In my previous blogs, I mentioned that my wife Heidi and I were expecting our first child. On June 2nd, at 5:33 pm we welcomed Zeke Edward Battier to the Battier family!!!! Zeke weighed 8 lbs 3oz and was 21 inches long. He is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen! This is my wife's and my first child so the entire pregnancy and labor were totally new experiences. I am so proud of Heidi for going through labor; she is certainly a lot tougher than I am! I don't know if I could have done it. I was with her the whole way, coaching her and reminding her to breathe, haha.

We promised each other that we would not find out what sex the baby was going to be. We figured that this is one of nature's great surprises and we wanted the anticipation of not knowing whether or not we were having a boy or a girl.  When Zeke finally popped out, I lost control of my emotions and cried for five minutes. I was just so happy that my child was here and that Zeke was a happy (and big!) boy.

It truly is an amazing process and I never knew that I could love something as much as I love my son (and he's only been here a week!).

Of course we are getting used to a new routine. We don't get as much sleep and we don't g

Hello my friends. It is with a heavy heart that I write this blog. On May 12th, a massive earthquake hit the Eastern Sichuan province. As the injuries and death toll, continues to rise, my thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by this terrible natural disaster. It is times like these that make you realize that the health and safety of loved ones is the single most important thing you can have in your life. I know this event has affected every Chinese resident and I can only hope this event will bring out the generosity and kindness of all people as we continue to work together the help the victims of the earthquake.

I had the chance to talk to Yao a few days after the earthquake, and he was visibly shaken and concerned about his countrymen. It is a shame that China has had this event before what should be the country's biggest celebration in the Olympics. For now, we need to help those in Eastern Sichuan. Hopefully the Olympics can serve as a chance for the world to come together and help to heal a nation that needs healing.

Although I have never been to Sichuan, I hear it is one of the most beautiful places in China. The spirit of Sichuan will rise again and triumph over this disaster. It will regain it's beauty. I look forward to one day visiting this province.

I also look forward to working with Peak to institute fund raisers to help the victims. When I visit China in August we will try to do our part to help.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all those who have been affected by the earthquake.

    Your friend,

    Shane

It was a great season! I know that ended way too early but I am proud of the way that our team fought to the end of the season. The Utah Jazz were a formidable foe and we knew that it would be a very difficult series for us. Going into the series, we had a number of factors that were working against us, Rafer Alston was hurt, both TMac and I were battling nagging injuries and the biggest obstacle, Yao was still missing! After losing game 1 and 2 at home, most people thought that the Jazz would sweep us. We could have very easily thrown in the towel and quit, but we continued to fight and won game 3 in Utah. We had a great opportunity to win game 4, but we just didn't make the plays that we needed to make to win. We played our best game of the series in game 5 and beat Utah by more than 25 points. We felt that we continued to improve every game.

In game 6 in Utah, we just did not play well enough to win the game. After being down by 16 points in the first half, we battled back and nearly tied the game. Unfortunately, we just did not have any fuel left to make another run in the second half and our season ended after losing game 6.

We really had an incredible year when you look at everything we went through. We started the year 6-1. Everyone thought that we were one of the best teams in the NBA. We then proceeded to lose 6 games in a row. People began to dismiss us as a pretender and not a contender. For the first half of the year, we just could not find any consistency and were often labeled the most disappointing team in the NBA by many media outlets. No one believed in us. Our team never gave up.

We then went on a historic 22 game winning streak, the second longest winning streak in NBA history. We did something that Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Oscar Robe

Don't count us out yet! In our playoff series with the Utah Jazz, we finally won a home game after losing the first two at home to bring the series record to 3-2 in favor of the Jazz. This has been a very fiercely fought, high intensity matchup with the Jazz. Aside from game 1, we have played well enough to win, but just haven't been able to make the plays down the stretch to gain an advantage on the Jazz. After winning tonight 95-69, I feel that it was the closest game that we have played that mirrored our 22 game winning streak. We played confident and we played together. Those qualities were always present during our record setting 22 game winning streak.

We must now travel to Utah for game 6 on Friday. If we win, we force a game 7 in Houston on Sunday. If we lose, our season is over. Needless to say, it is a must-win game for the Rockets!!!!

There is good and bad news about playing game 6 in Utah. The bad news is that Utah is 37-5 in Salt Lake City, by far the best team at home this year. The good news?  Well, 2 of the 5 losses have come by us this year. We have a chance to go into Salt Lake City and win, if we play well. It is a very difficult place to win, because the fans are very loud and the Jazz have more confidence when playing there.

I am proud of our team's effort. There is no quit on this team. We will travel to Utah and give it our best try. There will be very few people who will believe that our team has a chance to win in Utah. That is fine by us. We like to play the role of the underdog. Just when people count us out, we play great basketball! Stay tuned and cheer for us loudly!

    Talk to you soon,

    Shane

     不要过早预言我们出局!在输掉了前两个主场后,我们终于赢下了第三个主场,将总分改写为2比3。与爵士的系列赛是完全硬碰硬的恶仗。除了第一

We have finally clinched a playoff spot and we only have 4 games left in our season. It's crazy because the season (as always) seems to fly by. It seems like yesterday that we were in Austin, Texas for the start of training camp. When your team is winning and you enjoy your teammates, the season goes by very fast. I am proud of the fact that this is the fifth season out of my seven years in the NBA that teams that I have played on have made the playoffs. I have been very fortunate. Some players play their entire career and never experience playoff basketball.

My first year in the NBA was definitely the longest. Our team, the Memphis Grizzlies, was horrible and not everyone on the team got along with each other. I appreciate a team like we have today where everyone gets along so well.

We have had so many highs and lows during this season. We started the year 6-1. Optimism was high, and we felt great about ourselves. Many people thought we had the makings of a championship team. We then proceeded to lose 6 games in a row. Those same people who said that we were a great team and should have championship aspirations, were now talking bad about us and doubted our chances of being a good team.

We wallowed through the first half of the season playing .500 basketball. It just didn't seem like we could get anything going. Many media outlets were calling us the most disappointing team in the NBA. Very few people had faith in us anymore. We stood at 24-20.

Little did we know that our 25th win, against the Golden State Warriors at home, would start us on a record breaking run of 22 straight victories. We knew our schedule became considerably easier and that we needed to take advantage of the weaker teams we were playing in order to jump back int

The recent winning streak has ended. After winning 22 straight games, we lost to Boston and New Orleans. It was an emotionally draining run, the media demands alone made every win more difficult. The Los Angeles Lakers had a 33 game winning streak, but if they had to deal with the media pressure and distraction that we had to, I don't think they would have won that many, haha. We can now get back to the business of improving our team and focus on winning games to get to the playoffs.

The Western Conference playoffs are extremely close. It really is a race for the ages. Every team is so close, that if you lose 2 or 3 games in a row, you may drop 4 to 5 spots in the playoffs. It is crazy. With Carl Landry returning to our team, it gives us a huge confidence boost and makes our team much better, especially with Yao missing.

People often ask me what it is like in our locker room. In March, we hold an NCAA college basketball tournament competition. In America, many people try to predict how the college basketball tournament will turn out. It is a great time because every one on the team thinks that they know the most about basketball. Everyone follows the games very closely and there is much debate over who will win and who will lose. Even the guys who didn't go to an American university like Yao and Luis Scola fill out a bracket and ente

Wow. As I write this, I have just arrived home from Atlanta where we have won our 20th game in a row. I am in disbelief. People have asked me how we have done it and I don't really have a good answer for them. 20 straight wins ties the record for the second longest winning streak in NBA history with the 1971 Milwaukee Bucks with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Oscar Robertson. The all-time record for consecutive wins is 33 by the 1972 Los Angeles Lakers. I still can't believe that we are in this company.

What is even more shocking is that we have gone 8-0 without Yao, who is out for the rest of the season with a broken foot. Losing Yao was a huge blow for us but I am proud of the way we have responded. (By the way, for those who believe that we are a better team without Yao, they are insane!!!!!)  Players like Luis Scola, Chuck Hayes, Carl Landry, and Dikembe Mutombo have raised their level of play without our best player playing. I am proud of them. When Yao first was injured, the national media in the United States said that we had little chance to even make the playoffs. This doubt unified our team and inspired us to play at an even higher level.

We may not have the most talented team in the NBA. We probably don't have the fastest or athletic. We may not have the household names that many other teams have. The one thing that we possess as a team is belief. We believe that if we stay together as a group and give maximum effort every single time that we step on the court, then we will have an opportunity to compete and win the game. Nothing great has ever been accomplished in sports (or in the world for that matter), without an unwavering belief in your teammates and the gameplan. We believe. Despite everyone doubting us, we believe. The result is amazing team basketball, where no one is playing for individual glory, but rather collective team glory. That is the true defin

It was a very sad day for the Houston Rockets when Daryl Morey told the team that Yao would miss the rest of the season with a stress fracture in his foot. The announcement came as a shock to everyone. Just the day before, Yao was running up and down the floor in practice. Everybody knew that Yao's foot had been hurting, but to be fair, at this point in the season EVERYBODY has at least one body part that hurts and is sore. Yao, to his credit, tried to continue to play and practice on a bad foot.

The team was in silence when we heard the bad news. At this point, we have won 12 straight games and we battled our way back into playoff contention. We have the best record in the NBA since January 1, in other words, we were playing great! Our team had developed a quiet confidence in our system and each other. We were really playing some beautiful basketball.

First and foremost, everyone felt very bad for Yao

It is certainly much more fun when we are winning. The Rockets have won 11 straight games and 18 out of our last 21 games to crawl back into the playoff race. A lot of people have asked me why we are playing better now. I believe that we have gained a confidence that we did not have earlier in the year. There wasn't any motivational speech or some loud tirade that brought the players together, sometimes everything just clicks as a team and we play better. I am very proud of our team on the road as well. It is very difficult to win on the road in the NBA. Most NBA teams play with more passion and excitement because they have the support of the hometown fans behind them. Regardless of what a team's record might be, it is difficult to win on the road. We have surprised many people by winning 11 straight road games which is a record for the Houston Rockets!

We now have a five game homestand. It is the longest homestand that we have left on our schedule and we must take advantage of it. While we are still in 7th place in our conference, we are only 4 games behind the New Orleans Hornets for the best record in the Western Conference. That is the good news. The bad news is that we are still only 2 games from being out of the playoffs completely. We will need a firm resolve to continue to play the way we have during this winning streak. The message that our team talks about everyday is togetherness. When we play as a team, we are difficult to defeat and when we do not play as a team, we are vulnerable to getting beat by the other team. I have told the team that we must do 3 things in order t o be successful: Stay humble, stay hungry, and stay together.

This is a very exciting time for our team. We hope you follow this stretch run of the season and cheer as loud as you can for us!

    Talk to you soon,

Happy New Year! I know that this is a big day for celebration and family in China. One of my Chinese friends explained that it is similar to a Super Bowl Party. It is a time for families to gather, eat very good food and watch the Spring Festival Evening program on televison. Sounds like a great party to me! I want to wish all of my friends and fans out there a very healthy and prosperous New Year. I hope everyone's dreams come true and that the Olympics are great in Beijing this year.

The Rockets are finally playing much better basketball as of late. We have won 8 games on the road which is very difficult to do. We are a better road team than a home team, which is very strange for an NBA team. After our slow start, we have climbed back into the playoff hunt and are knocking on the door of making the playoffs. The season is so long that you must stay the course and not get too happy when things are going well, but not get too down when you hit a rough patch. We still have much work to do because the teams ahead of us in the standings are very good and will continue to win games.

Hopefully we can take the confidence we gained on the road and apply it to the Toyota Center!

Did you see the Laker trade for my former teammate Pau Gasol? Wow! It makes the Lakers the team to beat in the West as far as I am concerned. While I am happy for Pau because he is my friend, it certainly makes our job much tougher!!!!!

    Happy New Year every one!!!!!!!!!!
