改革开放之风首先由南方吹来，由此引起的南言北渐成了一个有趣的现象。比如“酷男”、“靓女”都是从南方传到北方，并进入普通话的。“酷男”的“酷”是英文cool的音译，表示时髦、与众不同等意思，“酷男”就是cool guy（guy一词在流行英语中已取代了man），而“靓女”的“靓”本来是粤语方言，意为漂亮，好看，“靓女”就是pretty girl（也有“靓仔”一词，即handsome young man）。

最近流行开来的则有“型男”、“索女”。据说“型男”源自香港。最早香港将英语的style译为“型”，所以“型男”也就是stylish guy，指相貌、身材和气质都有吸引力的男子。

常与“型男”相对的是“索女”。“索”是绳索的意思，“索女”指身材修长，即苗条(slim)，而且有波浪式曲线(with beautiful curves)的女孩子。此外，“型男”和“索女”不仅指外貌姣好，还指穿着时尚、有个性等现代人欣赏的气质。

其实“男”和“女”在汉语中一直是组成许多词的重要词素，如“俊男”(handsome man)、
