The concept of this project is a city fountain, that invites all people to get into it. The shower fountain has drying and changing functions.  The fountain’s top floor ramp is made of glass. This way the sunshine can go through water and reach the underground ramp, and there also provide hot air to make underground space a little bit hot, so people can lay on the underground ramp to dry their bodies. People can interact with the people who are taking showers above them.  People also can change clothes in the basement rooms.

Women, can't live with them, can't live witout them

Olafur Eliasson

Clients' responses.

This semester, what I have been working on a project about changing room at Chicago beach , because I can’t find a place to change clothes when I went swimming. With a intent to solve a real problem in life, I began to research and learn. From the point of view of someone who takes care and manages the changing facility, I divided this project into four different directions to study

Firstly, I thought of a portable tent which belongs to one person, it’s a kind of object design, but I didn’t build out this part of the project.

The second direction assumes that the project is funded by the government and beach lifeguards manage it. The form of the tent should look innovative and creative and it’s also easy to be packed and unfolded.

I studied this part in two different ways. One way is to study structure and skin; I was interested in practicing the relationship between connection and structure. The tent is based on a hexagon, combined by 55 pieces which were cut by a CNC machine. The difficulty is with the horizontal connections since the CNC machine can’t handle 3 dimensions on both sides, so I used a network frame to avoid the CNC printing difficulty.  The result is not absolutely successful. The two different kinds of connection systems do not look pretty, and the horizontal network connections don’t work very well, while the vertical connections do work well.  However all the horizontal network connections are not a waste, the basement and the roof connections work very well, and that’s an important reason that this structure can stand up.  Its skin should be attached inside the structure, and use a zipper as the tent’s door.

The other way is just to study skin or plane. It depends on the material thickness and hardness. This part of the work is based on origami, and I also use different thickness paper to experiment with person proportion pieces.   One of the difficulties is to find appropriate paper boards, and connect them in the right way. The softest paper boards which school provided are totally free and big enough to fold them directly, but it’s too big to cut by machine so I found there are many errors after cutting and gluing them together.  Then I decide to use CNC to print any pieces individually and connect the valley line inside, and the mountain line outside.  Connecting hard paper worked very well, but I worried about it being too heavy and expensive. So I use the middle thickness paper to find a balance.

The third direction assumes that some businessmen manage it. It will take some money to check in and provide more functions. I began with a list of the activities that could happen in this building, and then I classify them into social activities or private activities in order to divide the space reasonably. Meanwhile I found it interesting to consider whether taking a shower can become a kind of social activity (Normally, we take shower privately).  This raised a series of questions were brought up. Can society accept men and women changing their clothes and taking shower in the same public space? As in a carwash, can people keep moving and finish all the required activities without stopping. I chose circle forms because I found some religious activities around a temple and some celebratory activities occurred around a campfire, people hand in hand a circle dancing and singing.  I haven’t figured out the appropriate location yet. It’s just a concept right now. I should further perfect it in the future.

The forth direction assumes it’s a governmental public art work and it also has a function.  I combined the “big shower” concept with a city fountain. It’s my hope that public art‘s developing direction in the future that it can increase public interaction through function and people’s movement through a space. My work is a public fountain in a downtown plaza, but it’s also a communal shower space.  Water will jet out from the first level’s circular perimeter, meet in the center and fall forming a water roof. The top floor ramp is made of glass. Sunshine can go through water and reach the first floor ramp, but since sunshine can make the underground space a little bit hot, people can lay on the underground ramp to dry their bodies. They can also interact with the people who are taking showers above them.  It’s for city strangers, city workers, homeless, it’s for everybody. It will invite everyone to engage in a civic public art experience.

Actually this semester study has broadened my thinking ways of designing; I have been enlightened by the progress of studying.  Traditional, we consider a designer is a trouble solver, but an artist is a trouble maker.

How, designers gradually realize them can’t really solve the problems. When you solve this problem, the other problems maybe come out such as human’s emotion and environment problems. Then designers started to consider “emotion design”, they consider people’s feeling; they think people may think city is too boring, because everywhere is same, so designer adds some artistic elements to design work, as the result is many new building is tending to sculpture. I think designers prefer to pursuit visual spectacle, however they ignoring the perception of people.

Do you know what make me feel I really come to Chicago?  Before come here, I have searched a lot of images about Chicago through Google; the deepest expression_r about Chicago is that cloud gate. After being here, I go to Millennium Park to take a photo in front of the cloud gate, and then I put that picture into my personal blog to show that I’m in Chicago.  After some time, when I have real involved into Chicago life, I saw that picture again, and then I start to think what’s different between this picture and some pictures I saw in China through internet. With this question, I start to realize the difference is the experience. The experiences related to Cloud Gate is I really go through it, the difference my feeling is different with other visitors’.

Based on this point, I prefer to emphasize the experience people could have in my space. Of course, the visional part of design is still important; I just want to say the experience design is also important.

From the point of view of designing art, I think it’s not enough to move people only through striking visual aspects, especially in a period of visual overload. The future of design should create spatial experiences that engage all the senses.

I just finished this semester, I have witnessed the crazy behaviors of SAIC studios. Many designed program students don't like the atmosphere which is too "artistic" in SAIC. For me, it's fine, since I very want to become an "artist", I'm really inspired by various artistic fields. However, it's just my dream, I need to figure out a balance between the professional career of design and my dream. The 2 years studying career in SAIC is very precious, one side I have to prepare for my designing portfolio, on the other side I also want to built a necessary basis for my dream.
