-The most successful lesson that I did with my classes was an exercise based upon the unit on friendship and personality from the textbook. This was an exercise designed to help the students learn new vocabulary related to personality traits. It also gave me a chance to correct the students' pronunciation when they made any mistakes. Essentially, the activity consisted of asking the students to use adjective words to describe their ideal friend. I gave them a list of vocabulary, most of which was from the textbook with a few additional words. I also made a few lists of synonyms that had similar meanings to words that were used in the textbook. For example, I explained how the words ''relaxed,'' ''down to earth,'' and ''laid back'' all have very similar meanings. Most of the students were not familiar with the latter two terms. The students had a chance to talk with each other within groups about their ideal friends, and then I asked for volunteers to share their ideal friends with the class. I think that this type of lesson is ideal, as it allows the students to practice speaking within groups and also practice using some new vocabulary. For the last ten minutes of class, I played the ''Hangman Game'' with the class while using some of the new and related vocabulary.

-I thought my first lesson worked quite well, where I very briefly introduced myself in very general terms (American, first year in China, etc.).  Then I put up three obscure facts about myself (1. Every Sunday I used to run 15 miles, 2. My best friend in China is taller than me, 3. I have never eaten chicken foot before).  Then I'd notify my students that two of these were true, and one was a lie and they'd have to guess.  They'd only have to raise their hands here, but it worked well because they were amused and maybe felt a little more comfortable with me after this.

Then, I have the students think of three 'facts' about themselves, two are true and one is false.   Originality and trying to make their lie difficult to guess was encouraged. They have to then pick a partner, have the partner try to guess the true facts about them and the false one.  They then write down the two true facts of the other person, and they need to introduce this person by their name, home province, major (where there are different majors in the class), and two true facts about themselves.  The students seemed to enjoy it, everybody spoke and it was a good way to gauge level right away.  This usually took up most of the class and I'd finish with my expectations for the class as it ended.

-My classes have been most successful when I keep in mind that I represent not only my country while I am here teaching, but also that I represent English language learning and instruction. With that in mind I approach my teaching with enthusiasm that hopefully inspires my students to try and use English productively and to study the language earnestly instead of looking at it as an impossible task.

The best class that I had this semester was one that I organized around the idea of a job interview situation. I gave the class about seven common questions that are asked during a job interview situation and went over them with the whole class. I then gave the class a few minutes to prepare their answers to the questions. Once I felt the class was prepared I gave each student an interview partner and had them take turns asking and answering the questions. As a wrap up I gave them some suggestions as to how to answer the questions and what to expect in an interview situation. I feel it was useful information for the students and they seemed to appreciate it. They also did well in the application part of the lesson with interviewing each other by paying attention to the differences between professional and casual English.

-The Fall/Winter 2009 semester proved to be a good learning experience.  As the students warmed up to me I realized their ability and willingness to speak. Next semester I plan to test this ability right at the beginning so that I can cater to the students' needs more appropriately.

The most successful class this semester was the Unit 6 lesson on personal identity.  We treated the lesson as a lesson on how to ask and refuse to answer personal questions. I listed ways to politely ask in one column, and common ways to refuse to answer in another column and then had the students practice in pairs or threes.  The students particularly enjoyed choosing from the options given them and being given the tools to refuse to answer certain questions.  After they got familiar with the phrases by using them, I challenged them by carrying out.

The way I found most effective for using the chalkboard was to divide it into three parts: I used the middle of the chalkboard for Unit 6 lesson material, the left side for listing 连读 phrases and sounds I found the students had difficulty with in previous weeks, and the right side I left open on an as-needed basis for teaching extracurricular native colloquy and culture.  The first part of class is a review using the left side of the board.  I plan my lesson so that I am finished with the lesson before class ends, so that I can take a few minutes to have the class practice interesting phrases I thought of and noted on the right side of the board while teaching the lesson, or to share related conversation culture tips, and this added greatly in keeping the students' interest.

-Regarding Oral English classes for the freshman classes, I found the students to be open, cooperative and interested in increasing their oral English abilities.  At first the students were quiet and timid.  Although willing to speak in class, most were not used to doing so in their classes in middle school and lacked confidence in their speaking skills, particularly in pronunciation.  This improved immensely as the semester progressed. Soon most students were participating actively in group discussions.

Typically I would start class by having the students recite the vocabulary for that lesson. I would ask students to identify which words were new to them.  Sometimes I would begin the lesson with a song or phrase which we later memorized in class to get the students used to speaking English from the beginning of class.  Later in the semester I would begin classes with a tongue twister to help students with their pronunciation skills.

Each lesson was based on a certain topic. Most were chosen from the book, but some were topics the students had expressed a desire to discuss. One example was music genres.  We began the class with a list of music terms. I shared for 10 minutes from a power point discussing the different genres, such as folk, jazz, blues, rap, country, pop and rock music, comparing them to some Chinese music styles. Then students were placed into groups of 3 or 4 to discuss which types of music genres they preferred and why. Students were invited to share their views with the entire class at the end of the lesson.

-My most successful lesson was one I did under the topic "Directions."  My preparation before class was to self-draw four maps on large pieces of thick paper with multicolored markers.  Each map had two things in common: a school and a movie theater.  After that, each map differed greatly, with an individual array of crossing roads, bus lines, subways and trails through public parks.

After a few-minute review on how to correctly give directions and commands in English, I split each class into four groups (ideally of 5 each, but 4 or 6 also work), and organized each group in its own horizontal line across the room, placing one map at the left end of each line.  then I set the game up: Each group was bored on a weekend and wanted to go see a movie together.  But, only one person knew the way from school.  This is Friend 1 in the group, the person who is first in line and next to the map.  They are the only people in the group that can see the map.  I give them 3 minutes to look at the map and try to figure out the best route from the school to the movies (each map had 2+ possible routes), then they had to put the map down and tell Friend 2 how to get to the movies.  The game continues line this down the line, Telephone-style, each time giving the students 90 seconds to relay the directions.  The last person in the group then tries to draw the map again, because I want to go to the movies with them, too, and need every group to give me directions as well.

This is the most fun part of the lesson, Friend 5 in each group telling me how to get to the movies and me acting it out as we go, being as funny as possible.  The lesson was my greatest success, because every student enjoyed it and was actively involved for at least part of the lesson.  Also, every class thought they couldn't do it, but could.  I think it was a good confidence boost for them.  It's also a lesson that can be repeated innumerable times for multiple semesters if need be.  It's adaptable and teaches the students actively.

Terence McDonagh: Shoot him again.
Deshaun 'Midget' Hackett: What for
Terence McDonagh: His soul is still dancing.

I’ll be damned, look what the wind brought in.”(真见鬼,什么风把你吹来了。)

Diamond and Rust

I'll be damned
Here comes your ghost again
But that's not unusual
It's just that the moon is full
And you happened to call
And here I sit
Hand on the telephone
Hearing a voice I'd known
A couple of light years ago
Heading straight for a fall

As I remember your eyes
Were bluer than robin's eggs
My poetry was lousy you said
Where are you calling from?
A booth in the midwest
Ten years ago
I bought you some cufflinks
You brought me something
We both know what memories can bring
They bring diamonds and rust

Well you burst on the scene
Already a legend
The unwashed phenomenon
The original vagabond
You strayed into my arms
And there you stayed
Temporarily lost at sea
The Madonna was yours for free
Yes the girl on the half-shell
Would keep you unharmed

Now I see you standing
With brown leaves falling around
And snow in your hair
Now you're smiling out the window
Of that crummy hotel
Over Washington Square
Our breath comes out white clouds
Mingles and hangs in the air
Speaking strictly for me
We both could have died then and there

Now you're telling me
You're not nostalgic
Then give me another word for it
You who are so good with words
And at keeping things vague
Because I need some of that vagueness now
It's all come back too clearly
Yes I loved you dearly
And if you're offering me diamonds and rust
I've already paid
