1st New York Chinese Film Festival
September 18-20, 2010

After taking a month off to go to China in July, and coming back to a chaos of last minute desperation requests from work clients, I really had no intention of going to New York. But then I realized that if we survived the week I would really need a little vacation (plus my brother's band asked me to do their web site and a visit to New Jersey was practically a business trip!), so.... Ingrid and I had been exchanging messages about schedules and arrangements anyway, so I OK'd a long weekend with my boss and told her “I'm in!” Obviously both of us had lost so many brain cells in Reno we couldn't remember what we'd gone through in 2008. Or there is something about Al

This summer I am spending three weeks in Wuhan with an English summer camp program at Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Through an American non-profit organization, Teach for Friendship, we are working with university students to help them with conversational English skills.

Wuhan is a large city in central China, home to a large number of colleges, including some of the most prestigious universities in China. The normally hot summer weather has been tempered a bit by record-breaking amounts of rain — and some devastating flooding — throughout the country. Here's what the classroom hallway looked like the first week of classes:

Celebrating the Lunar New Year in San Francisco, the Chinese New Year Street Festival and Parade was held on February 27th. After our morning three-hour (!) taiji/qigong/Daoist yoga/ruler/whatever-Sifu-decides-to-throw-at-us class, Sally and I headed to Chinatown to see the U.S. Wushu group's performance, followed by a celebration luncheon.

Many yummy Shanghai dishes were eaten -- 好吃!Will post our group photo if I get a copy, meanwhile here is the web site for Sifu Bryant Fong's profile:

The weather turned beautiful, and I wandered through the street festival stalls in search of a DVD of the CCTV Spring Festival Gala (easily and cheaply found!), and took a few photos.

Impressionistic view of Hong Kong from Victoria Peak

Several decades of watching Hong Kong movies have left a series of strong impressions of this dynamic city, but this is the first time I have made an actual visit. I met Nickie at the airport when her plane landed, and we arrived at our hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui, admired the view of the side harbor, settled in, and then arranged to meet a friend for dinner. YTSL is someone I “met” on the Mobius film forum, through a shared love of Asian movies, and she proved a delightful guide to a WKW-infused evening.

Heading to Central on the Star Ferry

After taking the Star Ferry ($2HK! still a bargain!) across the harbor, we headed to our meeting plac

The Southwest China city of Kunming is known as the “City of Eternal Spring” because of its mild climate. Located on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau at an altitude of 6200 feet, this capital of Yunnan Province has a population of around 8 million, and is a focal point of Chinese minority culture, with 25 of the countries 55 ethnic minorities represented. Here are some photos and a few notes from my visit in November, 2009.

Kunming at night

For two weeks in November, I was part of a Global Volunteers team in Kunming, working with a group of Chinese primary and secondary school English teachers to help them improve their conversational English skills. Hosted by Kunming University and the city’s municipal government, my teaching partner Ted and I were assigned to Team 2, a group of sixteen primary school teachers from variou

May 2009

I lived in Honolulu in the '70s, when I was a graduate student at UH Manoa. I'd been working in southern Indiana — naturally looking to get out — and I was heading for California, but overshot. I fell in love with the Islands as soon as I got off the plane and breathed in that tropical perfume. The grad school experience: not so terrific except in the 'getting you well-prepared for the nastier vicissitudes of life' kind of way. But... the beach. And the food. And the lack of winter. And the parties. And...

Sunset at Pupakea

It had been a good five years since my last trip, which didn't include O`ahu, so it was definitely time to come back and visit old haunts. I stayed with a friend who lives practically on the beach at Pupakea, rented a car so I could wander at will, lis

Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival
April 19, 2009

It was unseasonably hot this year for the 42nd annual festival parade in San Francisco’s Japantown—a lovely day to be outdoors, so I decided to bring my camera and take some photos.

出去走走 Out for a Walk (Chū Qù Zǒu Zǒu)

我家在舊金山 西部。有很多得不同人,不同語言,非常有意思。出去走走的時候,我拍攝一些地方。你們能看看一些我的地區。

I live on the western edge of San Francisco, known locally as the Richmond, the Avenues, the Fog Belt. Its borders are Golden Gate Park and the Pacific Ocean. My neighborhood is populated with Irish bars, Russian bakeries, Chinese dumpling shops, and a Mexican place that makes the best margaritas in the city.  We have Korean BBQ restaurants that stay open until 2 am, more than one Buddhist temple, several blocks of dueling sushi bars, a Hebrew institute with a treasure horde of klezmer music, and a couple of steadfast independent movie houses (one of which shows the occasional Chinese New Year comedy or HK police thriller). My favorite restaurant, the Pacific Cafe, is off the tourist radar and doesn’t take reservations, but serves compliment
