The millennium of the West
Dec 23rd 1999
From The Economist print edition
THIS has been the millennium of the West: first Europe, later its offshoots too, above all the giant one in North America. It has exported worldwide its soldiers, missionaries and empire-builders, its religion and its ideas, its arts and its sciences, its goods and its technology, its political and business systems, even its principal currency.
Like it or not (and much of the world often has not), for the moment the West has triumphed.

春节前,有一天不小心登上一个陌生的网站,中间的一行大字是:eat right, be active, have fun.

The wreck and rescue of America's fifth-biggest Wall Street bank
AS PRANKS go, it oozed vitriol. On March 17th, while employees at Bear Stearns were coming to terms with the implosion of their once-venerable investment bank, one of them stuck a $2 note to the revolving doors of the firm's midtown-Manhattan headquarters. That was the amount, per share, that Bear had fetched in a fire sale to JPMorgan Chase a day earlier, when the Federal Reserve was rushing to secure a deal before the markets opened on Monday. A year ago the shares had topped $170.

ONE by one, the obstacles along the runway to what could be one of the most transforming deals in the world's air-transport industry are being cleared. If, within the next few days or weeks, executives at Delta and Northwest succeed in hammering out a common labour contract with their 11,000 pilots, the airlines will declare their intention to merge, subject to regulatory approval.
Were the deal to go ahead, it would almost certainly trigger similar mergers between the rest of the “big six” American network carriers, with United and Continental likely to

It is old fashioned, but I still have some new year resolutions to make.
One of the reasons that I hate myself, is that I often regret what I have done, or what I have wasted, the opportunities, the time.
I hate myself being regretful. I have to stop making myself a big disappointment.
Discipline, and determination. Never bend to pressure…though that means a lot of sacrifice…but I know I can make it.
