秋日私语

秋天带着落叶的声音走来了，那么坚定，那么从容！

梧桐树首先感受到秋天的信息，叶子由深绿、浅绿、淡黄、金黄、到浅褐、到深褐。它们不像春天来到时候着装那么整齐，而是各自竞相展示着自己的风采。这时的梧桐树是最美的。阳光斜照过来，五彩斑斓，耀眼夺目。它们抓住一年中最后的机会尽情绽放。

枫树则来得热烈。当枫叶吐露出了色彩，就犹如沿山的巨大篝火，这实际上是为我们的双眼摆出了一场盛宴。这时层峦尽染，比春天的山花开得更有激情，仿佛整座山都要燃烧起来。当阳光照耀在窗前的一棵枫树上时，它会弥补很多它曾经排斥了的光芒。一种柔和的金色光亮充满整个房间。枫树经历了所有森林树种中最完美的转变，叶片变得相当明亮，仿佛闪耀、散发着体内的光芒。在窗前像一盏巨大的灯照亮房间，即使在多云的日子里，它的存在也能驱散抑郁，赶走一切阴霾。

How I became English

I have always been eager to know English, but after I finished the English Boarding School in 1991 I have been remiss in attending to my English and far from the thought it might need improvement. In the course of ten or more years I had only used it for correspondence and reading, now and then, various articles and books, without any premeditated attempt to improve it or make it more fluent. I had also neglected my pronunciation (since boyhood, I had not worked on it consciously.)

Last year a Chinese friend asked me for helpful advices on writing an essay. I, therefore, picked the topic, wrote an essay and described my way of writing it.

1) THE TOPIC:

The19th century American thinker and writer Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote “A man should learn to detect and watch the gleam of light which flashes across his mind from within, more than the lustre of the firmament of bards and sages.” To what degree, you think, are independent thinking and original ideas important in your further study and academic research? You should present your argument with reasons and examples. Write your essay in no less than 300 words.


2) A PLAN FOR WRITING:


1. Pay attention to the extreme individualism contained in Emerson’s thoughts

a. The disrespect for one’s teachers (bards & sages)

b. The self-proclaimed enlightenment

c. The pride with which one judges others
