some are from Tan Hua Temple, some from Black Dragon
Pool.

The exotic

made from stumps/roots are always
interesting.

Almost pure white followed by a flower rainbow...and pure white
again.
So what does an English teacher do
over the winter break? Many flee the country for the enticing
warmer climes of Thailand, but other, more foolishly conscientious
teachers work on projects in preparation for the next round of
classes. Thus, in the last week you could have found me with my
apartment in a mess (see below) as I endeavoured to organize and
expand my topical picture and authentic materials
files.
Perhaps due to my upbringing (since
I'm not sure what else to blame such quirkiness on) I occasionally
(once a year) like to rearrange the furniture. So here's the new

After a three month break, I'm back
in the blogosphere.
The semester ended fairly uneventfully, just in time for Christmas.
I miss my family in America most over the holidays since Christmas
and New Year's seem to represent another year's worth of birthdays,
anniversaries, etc., which I've missed or experience from a (great)
distance. But... there were many life events to celebrate being on
this side of the world this past year.
A few that come to mind include getting to know 62 wonderful
1st-year students at Kunming University, as well as 80+ 3rd-year
students, all from the College of Foreign Languages, but hailing
from all over Yunnan Province as well as a few other provinces
including locations as far-flung as Xinjiang. I truly feel
privileged to be their English teacher.
My first online classes with Biola University are now history. This
was the start of a totally new learning experience for me, which

I
composed the following after returning to Kunming in August, but
forgot to post it in the shuffle of beginning the new
semester.

What's there to say about my summer? Well, it was long enough
for me. Relatively uneventful, relaxing, but not often to the point
of becoming boring.
Before August I spent the time in Pu Er. I managed
to
Not sure what this is, anyone know?
It's quite small, perhaps some kind of caterpillar?
Bringing in the first of the rice
harvest in Jinggu County.
Summer vacation is winding up for
me. Next week this time I hope to be back in the classroom. The
following week all my classes will be under way. I'm looking
forward to meeting several new groups of students, and all of you
former students of mine are welcome to keep in touch as well! My
phone number hasn't changed.
The summer was fairly relaxed for me. It included lots of reading,
some travel and hiking as well as time with friends. I expect this
semester to be extraordinarily busy for me since I'll be teaching
full time plus taking a class in TESOL online.
Unfortunately I didn't take many pictures this summer, but I'll try
and post some that I did take in a few weeks.
